If you are new to my channel and Fy Nyth (Welsh for "My Nest") in general, welcome! I'm Ariel. I live off grid (as in no physical connection to public utilities) in a tiny house on wheels in the mountains of western Wyoming. I've been living this lifestyle for over four years now and love it! What will you find if you follow my channel and watch my videos?
Real life here. I try to show the good and the bad. The ups and the downs. What works, and what doesn't. The parts I love (most of it!), and the things that suck. Not just the showroom version of a tiny house, but everyday life in a tiny house. Not just the romantic idea of "homesteading" or off grid life, but the everyday details of this lifestyle. I split my own wood for heat, carry my water by hand, and attempt to grow as much of my own food as I can between the weather and wildlife here. I hope to help others learn from my mistakes and make life just a little easier for anyone else interested in pursuing a similar lifestyle.
I live in a somewhat harsh and cold climate, but enjoy the stunning sceanery and wildlife that I am surrounded by on a daily basis. You'll also see videos of of the nature and wildlife around my home. If you are interested in my photography or purchasing a photo, I'd love if you follow that over at Facebook.com/ArielCelestePhotography or ArielCelestePhotography.zenfolio.com!
For a bit of my background, as a child, I was fortunate enough to be able to spend much of my free time exploring and playing in the woods. Little has changed now that I'm older I suppose. I moved to a place with a bigger woods and still enjoy spending my time outside gardening, hiking, exploring, and photographing the natural world around me. As the eldest of seven children who grew up in a homeschooling family, I had the opportunity, not always appreciated at the time, to learn to do quite a bit of work. I've enjoyed a wide range of jobs, everything from greenhouses and flower arranging to wilderness therapy with teens, to milking cows. Mostly, I enjoy doing the kinds of things that I think provide a real service or value to others. Some of my other hobbies include backpacking, hosting people, cooking, preserving food, anything to do with nutrition, reading, journalling, and sitting around a fire and talking to my close friends.

What did you but under as a barrier under concrete block raised beds before you placed them besides the mesh (is that wire)? RE: salt - wouldn't that migrate/flow across the rock under the surface, possibly to under the vege beds. The wind sounds almost like the beach, ocean waves. Wondering how long the dead ground - stays dead in case the ground is later re-purposed. What is the white material and when/why do you cover the plants?
Hey Ariel the right pronunciation is sir fact ant.. break it down baby. Lol
"my goal is to make everything in my pathway die"😂 ...never mess with the Fy Nyth Lady
Thank You, Been concerned with killing off grass & weeds around my house and shop without endangering the dogs. Learn something every time you post a video. Much appreciated.
I just wouldn't let them touch it till it drys on the plant!
1:43 "you can make flowers out of cookies". Now that's something I would love to see you do Ariel 😉 😄
I caught that, too, and got a chuckle out of it. But knowing Ariel, if anyone could do it, she's the one.
Here is the video th-cam.com/video/9k3yRIg316k/w-d-xo.html
Ha ha! Yeah that was a slip of the tongue. I meant to say, make cookies from the flowers. ;)
Thank you, lol! I've always said if the vinegar isn't burning your mouth, it's not going to kill weeds. People don't seem to realize there are different concentrations that serve different purposes
I always learn useful information when I watch your videos, had no clue there was horticultural vinegar, but now I do. I love how thorough you are, waitning to show us a month after spraying to show the results, thank you for going the extra mile!!! I will be using this method when the time comes for sure. Much love from rain soaked Arkansas♥
Awesome information. To be honest, I didn't know you could get a 20% acid vinegar. Thank you for this video.
Good to know! I didn't know there was a stronger vinegar. Garden beds look good, glad you are having a beautiful day and can work outside. Nothing better! Take care of that pup and hopeyou have a blessed day !
Good job, Ariel---yet again. The Romans used to sow the conquered cities of really hated enemies with salt (like the Cartheginiams) and those cities, basically, are sterilized even to this day. Oh, a few weeds sneak in, as usual, and the dry southern Mediterranean climate further helps keep those pesky Carthage streets clear. But they really knew back then, how to put the 'whack' on anything ever growing back and salt was the tool.
Yep. So not a good choice for any where you want anything else to grow in the future!
Ariel, Just used the links to order the orange oil and a few other things I needed. I really value the information you provide in your videos. Thank-you for taking the time to make and present all the information.
Aww thank you!
Ariel, This is just in time. When I got back my driveway was over run with weeds again. I haven't had a chance to check the garden yet to see what is growing and what is not, but I need to weed around the tubs.
