In winter I cover the netting with a clear tarp called Weathershield to keep out the cold, wind and excessive rain. All veggies are grown in raised beds.
Why don't you strap a turbine on a truck and use it as a giant vacuum as you drive through the swam, then you just mulch them all up and spit them out the back. Or use a more controlled version of that and turn them into fertilizer, for the same fields they're destroying.
@@Pssst.ByTheWay just follow the swarm around. You obviously don't have to get them all, but they're so dense you could get a significant amount of them.
It seems like there would be some way to kill large numbers with a brief burst of electricity or flame. If they were just singed enough to become immobile, they could be collected at times for fertilizer or food for animals and people. Good luck to the people suffering from these locusts.
I believe that a water soluble adhesive sprayed on the ground will stop them from moving and if sprayed in the air while they swarm their wings will stick together and they cant fly, then when it rains it goes away
Wouldn't big "hoovers" help to "collect" (suck) the locusts? Just imagine these gadgets would get their electricity via solar cells? I am not an expert concerning ecology, but if these locusts were then "collected" couldn't they be used for some kind of "Proteinriegel" (German term) that locals can produce and sell? It would be just very loud to use this imaginary big hoover having tentacles flying trough the air to suck the locusts. But wouldn't it be an ecological way to get "rid" of the mass of locusts and to help farmers not only for their future but also as temporary business to get back their income? If locusts are eatable people can reduce at least some lack of food?
Most of the people in this countrys can't even afford modern agricultural machinery, so vetical farming is far far away from their reallity. Thats somthing for rich countrys or citys.
Putting up enormous nets might help stop such a swarm traveling on. But all aspects of it must be designed..: it must have some system to connect the edge of one roll of netting to a next roll and that connects them tight enough for these critters to not be able to pass inbetween. Mere tie ribs won't do, can't be re-used but are one-way instead and are a polluting form of waste on their own - so we must for instance come up with some type of small click-thingy we can design that can be mounted and loosened again with a twist of the wrist - or, hand. Or a variant on the zipper might be an idea; we could even choose small rings on both sides if we can make them line up easily enough and if it is possible to slide a wire through them for connecting both sides of two rolls. Also the nets must be in as wide a roll as is handy, possibly with local transport also mattering at mwx 2½ - 3 meters wide, and we must come up with a system that allows mounting them real high, cause to stop a swarm weer might have to go with heights of 12,15,maybe even 20 meters. Maybe we can come up with aluminium strips, that can be stacked on top of each other, clicking the different lengths into each other like tent poles... maybe we can even make it so that the netting can slide into a groove on either side, and we can put up such an aluminum long 'stick' to keep those nets up every 4, 5, 6 roles of netting? We might also keep the aluminum vertical mounts UP with wires we run from the top on either side to the ground diagonally, as we know it from tents!) It must be industrially made, preferably from NON-polluting materials, and must be state-subsidised as way to finance them. It will take organised and massive efforts that asks for help from everybody to get them in place and mount all them. And then when a swarm might hit and get stuck behind such a long line of netting, shall we use fishing nets to scoop them up? We can't just put a flame thrower onto them, cause that would burn our nets away. If we want to use flame throwers, we would need metal 'NETTING'. There's a lot to think about and work out, and it 'should have been done by yesterday'! But I am convinced that of we truly want it, we are ingenious and powerful enough as humans of good spirits and will to find a way.. find a solution.. and get it done ! ! ! I have also thought of role of netting that are up to 20 meters wide all in one piece. In that case they would have to come folded. The pro would be that we can mount them between posts that are further away from one another, and 'bridge' bigger distances. In that design there would be a rope at the max height that the net hangs from and helps strengthen the net. If we could get away with placing a 'pole' every 20,but maybe even 40, 50 or 60 meters or so, these poles would have to be significantly stronger than in the lighter design idea presented above. In that case, it would be best to have the whole mounted a specialised crew with specialised equipment, such as a 'cherry picker' / scaffold truck / truck with an elevator platform or hoist (hard to find the right word for a layman)..!
When you mess with the perfectly calculated balance of nature then you should expect undesirable results. What happened to the birds which would make feasts of grasshopper eggs?
"Locusts, like many insects, are an excellent source of protein. According to the Encyclopedia of Science, they contain 62% protein, 17% fats and elements such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, manganese, sodium, iron and phosphorus." I wonder if they can be eaten. I'm from Oaxaca, Mexico and we eat grasshoppers. We season them with garlic and lime and then toast them. They are very expensive too.
thinking chickens and ducks strategically and nets fired over swarms holding them down to spray. Cheap hoop houses to use to grow some crops besides poultry. seems this is gone to far to eradicate but must be a way to do something...
Have 20 rigs 18 wheelers lined up no motors except for the first , with a 10 foot diameter PVC PLASTIC going through all of them , and on the last rig a 5 layer chicken wire screen to prevent locust from hitting fan blades , have a flatbed truck with 3 circular fans 10 feet in diameter , inside the last 20 feet of PVC pipe
Use NETS....................50-100 foot tall....fine mesh strong tensile.........and catchers on the bottom........not so difficult with the right amount of funds. These could be walled for prevention.....a 2nd measure is domed nets for the farmers.

