  • Join George and John as they discuss and debate different philosophical ideas. In this video they will be looking into the Analytic-Synthetic distinction.
    In philosophy debates the terms analytic propositions or synthetic statements often come up but what exactly do they mean. This video explains the two terms with clear examples.

    Could you make a video about Quine's "Two Dogmas of Empiricism"? Would be fitting in regard to the Analytic-Synthetic distinction.

    Wonderful videos. Philosophy Vibe makes complicated, philosophical issues much more accessible when presented in dialogue.

    What is the difference between analytic/a priori and synthetic/a posteriori?

    • @lights473
      @lights473 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question and a common one. Let me see if I can explain it as easy as possible.
      "Analytic/synthetic" refers to the subject and the predicate in a statement. Analytic statements, as explained in the video are tautological. A statement is true by definition of the word. Its predicate defines the subject.
      "A priori/a posteriori" statements are epistemological and refer to experiences. In the case of a priori statements, they are statements that are *knowable prior to* experiences and the truth of the statement is derived rationally.
      While these two concepts might appear similar in practice, they are most certainly distinguishable. This is because not all a priori statements are analytical and Kant showed this. For instance, mathematics and theoretical physics are good examples. Mathematical propositions are what Kant calls synthetic a priori. This is because while the truth of mathematical propositions are knowable prior to experiences, its subject cannot be defined by its predicate and so they are synthesized intuitively. The truth of the equation 1+1=2 is knowable before observational experiences, but it's also not something that you can say 1+1 is 2 by definition. No matter how you try and analyze of how 2 is the sum of 1 and 1, there is nothing in this statement that tells you by definition that 1 and 1 makes 2.

      @@lights473 you wouldn't gain knowledge, or any justified true belief in theoretical physics without experience. Even if the JTB account isn't your account of knowledge, I'm not what's justificatory in the example given.
      For example I think it's the Quark epoch where we can achieve the highest energy currently in particle physics, transitioning from theoretical to experimental physics. This seems that justification is absent up until the a posteriori identification. Though I do think that is an interesting take, I'm not sure it is gaining knowledge like axioms of mathematics can have us produce say algebraic formulas by just expanding the axioms further in the arm chair. There appears to be an asymmetry there from my view.

    I was unsure if i wanted to watch this video explain the concept bc of the animations (so many channels use these or variations and it's distracting for me), but decided to anyway. I'm glad i did because it was conversational. Literally, every question the second character asked or statement said I had the exact response. By the end, i did have a better understanding. By far the best, way I've seen something explained on TH-cam.

    A request to Philosophy Vibe.
    Would you please make a series on basics of logic, like what is a proposition?... What is the difference between propositional knowledge and non-propositional knowledge.
    Also, explain some key words

    Kant proposes "a priori synthetic judgements" in the opening part of his book. How does this fit in the distinction explained above? "A priori" according to Kant does not need any empirical evidence. How are "a priori synthetic judgements" then possible?

    • @franesustic988

      Look up reply from Lights473 above, he explains how "not all a priori statements are analytical". Basically, they use rationalistic evidence as opposed to empirical evidence.