Nice test. I really love Burley. I come here to hear what you are doing and learn, but secretly I think I want to come see Burley. ;-)
I know it's old school, a thin shaving from a Fels Naptha bar per gallon of water, is outstanding as a surfactant.
It's inexpensive and effective.
MTpockets Woodenickle-my grandmother used that all the time. And when we fell in poison ivy.
that was fascinating actually. I just love this kind of video.
Great information! Thank you Ariel 😊
I appreciate that you put it all in one video.
Gotta try it! It apparently works very well. And the garden is looking great! 👍🏻✌🏻
Your lovely spring day is colder than most of my winter days. That is how cold it gets on a cold winters night. I think I am blessed here in Australia. Cheers.
:) I hope you enjoy the heat!
Beautiful well planned planting beds. Good job!
I've missed your channel!always useful info here.its been a busy summer
Ariel, this couldn't have come at a better time. I just discovered a stand of Siberian thistle in one of the big piles of wood chips where I'll be starting my Back to Eden orchard in the Fall, and I have to get rid of it (quickly, before it goes to seed) and refuse to consider synthetic chemical herbicides (it is to be an organic farm, after all). Thanks so much!!! from Sherry at Dragonfly Eden.
If the thistles are really tall already, you may want to cut them off (and even bag the tops if they are anywhere close to flowering as they will try to produce mature seeds) rather than trying to spray a 5 foot tall plant. At least that's what I do when I get a really tall one to prevent more seeds. Just because it takes a lot of spray to cover a mature multiple feet tall plant. :) Then use spray to control any smaller ones as they pop back up. Just a thought, as the horticultural vinegar isn't super cheap. Best wishes!
Thank you for sharing this! I am so pleased to know I can order the vinegar online. I was one of the folks who was sad that grocery store vinegar didn't do the trick. This is excellent information.
That was great information! When you added the soap and explained it I was reminded of a a friend who broke down soaps job to young teens. It makes water wetter!! 😊 Have a wonderful day! Your garden looks wonderful 👍🌷🌷🌷😊
I have used this mixture with salt, works great....garden looking super Ariel.....thumbs up!
Nice! Just a note for other readers, don't add sodium if you want to grow other plants in the area you are spraying. :)
Such a neat looking garden. Going to have to try that.
Wow thank you that is a great combo weed killer spray from now on it will be mine also ,Ariel i learn so many good gardening practices from you BIG HUG keep safe you two.
Thank You for sharing with us your Vinegar based weed killing formula. I have never had so much Chemical related Knowledge of such matters, spoken to me as a method, that is safe and effective. Your dedication to studying these things, has certainly paid off. I can see your Mother & Fathers teachings, as you always thirst for more knowledge, with each episode that you present to us, of your Garden and plant life in General. Thank You: Ariel & Burley
This is the best video! For so many reasons. 1--The time lapse. So good to see the before/after. 2--A TON of information!! 3. The safety info and the organic nature of 'the cure'! I wonder does it also deter critters? By critters I mean insects as well as the gophers/chipmunks that were such a problem in the other garden. Any info on that? And I found 30% vinegar on Amazon. Is that better or overkill? Hi Burley!
Thanks! I would imagine that this strength of vinegar could give a bug an acid burn if you sprayed it directly on to them. Unless the things that have an exoskeleton are not harmed by it, I'm not sure. In any case, as soon as it dries a few minutes later, I don't know that it would have any effect at deterring bugs or anything else. If you get 30%, it might kill bigger weeds faster. But since most things I've used it on die within hours, I'm not sure how much faster you can get. :) Or you could just dilute it more and have to buy less gallons.
Hi Ariel, you nailed it better than Weed killer
formulas and tests I've
seen else where on the internet. The horticultural vinegar was something i was not aware existed. The soap & orange in the formula definitely helps do the trick. Your formula is just what i need to clear a large grassy weedie area
I have. You sure are a handy lady to have around 😋🐶🦋🌺🌈
Give that Burly a nose
rub & hug for me.
Thanks again
Aww thanks!
Thanks Ariel for the tips we do use salt and vinegar in our driveway only.
Didn't know about agricultural vinegar. Have to remember that. Thanks. 👍💖
Me neither, live watch U-Tube videos and learn.
Horticultural
You are full of all kinds of useful information.
Beautiful garden
Boiling water has worked for me on weeds with fine tendril like roots. I just pull most weeds or use a battery run trimmer but they usually grow back. WEEDS are forever. Thank you.
Your garden looks great! Thanks for the very informative vid :)
Gonna try this.. I use your bug deterrent all the time and it works great too!
That's wonderful to hear!
