It’s tough making short videos when there’s so much to teach. Good video.
I do very much appreciate that you keep your language clean. I enjoy your passion for bee keeping
A human pin cushion!! What a comedian! Thanks for another great video!
You bet!
Thanks !!
Had a fire going last night in cold house....then sun was shining this morning and caught a swarm off tree limb about 9:30am.....definitely a wide open season this year will be. Praise God
Excellent content, I always appreciate the field videos the most
Thanks for the comment and the feedback!
What a great time of year to be a beekeeper. Exciting times. Thanks for the video Kamon. Good lessons - even if the weather is bad and you can't do a full inspection you can tilt the boxes up and check for swarm cells.
That type of spilt was standard practice when I started beekeeping 50+ years ago. If you already have good bee stock, let them make their own queen in the split. It slows the split down about 30 days compared to dropping a mated queen in. Great video
Great comment Zeb thanks for hoppin on!
I use hardware cloth in my frame feeders, 1 sheet of 1/4 or 1/8 inch that goes all the way to the bottom and folded on the top of the feeder. They can move through the 1/4 in cloth as it runs all the way to the bottom on the outside of the feeder at the bottom.
I sprinkle some cinnamon on top of the Refletix and ants go away.
Ran out of boxes?? LOL Your bees are keeping you hopping. Thanks Laurel for your camera work.
Thanks Russell maybe I can try some cinnamon on these
I use the cinnamon also for ants.
@@kamonreynolds Kamon the cheap bulk bottled cinnamon does the trick for us. We even put it on top of the hummingbird feeders. Until it rains off. Keeps the ants from running down the mount wires. I'll have to ask Russell what grade he uses.
Russell what cinnamon are you using for the hives again? Sorry, forgot.
@@MinnesotaBeekeeper Just plain cinnamon powder from the store.
Great video Kamon , I really like the Mother Lode products , can't beat buying made in the USA.
💯% Nick is very interested in creating new and better solutions for beekeepers too. My money is going to a company that will invest in our future as an industry and as a economy
Wintergreen oil in a spray bottle will get rid of those ants.
Great video
Your bees looking strong. Hope the better nectar flows get started soon. Enjoyed the video. Take care Kamon and Laurel.
Thanks Geezbeez we are having fun trying to keep up with the bees!
Well done 👍
Please post a video about older /recycled comb from a dead out- what is acceptable to reuse with old stores or dead brood. What needs to be scrapped , what about a little mold ? How bad is too bad to reuse comb
I will but when in doubt reuse unless diseased. The bees will tell you if they can use it or not shortly
I've been using form fitting Playtex dishwashing gloves from walmart for 9 years. The leather gloves were too cumbersome causing me to squish bees causing a stinging frenzy. I can felt the vibration of the bee before I squish them and solved that problem. I have an issue with things crawling on my skin so I have to wear gloves and they do work 100% better than leather gloves. The stinger does go into the glove but doesn't penetrate my finger unless I'm smashing a bee. Since I can't use a smoker I mist myself and my gloves with mint water to keep the angry bees off my veil and gloves. They don't like mint
Same management style. Get to the point of rocking tops, checking for cells, checking space, pull brood. Well, freeze killed our main flow source and everything else that I have foundations everywhere and they quit drawing on me. Might have to feed to build at this point.
Oh no Mike I hate to hear you got a freeze! Thanks for watching and best of Luck!
Thanks for the update. What do you think about just moving the old queen into a nuc split and leave the big colony with a swarm cell or two to make a new queen ready for the flow?
They could choose to do a virgin swarm if the impulse is still there
Blizzard on the 4th ... 88 degrees on the 11th ... 7 of 10 survived the apivar fiasco and brutal winter. 🤩They are just starting to brood🤩🤩 I have been making queens in 3 frame boxes... just like you said frame of eggs, frame of food and frame of brood the past couple years. Seems to work...
Here in Upstate South Carolina, swarm season started about 2 weeks ago. Major honey flow (Tulip Poplar) started about 5 days ago.
In Ashtabula,Oh im still with snow comin an horizontal rains,,I DONT CRACK MY HIVE TILL MAY so i slide HARD CANDY FONDANT made into flat bars in front entrance in case they're outta food,,WORKS GREAT!!! my poor babys LOL
Another great video
Thanks Jeffrey
Hey Kamon, I would love a review on thoze mother load supers. They sure do look nice on camera. I started buying my inner feeders there after one of your videos. It's a great product. Thanks.
