    Hello, and thanks for joining us at the Merriam Pianos TH-cam channel for another piano video. Today, we’ll be doing a much requested review of the new Kawai CA79 home digital piano.
    The CA79 is a relatively new addition to the market, as an upgraded version of the highly regarded CA78. This is a high end instrument for serious players.
    If this is the first time to the Merriam Pianos channel, please subscribe, we’d really appreciate the support.
    Piano Sound:
    There’s actually two sound engines inside the CA79, including the SK-EX Rendering engine, also found in the Novus 10, Novus 5 and CA99. This engine is a modeled sound engine built around an 88 note sample of the Shigeru Kawai EX concert grand, and it boasts unlimited polyphony. Beyond this engine, we have Kawai’s Harmonic Imaging XL sound engine, with 256 note polyphony.
    The CA79 and CA99 will inevitably be often compared, and despite the exact same sound engines, they actually differ quite a bit musically. The CA79 took a little bit of tweaking in the Virtual Technician mode to optimize in my opinion, whereas the CA99 played excellent right out of the box. Just a little bit of feedback to consider if you’re comparing these two instruments. Once I’d tweaked some of the settings, the CA79 sounds absolutely excellent.
    In terms of the speakers, the CA79 has 6 speakers in total, including 2 woofers, 2 mids and 2 tweeters across the top. There’s 100 total watts of speaker, so ample power to fill a decently sized space without having to connect to external speakers.
    In addition to the piano patches, there are a ton of other sounds on-board. Navigating them is super cool with the cutting edge touch screen interface - definitely one of the top interfacing currently available in a digital piano. There’s a wide variety of electric piano sounds, strings, organs and various other sounds. The quality of the patches across the board is very high, in fact, I couldn’t find a single one I felt was poorly executed.
    One last thing about the sound; since the CA79 has full Bluetooth Audio, you can essentially use it like a stereo by streaming music from a phone or iPad right through the speakers. This makes playing along with tracks super easy as well.
    Piano Action:
    The CA79 uses Kawai’s brand new Grand Feel III action, which is an upgrade over the Grand Feel II found in the previous generation CA78. The Grand Feel III features a new way of connecting the end of the keystick to the capstan, which is going to translate to greater durability and longevity of the action. This was a smart decision by Kawai considering just how popular the CA series pianos have been in various institutional settings. The action also features a triple sensor, escapement, and a subtle not noticeable texture on the keys, much like the Grand Feel II had as well.
    The thing I love about this action, and about Kawai’s wooden actions in general, is just how robustly built they are. The keystick is exactly the same as the ones they use in their upright pianos, as are the front pins, felt pads and balance rails. These little things go a long way in making the playing experience that much more authentic. Overall, this is arguably, the top piano action curren in its class.
    Features:
    The touchscreen is worth highlighting here again; it looks great and is a big improvement over the previous generation’s touchscreen in terms of easy of use and responsiveness. There’s of course a built in rhythm that also features a variety of rhythms.
    Also worth mentioning again is the Virtual Technician feature, which allows the user control over a ton of variables with regards to the sound, such as the touch curve and damper resonance.
    There’s a built in recorder which is handy, and allows for saving and on-board storage. Another cool feature is the hours and hours of preloaded classical music, as well as a variety of lesson books.
    Conclusions:
    Kawai’s really done a great job here. This is an instrument that will satisfy pianists of all levels, including professionals who need a great digital piano. Get yourself out to a showroom near you to try one!

    Great piano the CA79, if Kawai releases a new sample down the track (Yamaha do Bosendorfer) can it be downloaded from a library and loaded into the piano or would you have to buy the newer piano. Also if I like a sound in the Kawai sound libraries can I download it and put it into the CA79 ? For example I really like a good Tutti All Stops open pipe organ sound, the pipe organ sound existing in the CA79 isn't what I am looking for.

    I compared the 79 and 99 in the same room and I didn't like the boxy sound of the 99. I moved it away from the wall over a foot and still didn't sound right to me.. I thought I was going to love the soundboard as I am coming from a grand but that was not the case. Just feels like sound is coming from the back unlike a grand

    Love your videos and playing Stu, but have to disagree with the user interface. It's a buggy laggy UX mess, with multiple issues that are unlikely to be fixed, given they been in this state for two years. For instance, if you store a sound setting, or recording, you can't delete or modify it without deleting EVERYTHING (don't let your kids at this folks!). Never mind that you can't name using capitals or spaces. As seen in the video when you scroll, you are highly likely to inadvertently change settings. Screen off leaves the backlight on, and when you touch it, it activates whatever setting was hidden (very hesitantly touch the edge to try to avoid this)
    This is just the start, look at the forums for a full run down. I certainly wouldn't describe the UX as fun, but an exercise in frustration! I have the piano and do like it, but please, buyers be aware how bad that touchscreen is!

  • @astarhighabove

    Hi Stu... With the use of wood for the hybrid feel the CA99 uses, does this naturally resonate or can that be highered/lowered with volume. If it also naturally radiates, would it be too loud for condo living? Thanks for your very valued and informative demos.