Not a permanent solution which gives you options to rearrange your garden or so future generations can rearrange to fit their needs. 👍💖
You can plant into an area sprayed with vinegar within 24 hours. It's a contact spray, so it affects any leaves it touches, but if you want to plant something new a day later, it won't hurt that at all.
Bare feet on Dirt makes me feel so Good internally and mentally .
Grounding some people call it is very beneficial as a Human .Connecting with Mother Earth .
I try to go barefoot as much as possible! And when I can't be barefoot, try to keep my feet in flat wide footwear that offer as much natural freedom of movement as possible.
Hi again! Good combo Ariel. No weeds yay!
I do use vinegar to kills weeds and I knew that the grocery store vinegar wasn't always strong enough, it did work on more "tender" or young weeds, just not the tougher ones like mares tail, thistle, etc... though. But I didn't know where to get a more acidic vinegar....why I never thought about Amazon if beyond me! I will be getting some of this horticultural vinegar for sure as well as the orange oil to mix up and make a spray to spray with. I hate Round Up and don't like messing with it because I don't think it is safe not to mention the cost of it. Weeds are not stop here at my house, the wind blows those dang seeds like crazy as it is always windy here. I don't mind some weeds in my yard, but don't like them in my flower beds. lol As always Ariel, I learn so much from you and I appreciate you! Hugs, Brenda
Yeah the less strong stuff can sometimes be enough for very young tender weeds. Just be very careful if you are going to use this in a flower bed as it will kill anything it touches! Including the flowers.
@@FyNyth I will Ariel, thank you for all you do.
Super helpful! thank you so much for sharing
Thank you for sharing.this sounds like just what I need.
Such a beautiful beautiful garden 🥰
All delicious...Vinegar is great 100percent!
soap & simple green are surfactants that cuts through a plants 🌱 surface waxes and oils.
Works well.
those raised beds look great.
And if you have a neighborhood cat that insists on using your garden as their personal latrine spray your garden with Simple Green. Cats hate it!
Well that is a good tip. Vinegar. Not poison. It works. One good thing about grass clippings is that it can be added to the garden to add carbon to the soil. So, keeping grass has it's uses too.
True. But there are other green things that add much more nutrition to the soil. :)
Thanks, Ariel. I'm going to get some strong vinegar and try it out. Do you think the acid stays in the soil for long? I'm wondering if we could end up with super acid soil where nothing will want to grow, like you said about salt.
From what I've read it breaks down quite rapidly in the soil. And you can plant new things to sprout within 24 hours. I suppose if you sprayed the same area repeatedly for years you could have a problem, but I can't really imagine a reason to do that.
What will happen if you decide the area is needed for food plants 🌱 will the path area be bad.
After the vinegar dries onto whatever you have sprayed it on, it rapidly breaks down into it's component molecules. You should be able to plant anything you want into the area in a day or two after spraying with vinegar.
Good to know..i was asked by a restaurant to kill weeds near their air intakes and service area..i have a tarp.but i use it sometimes.i thought of some of the things you said were no good..lol.glad your here!..
Cinder block can have poison like fly ash used in the manufacture of them. It can leach out into to soil. Some people use plastic in between the block and soil.
Yep. That's why I used concrete (aggregate, water, cement) blocks, not cinder blocks.
Do you ever fry dandelions? What is going on with the property that you purchased? have you been able to do anymore work there? updates?
Yep! And use them in soups, salads, omelettes, cookies, teas, etc. Still the same plans I discussed here - th-cam.com/video/9WuHfQFjmkk/w-d-xo.html
@@FyNyth Unfortunately, the above link does not open due to "privacy" issues. Did you lock it?
A. You did forget the rubber gloves.
Otherwise , very useful information.
Thank you.
What’s the difference between a weed and a wildflower? A great press agent!
:)
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I've been fighting the weeds and quack grass that flourish between my raised beds and in the holes of my concrete blocks that form the beds for years. They win the battle by mid-summer every year. Maybe not any more. I'm going to try this. I had no idea vinegars came in different strengths. I had tried vinegar, salt, hot water, soapy water, etc before to little avail. Let's hope this does the job.
Best wishes!
Great info!
How's your new place coming?
Still the same plans I discussed here - th-cam.com/video/9WuHfQFjmkk/w-d-xo.html
Definitely going to have to give this a try! I’m curious how you deal with pests..? I am currently fighting a war with caterpillars and snails in my small yard. Do you have to deal with pests like this or do you not have the climate for them?