I think that may be the first time I have seen y'all in a full suit.
Ha, human pin cushion 😂😂😂! I'll definitely have to use that one
Hi Kamon. Thanks for your videos. Can you do a segment on the Reflectix. 5 W kinda stuff. How do you jar feed with it in place? Does the lack of propolis between the covers and the box make the tops more likely to be blown off?
This is a time when I am hustling from one hive to the next trying to stop the swarming. I continue to make some wrong decisions but I keep trying. I always look forward to your videos. Great camera work “L”. Best of luck on your season.
Hey Dave good to hear from you! Thanks for the kind comment and best of luck this bee season
western NY: cleaning up dead outs today, rotations tomorrow! bout time we had some good weather up here
I use the same exact feeders for my colonies and do toss a stick or two in to help with drowning but overall I don't have issues with it. I love the convenience of them and always having a feeder available if I need to utilize it is just fantastic.
Man...a month ago it rained... honey flow is over. It hasnt rained for almost 3 weeks and i pulled supers.
What is going to bloom for this honey flow right now? My wife and I are in Parrottsville TN
black locust, fringed phacelia, tulip poplar and blackberry to follow
Kamon, may not be feasible on your scale but we have had a lot of success keeping the ants under control with cinnamon. Just cheap bulk cinnamon sprinkle that on the top of inner cover and they will not come back.
Was on tube to see if you'd posted new video and bam, it pops up. Thanks. I'm little south of you and ours has started if weather will allow
Great work Laurel! Not to easy to follow Kamons moves...
Bees finaly flying here. Gonna put patties on since the weather forecast shows only rain... spring is here, just not to my liking at all times.
Lot's of love from Sweden!
I have good success puting a fresh frame of eggs frame of capped brood frame of food 2 empty frames and shake enough bees to pack it out and you should get 7-10 queen cells..
Hi Kamon, thank you for your informative and very helpful videos. Question for you, have you ever tried using the “Demaree” method for swarm control and also boosting honey production….? I have three of my hives set up this way. Thanks again!!!!!!
Thanks for watching and commenting Ronnie! I haven't tried that. I really want to though maybe I can fine time this year
How often do you need to move brood frames with the Demaree method?
David burns has a very simple explain demaree method video
@@markwelsch940 Hi Mark, sorry for the late reply! As far as moving the brood frames, it was just a matter of repositioning them on the hive. I first tried to find the queen "it's always a 50/50 chance I find her". With my first set up I did not find her, so I shook all the bees down into a deep with drawn out comb.
I then placed a queen filter on top of the deep. and then placed the deep with brood and honey stores back on top of the queen filter.
After a day or so I opened up the hive and placed two "2" honey supers on top of the queen, then placed another queen filter on top of the two "2" honey supers and then finally placed all the brood on the very top. In my case, I had two "2" deeps. Since they are so far away from the queen they will most likely start building queen cells and you can use this to your advantage. I waited for 6 or 7 days and reinspected the top deeps and looked for any queen cells and found two. I pulled those frames out and done a queen cell split.
After that inspection, you are done for the most part. They will not swarm because now they have plenty of room and the queen can lay eggs like she was in a fresh hive. You should get quite a bit more honey since you have kept them from swarming. And, you may have created you a small split in the process. Oh, after you do your inspection for queen cells, you can remove that filter on top of your honey super. Maybe this wasn't too confusing for you.
@@ronniemercer7237 Thank you for your detailed answer. Before I read it, I thought after I move all of the eggs, larva and brood up to the top of the hive, keeping the queen in the mostly empty bottom super, after another 21 days, I would need to repeat that process to move all of the brood out of the bottom super into the top super again. Your post tells me I only have to do that once to prevent the queen from swarming.
Kamon, on those double bubble foamies😂 if you have a hole like Ian has on him you don’t get the ants. However I’ve been playing my holes above the feeder so I can crack and feed hives without pulling the foamy back making bees mad at me. This then give access point above the foamy so you don’t trap bees and a place for ants.
Not a bad idea!
im very new in northeastern ohio
@Kamon Reynolds is that the "Super Suit" or "Air Mesh"? -Thanks and have a wonderful Easter.
Hey Mark, this is The Bee Supplys
"Super Suit" it is strong mesh
Have a great Easter also!
@@kamonreynolds Thank you sir: how tall are you and what size suit is that?
