There's nothing wrong with the design of that cup holder. The two tiny springs inside yours are broken, so it needs to be replaced.
And you don't need to shift into neutral or disengage the clutch to slide into 4Hi. It's called "4-wheel on demand" for a reason.
And that's really not an emergency brake. It's a parking brake.
And you can shift into 4Lo while moving under 5 mph while in first gear, no clutch disengagement necessary.
It's not bronze. Just call it dark brown.