  • @RickT153
    @RickT153 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    You know he's a salesman when he tells you how great the user-experience is while at the same time (and on screen)
    - Not getting the screen to scroll to the next item
    - Accidentally scrolling twice
    - Accidentally changing settings while scrolling
    - Pushing buttons multiple times because they didn't register
    - Waiting for incredibly long loading times that make it seem as if a button didn't register
    The piano is great but the touchscreen feels like a first-generation blackberry screen from 10 years ago. It's embarrasing to put something like this into a multi-thousand dollar device.

      right??
      I’m not sure if these pianos do this or not, but they all should have an app for your phone connected through Bluetooth that allows you to change every setting on the piano that doesn’t have a physical knob attached to it.

    • @RickT153
      @RickT153 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@pablo-zn1mg The Kawai apparently has such an app. I don't know if it works well or if it has the same problems.
      However, I really don't like the idea of using an app for the piano.
      If I'd buy such an expensive instrument I'd want to play it for many years. I seriously doubt that Kawai will keep supporting the app forever. So in 20 years you'll probably be screwed if you rely on the app.
      It's such a shame because the piano seems really amazing and I'd like to have the GF3 action but the user experience makes me hesitate to buy it :(

    Awesome review! I am thinking about getting a piano from the CA series, once I move to a small apartment in a few months and a loud acoustic is no longer an option. Also considering the Any Time series. Could you do a review of one of those silent pianos? Never played the Kawais AT2 or AT3, but the pianos I tested that used some kind of silent system had a different feel and I wonder if that is the case with the Kawais.

    I bought one of these (not from this dealer, I live on the other side of the country) and I have not regretted it for a second. I tried a few digital pianos before buying, and for the price (at the time at least, about a year ago) nothing else quite compared as a sub for an acoustic piano, both in key feel and definitely in the realism of the sound (may be personal preference). Kawai did an amazing job on this one. I plan on holding onto my CA79 for years to come. I was nervous about the UI, but after owning it, it has never bothered me at all.

    But do have the CA 79 99 a too light touch when performing on grand pianos for advanced classical music levels Diplomas as the trinity college ATCL, LTCL exams, and the light touch can make you fail those exams???

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is up to the specific player to determine. We have many high-level players completing degrees and diplomas while practicing with a CA79 or CA99 and then taking the examinations on an acoustic grand. Many players that live in apartments, condos, or dorms have to use a digital piano due to space and noise restrictions. I personally don't foresee practicing on one of these instruments being responsible for someone failing an exam. Of course, it is not an exact simulation of playing on the "real thing", but it does offer a great digital alternative for those in specific situations.

    • @verymozart
      @verymozart ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MerriamPianosthanks for replying. I have the same issue, for space, neighbours and budget I can't neither get an acoustic, but I suppose there are digital pianos with a heavier touch than the CA 79 99. It's about how much are lighter than the grand pianos at the exams I mentioned. The only people I know who passed the exams have studied on the acoustic pianos. I don't know anyone passing the trinity college ATCL and LTCL who studied on the CA 79 99. I can't buy more expensive than these two. And the Yamaha digital piano with my budget, I can't help, I don't like the sound, colder metallic, fake. But I would need to know if another digital piano with a heavier sound would be the best choice in order not to fail when playing on the acoustic ones. That's why I'm so desperate to find out if the light touch of these can be a problem to pass the exams or not.

I THINK IT WAS AT THIS VIDEO I MADE THE COMMENT. ANYWAY I JUST WANTED YOU TO KNOW THAT MY KAWAI CA79 SEEMS FINE. I DO HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF A PROBLEM WHEN I RECORD INSIDE THE PIANO BUT THAT IS NOT A MAJOR PROBLEM FOR ME AS I HAVE A HAND HELD RECORDER AND USE THAT. I CAN ALSO USE A MEMORY STICK TO RECORD FROM MY PIANO TO THE MEMORY STICK IF I WANT SO THATS OK. BUT IM AN OLD PERSON AND YOU MIGHT THINK A BIT SILLY WHEN I TELL YOU WHAT THE PING SOUND WAS. AND I AM PRETTY SURE IT WAS MY WIND CHIME. I THOUGHT IT WAS COMING FROM MY PIANO. ONCE I REALISED THIS PING SOUND WAS GOING OFF EVEN WHEN THE PIANO WASNT SWITCHED ON I STARTED TO LOOK AROUND AND WHEN I SAW MY WIND CHIME WHICH I ACTUALLY FORGOT WAS HANGING UP NOT FAR FROM MY PIANO I MOVED IT TO ANOTHER ROOM AND SO FAR SO GOOD, NO MORE PING SOUND. SO IM HAPPY ABOUT THAT. WHEN YOU ARE OLD, YOU CAN ALWAYS BLAME MISTAKES YOU MAKE ON OLD AGE. ANYWAY IM QUITE HAPPY WITH MY KAWAI CA79 PIANO. IT DOES HAVE LOVELY SOUND. AND THE TREBLE IS REALLY INCREDIBLE. IM NOT SURE YET HOW TO COMBINE 2 VOICES TOGETHER PROPERLY. I HAVE TO STUDY THE COMPUTER PART OF THE PIANO A LITTLE MORE YET BUT IM MANAGING OK SO FAR.

