  • Helloo, friends, welcome back to my spooky season content. Today, once again, we are talking about vampires, but this time about writing them and all of the choices you need to make before you sink your teeth into that prologue.

Regarding mirrors ... Many vampire scholars (yes, they are a thing) point to this trope originating with Bram Stoker, but in fact there is a much earlier story by Alexandre Dumas, "The Pale Lady", which mentions the vampire in the story not showing a reflection. Plus, there is a vampiric entity from Moldavian folklore, the zemu, which doesn't show a reflection. As for why, keep in mind that mirrors themselves were long considered magical in themselves, and not just because of the silver backing.

Okay, very cool. That is good to know! Thank you!

@@morgan.m.steele Actually, I had posted on this on another site and was corrected. The reference to mirrors was in a translation of the Dumas story, but not in the original French; some are guessing that the translator did this (shame, shame!) to bring the story in line with Dracula.

The explanation of why vampires don't show up in old mirrors is cool; gives them a reason to be weak to silver when I thought it was just sort of an intentional mix-up with werewolf lore.
I was disappointed when the vampires in What We Do in the Shadows (the show) died from being staked, since in the movie it just paralyzed them (presumably until the stake is removed) which I like better. I definitely prefer somewhat more durable vampires.
Garlic is supposed to keep blood-suckers like mosquitos away, so I figure it would just sort of overwhelm a vampire's olfactory sense and make them "taste" the garlic instead of the blood, potentially leading to vomiting if they actually tried feeding. I didn't know it prevented feeding in the Sims; that's rad.
I like the Tzimisce from VtM. They kinda ruined other vampires for me.

I did not know garlic kept mosquitos away! That is good to know! And I agree, I think stakes make a vampire pretty easy to kill, especially on their own. If it's like a *special* stake that's one thing, but just any old piece of wood? Wild.

@@morgan.m.steeleon further research I think eating garlic may be a bogus remedy for mosquitos, but as an enduring myth it's a fun reasoning for why vampires don't like it!

Can we use almost the same vampire system from movies and tv shows? I got inspiration from TVD I really love their vampire. This is so helpful!

I'm so glad this helped! Vampires themselves are public domain and have taken many forms over the years, so pretty much anything about them can be changed to your liking. I would only hesitate when you're taking super specific things, like Vervain or something. It is a real plant, so technically you can, but people would definitely know where it came from hahaha. Other than that, things like enchanted jewelry are so broad that you could definitely have "sunlight rings" similar to the ones in TVD and other things like that.
Best of luck in your writing endeavors!

Hello Morgan! Very good video! Have you seen the movie "John Carpenter Vampires"? I think vampires should be like in that movie. Those vampires are not romantic, they are evil. They are very pale, and have very sharp fangs. They don't sleep in lined coffins, they sleep underground. And something very important: they are not bats, they are corpses.
Furthermore, the vampires in this movie are dirty, they smell bad (they smell like death), and above all they have bad breath (their breath is warm and literally smells like sh*t). And try putting a string of garlic around your neck: they will bite you and s*ck the blood of your neck while eating the garlic and breathing their foul breath in your face.
What is your opinion about these vampires? Thank you!

Woah, that is really neat!! I’ve never seen it before but I’ll have to look into it; those sound like some really interesting vampires for sure 👀 thanks for the recommendation!!