@@markridgemr this is a small and I am 5'6" and an 1/8th
Spray mint water on top of the reflectix and there won't be ants there. They hate mint
Your videos are so good! I think you should remind people to give it a thumbs up and subscribe in every video. If you don't say it during the video, you could put it in a graphic in the corner of the video. This could be done at the beginning, middle and or at the end.
Thank you Mark! I kinda feel weird asking folks to subscribe and such but I probably should do that more!
@@kamonreynolds I kind of understand your reluctance. Here's a way to look at it . . . you are creating these videos to help beekeepers with less experience, and some with more experience, learn from you and Laura. Just by posting these videos you are promoting them. To promote them just a little bit more, you can start with Laura, in the edit room, adding the words "Subscribe & Thumbs Up to see more videos like this." somewhere during your videos. If you do that, I suggest you keep track of how many subscribers you have before and after you post a video with those messages in it. But then, I'm a numbers kind of guy who likes to analyze things like that, to see if it is effective, and worth my while.
Thanks to both of you for making great videos!
Hi Kamon, loving all your videos. I'm sorry I'm a late commer to the channel but hey better late then never. I wonder if you could tell me your thoughts on honey bee coverage of a mile and half squared land. If there are three other keepers around me within that space, should I think about moving my bees. We're in a heavy bush, wetlands and small farm area. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you. And I'm keeping watch for your next videos with great interest.
How many other bee hives are around
@@ETsBees well from what I'm told somewhere over 200 colonies and then there are at least another 4 keepers within 3 mile squared.
@@Ziggysbees wow that’s quite a bit, do you have other options to move them to?
so where and what will you do with the bees you pulled from them
Give them a queen cell or.queen and sell them or grow my operation!
Kamon. When you mention “thin syrup” do you mean 1:1 or less sugar than water? Thank you.
If you don't want to add much weight do half a pound of sugar to 1 pound of water.
How many pounds of bees do you like to start of with. 2 or 3 lbs?
3 would be better I think!
All that weight is syrup? U will put excluder on top and add supers? Not worried about bees moving it up into supers?
We will pull most of the nectar/syrup when we drop them to singles. Nectar has been coming in the last week
I appreciate the bee suit. Y husband is Mr. ALLERGIC to Bee stings and on 2 occasions has scared the bejesus out of me. He was in denial for a while seeing Beekeepers on line in tank top muscle shirts and flip flops.
When he gets stung he looks like Harry Potters Aunt that Harry blew up.
Thanks. Good video. A lot of help for new Beekeepers.
Maple fart mite control??? 5:56 with CC turned on. How do you install that? Is it approved by the USDA?
Fortunately this year so far my hive has gotten European foulbrood
Good evening, I have a quick question. Well, maybe two, lol. What is the purpose of the reflectix, and do you use it all year round?
What's the brand of the bee suit?
Didn't the USDA pull the randy Oliver type slow release pads?
I am uncertain, the TH-cam video I saw seemed very inconclusive and I haven't had time to dive in and find it out myself
how often are your black frames pre waxed ?
Hi Kaymon. Would transferring from an 8 to a 10 frame discourage swarming?
Not much if at all!
Hey Kamon ! Your viewpoint on making nuc boxes vs buying jester nuc boxes to sell five frame nucs . I see you use the ez nuc boxes and sell a lot of five frame nucs . The price for everything keeps going up each and every year . I think you can agree that time and labor to build wooden nuc boxes compared to buying the ez nuc boxes to sell five frame nucs. Would it actually be cheaper to buy the ez nuc box than to spend hours and hours to build wooden one , especially if one has to build nearly 100 . To get the price of an ez nuc box down to $17.59 I would have to buy 50 or more . That’s nearly 900.00 . I would have to recoup that cost by raising the price of the five frame nuc . All I can say is wow ! LoL
Yes too high for what they are. You coming thru TN? I bought some in bulk and got a better rate on them!
Might as well build wood plywood ones for 17-18 bucks.
@@kamonreynolds two years ago I bought fifteen to have on hand . They’re easier to handle when stealing capped brood from one hive and carrying three or four frames a few yards over to a weaker hive . I added my time and labor and materials and figured it actually would cost more to build plywood ones . Time is valuable when it’s just one person. Plus I don’t have the wood working equipment and space for it . I knew I should have bought a hundred of the ez nuc boxes . I actually like them once I figured out how to fold them , LoL!
@@christianshannon3943 I plan to have bulk prices at Hive Life 2024!