Mostly live in an area where they freeze all the time. :) For real, in a climate this cold, there are very few bug pest problems. But slugs seem to like to fall into little saucers filled with beer I hear. Caterpillars you might want to know what kind of butterfly they turn into as many are beneficial.
Hi Ariel.
I've figured out your sound issues! The microphone loses the high frequencies when you are behind the camera, but works fine when you are in front of it.
Time for a Lavalier?
All the best from a sunny UK. My thermometer says it's 21 degrees C outside at 2:30 AM!
You're probably right.
Many thanks for a natural effective weed killer. I'm hoping to be able to use this, since I'm no longer able to pull weeds or dig them out. And my husband won't! 🙄
What is the bird calling in the background? 🕊
Not sure. I have a whole lot of birds around! :)
Thank you for this excellent video! Was considering using this type of mix for killing back sod on the edges of roads in our road district, and am confident it will work as I need it to based on your excellently detailed formulation information and application advice. Much appreciated!
Grass is a tough weed to get rid of! Another option you can use, if you are in an area up against something non-flammable like a paved road, is a weed burner which also works quite well to control weeds without chemicals. Best wishes!
I use vinegar, salt, amd blue dish soap for ground clear and last for a long time
I bet! Just a note for other readers, don't add sodium if you want to grow other plants in the area you are spraying. :)
Ariel I’ve got a lawn infested with spiked thistle-like weeds. I don’t mind if I get dead patches after spraying the weeds, but I’d like to eventually reseed with grass after a month or two. Will the horticultural vinegar break down fast enough to allow me to reseed?
After the vinegar dries onto whatever you have sprayed it on, it rapidly breaks down into it's component molecules. You should be able to plant anything you want into the area in a day or two after spraying with vinegar.
Used the regular vinegar from supermarket many times. With salt and without. Definately works but with salt is better........ One thing that I'll add is to use it in direct sunlight. Something about the sun and vinegar reaction that makes it effective.
Just don't use salt if you want other things to grow in that area in the future! Yes, when it's a warm sunny day, the plants are thirsty so they drink up any available moisture quickly, drawing the acid down into their hearts which helps kill the whole plant.
It's not only merely dead, it's really most sincerely dead.
Tis good to do a thorough job even if accidentally.
Good-day girl!
Hence “salt the earth “.
Olá Fy Nyth, que prazer revê-la, linda como sempre. Os canteiros estão muito bem feitos. Os pássaros, o ambiente natural em torno do seu projeto, vivem em perfeita comunhão. Obrigado pelo compartilhamento. Ate breve, desligo.
I'm glad you enjoy it all!
How do you keep the deer away?
great vid!!!
I believe you have your herbicides confused. Glyphosate (RoundUp) is a nonselective herbicide which will kill or damage any plant. 2,4-d is a selective herbicide used for killing broadleafed weeds (dicots) without damaging lawn grass. This is a very important distinction because people could easily destroy their entire lawn by spraying RoundUp/Glyphosate on it as you suggest.
If you reapply it often enough, or maybe it varies with the kind of grass? I have a friend trying to clear crabgrass from their yard by killing everything and then replanting. They've sprayed it three times now and the crabgrass is still growing. Though it certainly does long term damage to everything living in the soil and everything and everyone who feeds off of anything grown in it or drinking the water it washes into. I don't recommend anyone ever use glyphosate on anything at all.
Will did it work gal
i think it would neutralise the vinegar by raising the ph
What would?
There is a book written about all the varied features Vinegar has to offer basic mankind and its really very interesting if your into that sort of thing and I am guessing you are? Cheers Ariel.
I wrote a post about some of it's uses a while ago. It is indeed very useful! fynyth.blogspot.com/2015/08/cleaning-substitutes.html
i think i heard you say "roundup doesn't kill grasses.". roundup kills pretty much every plant that has emerged with the exceptions of some gmos and the weeds that have now become resistant to roundup.
If you reapply it often enough, or maybe it varies with the kind of grass? I have a friend trying to clear crabgrass from their yard by killing everything and then replanting. They've sprayed it three times now and the crabgrass is still growing.
Clear plastic over damp ground left for several days in the sun will kill almost everything.
It works really well in warmer climates, I did that in PA. I've tried it here and it just really doesn't get hot enough to kill anything.
Here is a yummy tip: aged urine was added to the laundry in the 1700s as a cleaning agent: ammonia.
Intersting. Mine all gets used as a fertilizer here.
its easy to tell what temperature weather your having..if its a positive temp its tight top conditions...im praying for hot rocky mountain heat...oppps sorry ;))
Never spray dandelions! They’re also one of the first foods for bees
I only pull them if they are growing right where I need something else to grow. I encourage them to grow through the yard and everywhere else as I eat them in many forms as well at the food for bees and such.