    I tend to prefer a sound which is good straight out of the box. Few of us are such clever technicians that we really know how to make the sound closer to that of an acoustic piano, if that's even the objective. I know I don't want to spend half my practice time tweaking controls (it's bad enough on my gigs) so I judge a digital or digital hybrid piano on the first two or three patches I find. The unrendered piano patch suddenly sprang to life after hearing the boxed-in rendered one. I find it hard to imagine ever wanting the rendered sound. But I still respect this piano. It's priced a bit higher than what I call the home piano (with cabinet) sweet spot (up to €3K) but is much closer than the CA-99, which is very costly and has little more to offer IMO.
    Having tried the same action on the CA-99 I felt it doesn't deserve the red carpet (spend all your money by adding a soundboard) treatment, but it's a decent action, so maybe here (in the CA-79) we have a well balanced instrument. I would include this on my list of home pianos to recommend, but so far (just going by reviews) I'm more impressed by the Casio GP-310 with its German patches, and which fits snugly into the sweet spot under €3K.

    It's almost perfect. I can hear that it's an ekectronic piano, but it's a good one. I listen a short decay. It should have more sustain before decay. The sound dies sooner than an acoustic one. But its probably is one of best money can buy. The mechanism should be fantastic to play classical music. Since it doesn't have a Steinway sound, I could use a laptop and run Kontakt pianos. ❤

      Hi! Thank you for checking out the video and for taking the time to write in! As a large piano retailer, we are very fortunate to have the opportunity to have a lot of control over the lines and models of pianos that we sell. We're quite picky about which models we carry in fact. From that perspective, when we do decide to carry a specific model, it is because our team have a favourable view of the instrument and what it offers musically. With that said, we certainly do our best to be as objective as possible and we have pointed out both the shortcomings of some models we do carry ourselves and the successes of some models we do not carry. In any case, we sincerely appreciate you taking the time to check out our channel and send your feedback! Thanks again and all the best! :)

      The main difference is the key weightings - as Stu mentioned in the video: the CA79 keys feel lighter and also has better weight grading across the 88 keys (5 gram difference between A0 and C8) - basically the CA79 now feels even more like a grand piano than the CA78 does (the only thing left is to remove the fake/failed attempt at let-off/escapement simulation - which can be done with deft use of a screw driver!). Another major difference is the sponginess of the key-bed has been reduced (improved) in the CA79. Thirdly the CA78 had a problem with the slip tape (Stu also mentioned this in the video) that had a tendency to come loose after a few years - these have been completely redesigned in the CA79 (so hopefully that has solved the problem).

Once you play however, all that really does not matter. Depends what you are going to use it for and which feature is important to you. It plays great. The touch is amazing. • @JoeLinux2000
      @JoeLinux2000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Buy the least expensive. Putting loads of money into electronic instruments is a poor idea as they rapidly become obsolete. I bought a $5,000.00 Yamaha Clavinova in perfect condition on Craig's list for $300.00. The person who sold it to me said there was no market for it. I have a neighbor who has a Yamaha Diskclavier upright. I think they may have paid $10,000.00 for it. I'm not sure. What I do know is the electronics are completely obsolete. It uses 3.5" floppies for storage. Yamaha no longer supports it.
      Also, I believe that the NV10 may have the Grand Action II not the III which is considered much much better than the II. That would be a consideration.

    • @marcusvaldes
      @marcusvaldes 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoeLinux2000 While I generally agree with this advice, I don't see the NV10 being "obsolete" anytime soon. It IS a gamechanger (overused word these days I know). The CA79 is pretty darn nice too though. I've just got a weird opportunity to buy an NV10 way below market price right now.

    • @JoeLinux2000
      @JoeLinux2000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@marcusvaldes I don't know anything about the NV10. I just know how rapidly technology changes. A lot might have to do with how good a pianist you are, and for what purpose you are using the instrument. I know a lady that has a somewhat recent Baldwin Grand, and hate playing the thing. It's a noisy beast with a heavy action. I much prefer playing on my Casio / Pianoteq Pro set up. Sounds great. Comparatively inexpensive, and easy to move.

    • @marcusvaldes
      @marcusvaldes 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoeLinux2000 I guess the point I'm really trying to make in response to yours is that--yes, the monetary VALUE (worth) may drop quickly, but the utility of the NV10 won't (unless it breaks!!) • @brickmissing8295
      @brickmissing8295 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Monetary resale value and the value of the enjoyment you get from playing the instrument are two different things. The NV10 uses a real grand piano action so the touch and feel are unlikely to be surpassed for many years. We’ve entered the age of small incremental improvements in sound engines - so you’re unlikely to see a night-and-day difference in the digital piano sounds 10 years from now. My p50m piano module from 2001 still sounds pretty good to me.
