Have you ever tried to photograph the night sky? Was it successful? If you visit the Pangolin Chobe Hotel in Botswana over a new moon and when the conditions are right we can take you to a favourite Baobab tree nearby to practice. See this video for more details on the hotel. th-cam.com/video/TeJ0wqJakcM/w-d-xo.html
Guts!!! Love you man! We want to see more! Great video! Felt like I was part of the team, so personal. Even sexier with beard! See you the moment we are out of detention.
Absolutely brilliant! Thank you for sharing I will definitely be trying this in two weeks with my new R6 that I’m learning to use on your channel. You guys are awesome thank you
Absolutely enjoyed the entire video! Clear precise information presented in layman terms. One of the best I have seen regarding star photography! Subscribing today!
The best of all… All of your tutorial videos are easy to understand and practical. At the beginning we were looking for safaris tours for the future visit, and by chance saw this channel and watched a lot of tutorials video. We are so impressed by the quality of videos.
Loved this video!!! It was great fun to see the extra Behind the Scenes takes and hear all the laughter! Always appreciate the great information in your clips but this one had that extra personal touch. I love shooting night photography and would very much like to include that in my next Chobe trip with Pangolin. Cheers, Vicki
I'm in communication with your colleague to see what dates might be possible 2021 or 2022. 2020 travel to Africa from USA not realistic.......sadly..........
Nicely done video! Hoping that we can give astro a try this November as it appears the end of the Footsteps stay and beginning of Dinaka coincide with new moon. I've got both a Pluto trigger and a wired Vello so will play with both a bit before to see which works best.
I shot the Milky Way last month in Pso Robles CA I used Photo Pills to find it I used a Pentax K70 with a Rokinon 14mm 2.8 20 second exposure ISO 6500 I end up with a great picture
That was a great video. Full of great photography techniques and we got to see all of you having fun. Funny incident (for me - less for you) of getting stuck in the mud.
Excellent video and thank you. This is tremendously helpful for someone like me who have been wanting to do some astro photography but never had a chance because of my location. Keep up the good work.
What an amazing video! Great job! Congrats to you guys. Now I know how to photograph the stars properly. Laughed out loud with the bloopers. Looking forward to the next video.
An Island in the desert, didn't see that one coming. Great tips and info, love your work. I have alot to learn....looking forward to it. I'll be using western US as my palate until this mess is dealt with properly after November where I live.
Fantastic! Love it thank you for sharing - I was introduced to astro photography and absolutely fell in love with it. My dream is to do it over the African night sky. it is alot of fun!
This was a great video!!! I've always enjoyed astrophotography - def my favourite! Loved the steelwool lightpainting images too!!! Need to come back and shoot some more of that!!
Amazing video! Thank you very much! One question to Charl: does PhotoPills need a connection/network to display the image of Milky Way? I see you don't have service on your phone (but do I see WiFi???) Theoretically the App needs only your GPS position. I used TPE and it would not work without network because it shows terrain. I always needed to prepare locations before my trip :-( but if PhotoPills doesn't need a network and can display the skies then it is a difeferent story!
OMG, Someone once told me years ago that the world is all the same, i now of course know this to be rubbish, your video on Kubu island proves yet again the world is extraordinarily beautiful, how lucky you all are to live in such spectacular location.
Great video covers the very basics and then some! Some Tips I have found are to put some chemical hand warmers on your lens to reduce the lens fogging up over the night , the more megapixels your camera has the more the stars will begin to trial and if your stars look bloated when setting up fccus ( take some test shots) is an example that your focus is slightly still off even if you have set infinity focus! All so make sure your lens is spotlessly clean a dirty lens will cause your stars to bloat big time even if you have perfect focus! I would recommend a stack of 6 images as a minimum and twenty images will bring best results when doing stacking!
Hi guys, had a blast watching your video, very educational and funny, congrats!!! I thought you were using the 500 rule for calculate the exposure time, but your second selection worked great!! Sabine: can you please tell me the model of your benro tripod? Thinking of change mine and Benro is having excellent carbon models. Thanks againg, keep the good work!!!!
@@sabine-pangolinphotohost9232 thanks Sabine, the same model I'm looking forward to buy (Fif28cib2), but in carbon instead aluminum.. Would you recommend yours?? Thanks again you are absolutely my favorite wildlife channel!!
When I do long exposure...64minutes...I set my Long Exposure Noise reduction ON...have to wait another 64 minutes before I can look at my picture...but it is worth it. Just remember to switch it off again for your day shots.
Hi Deon, great tip - if you do have the extra time at hand it can help. If your camera is already preforming well in low light scenarios it might not be necessary! - Janine
Forgive my ignorance and laziness for not researching but is this landscape always more or less this dry and salty looking or is there a flood season when Kubu truly is an island? Excellent video, well filmed, edited, and instructive. Thanks!
Kubu island is in fact surrounded by the salt pans of The Makgadikgadi which do occasionally fill with water. It is an ancient land and truly beautiful.
Fantastic images! Congratulations! But just one remark: Since many years I have taken lots of pics from the nocturnal sky. I agree with most of the camera settings, Janine teached us, but 25 sec or 20 sec exposure time is too much in my opinion. All the stars become a little bit oval. My experience is, to use 15 sec max, better is 12 or 13 sec. The reasons are the rotation of the earth itself (speed depends on lattitude too) and the circulation of the planet around the sun (which is more important here). Hope you agree.
Hi Christoph. I certainly think that the position where you take the shot will have an effect and also the maybe the camera you are using. Certainly, very valid points that you are making.
Yes, Christoph, that is exactly settings I use in Botswana or Zimbabwe: 13sec. In Europe (48 degree North where I live) we can shoot with 20sec but for 19-20 S seems to less for me even when I use 14mm on full frame. With 10mm it will work maybe. On timelapse it will work, too becasue you don't zoom in and in movie we cannot register that small circles are small ovals ;-)
There are snakes in Africa wherever you go but if you stay clear of them they will always want to stay clear of you! This was filmed in winter too when the snakes tend to hide away and are far less active.

I hope so too!
cool ! thanks for share !
I did in February at - 4 C in a so called star park in Germany. I recommend to use a red light torch, better for night view and your eyes.
Nice video as you always make...
A nice entertaining, low key demonstration. I will try it soon but won't have the baobabs.
Please do.........come to Botswana...we have plenty!
That was great thanks for sharing!

No snakes out there? What time of year did you film this?
Getting towards winter.
I just asked the same question about snakes!!
You should use a red light to see when it is so dark. Has less of an affect on your vision.
Great advise, thank you!
Oh, and any snakes out there!!??
There are snakes in Africa wherever you go but if you stay clear of them they will always want to stay clear of you! This was filmed in winter too when the snakes tend to hide away and are far less active.