😎👍
👍👍👍😃
This looks to work well. But it sure is not very cost effective. We spray waaaayyyyyy more than a gallon around our place. It would cost us hundreds and hundreds of dollars (possibly could hit 1,000 at times) if I used that. I srayed around our yard and fence and landscaping, I went through 6 gallons. Our driveway would take a lot more than that. We have a very long driveway. Like nearly 1/2 of a mile. But for very small areas, it would be good.
For large and non-flammable areas like gravel drives, I would highly recommend a weed burner like this - amzn.to/2Nk4hQM . Yes, this would certainly get expensive over a large area.
I shall be doing an experiment with this new solution on the bane of my existence. CREEPING CHARLIE!!!! I shall report on the outcome. I thank you!
And maybe you can eat some of it too! "Glechoma hederacea also has a long history of use for food and medicine - with some precautions, as noted above.Food UsesThe Weed Cookbook suggest steeping fresh or dried leaves in hot water for 10 minutes to make a tea. Add honey and a splash of lemon, if desired. It's good for coughs and colds.Edible Wild Food says the leaves are high in vitamin C, and suggests the young leaves be eaten in salad or cooked like spinach. The flavor is fairly strong, sort of citrus/pepper mix, so sample before you commit to larger quantities.Creeping charlie can be used as a rennet substitute in the same way as nettles, but it wouldn't be my first choice because of the distinctive flavor. In beer making, it replaces hops, to clarify the beer and improve storage life.Medicinal UseCreeping charlie has a long history of medicinal use. The Holistic Herbal recommends it for sinus problems, coughs and bronchitis, tinnitus, diarrhea, hemorrhoids and cystitis. Its actions are listed as, “Anti-catarrhal, astringent, expectorant, diuretic, vulnerary and stimulant”. Studies indicate it is also strongly antibacterial.Edible and Medicinal Wild Plants of Minnesota and Wisconsin notes the use of ground ivy for treating the following conditions:TinnitusSciaticaGoutBruisesContusionsInflammationBronchitisColdsCoughsTuberculosisSore throatHemorrhoidsDiarrheaFlatulenceDigestive troublesGastritisCatarrhal EnteritisCystitisVenereal DiseaseGallstonesJaundiceNervous HeadachesRetained PlacetaTumorsLead Poisoning"

Good GRIEF! I just finished 5 days of taking azithromycin for a sinus infection, bronchitis, ear infection, and now I also have a sore throat. I might be a small woman but when I do things it's in a big way. And all the time I had something out in the yard that could help? It's trying to eat the village! Before I condemn it to vinegar I'll try making a tea of it. I shall report on the outcome. I thank you!
Go for it! I realize you may still have lots growing in areas where you don't want it, but you might want to keep a little. Tell me how it goes!
If it helps, it's usually pronounced Surf-ack-tant :)
wow . i wonder how one can make concentrated vinegar . boiling ? evaporating ? lost of times salts work but can draw animals that are sodium deficient i hear . I know they are attracted to our western salt laden Pee ! so much for marking our territory 😜
Maybe letting it ferment longer? I don't know if there's a limit to how strong the acid will get from that. You might have to evaporate or distill some water out? Yeah I've seen wildlife come directly to human urine and eat all the dirt around it for it's salt. I know some folks say it deters wildlife and I wish them the best with that. Doesn't work here. :)
Sur fact ant.:)
Surf Act Ant. :) Emphasis on the Act.
Why you say everything is deluded?
Hmm? You may be thinking of the word diluted. "verb (used with object), di·lut·ed, di·lut·ing.
to make (a liquid) thinner or weaker by the addition of water or the like.
to make fainter, as a color.
to reduce the strength, force, or efficiency of by admixture."
surf -act- ant. Makes water wetter. ; )
wat a woman
Really there are only a couple of decent weed killers, by far Roundup and it's copies is the best and not toxic to humans if used with respect. As it will not kill everything, you also need some kind of 'hormone' quick knock down stuff. All of these hippie recipes are just a waste of time. Do it right and do it once, perhaps twice a year.
Well as you can see this "hippie recipe" did indeed work if you watch the video. I'd also encourage anyone who things glyphosate is not harmful to humans to do their own research about things like the soil microbes it kills, all the beneficial bacteria (that does things like regulate your brain chemistry among many others) in your gut that it kills, the super high cancer rates that are skyrocketing along the whole delta that drains the commercial "bread basket" area of the States and much more.