Why don't you strap a turbine on a truck and use it as a giant vacuum as you drive through the swam, then you just mulch them all up and spit them out the back. Or use a more controlled version of that and turn them into fertilizer, for the same fields they're destroying.
Sounds like a fun GoFundMe project or such equivalent...
too spread out, too many
@@Pssst.ByTheWay just follow the swarm around. You obviously don't have to get them all, but they're so dense you could get a significant amount of them.

We have angered the Gods. The reckoning is near.
Damn. 2020 has been a horrible year. Plagues, locusts, economic downturn...
Mother Earth Strikes Back.
Mother Earth is an abusive parent.
It seems like there would be some way to kill large numbers with a brief burst of electricity or flame. If they were just singed enough to become immobile, they could be collected at times for fertilizer or food for animals and people. Good luck to the people suffering from these locusts.
Beginning of the end.....
They forgot to report the part where a guy in robes can be seen behind the locust swarm shouting, "let my peope go!!!".
Nice joke
?
Can the swarms be sprayed while in the air in a swarm before they get to crops?
Bonita Wauls No, there are millions of them everywhere.
Vertical farming controlled in greenhouses is the solution.
@cherry_mx_1989 not to mention, who's gonna pay?
Greenhouses you say? Really?
Only a hand full amount of crops can be grown using vertical farming
That requires a lot of investment 20x higher than current,
Most of the people in this countrys can't even afford modern agricultural machinery, so vetical farming is far far away from their reallity.
Thats somthing for rich countrys or citys.
Duh it is 2020
Lol you're cute

Why does that man's face look as if it's photoshopped on his body?
In that case, it would be best to have the whole mounted a specialised crew with specialised equipment, such as a 'cherry picker' / scaffold truck / truck with an elevator platform or hoist (hard to find the right word for a layman)..!
if i remember correctly the next plague is darkness for three days then comes the death of the firstborn son ?
Not holding my breath.
Locust? I heard it's high protein, isn't it?
yup. tis good stuff. looks unfamiliar but good, easily dried hence 3rd world without fridges. good chow
In certain parts of Africa, locusts are sold in the market place, it's food for them

Have 20 rigs 18 wheelers lined up no motors except for the first , with a 10 foot diameter PVC PLASTIC going through all of them , and on the last rig a 5 layer chicken wire screen to prevent locust from hitting fan blades , have a flatbed truck with 3 circular fans 10 feet in diameter , inside the last 20 feet of PVC pipe

locusts are food, so collect them, sell them and eat them.
Buckle like pigs and they caused the swine flu.
one of the worse famine struck areas of the world and they cry when God sends them a feast ..
Use NETS....................50-100 foot tall....fine mesh strong tensile.........and catchers on the bottom........not so difficult with the right amount of funds. These could be walled for prevention.....a 2nd measure is domed nets for the farmers.
You know.. locusts are edible..
Locusts respond to frequencies. These can be artificially created with other conditions..

Sounds like a great export opportunity. The western world is having a food crisis as well. No?
The worst crisis about western "food" is that it's genetically-modified.
no. Are you joking? You are looking at people who are in danger of starving to death and you're comparing your plight of more expensive hamburger with theirs? There is so much food in the West, they send 1/3 to landfills because it's not pretty enough. Food crisis. Yeah!
In Somaliland we are witnessing swarm after swarm. Some are smaller, I think they are the ones that broke away from the original swarms, for reasons I do not know, maybe wind. They follow one another in less than an hour in consecutive days. God these things are trillions and trillions, you cannot comprehend until you witness them. They have a particular timing, around the afternoons is when they appear. From around 1pm to 5pm.
Wow, that’s crazy. Do locusts bite people and how quickly do they destroy the crops?

Some peoples eat them as they are full of protein etc. Net them and turn them into flour. This is being trialed in NZ as an alternative food source.
I understand that they are edible and nutritious; perhaps they should be freeze drying them and shrink wrapping ??
China uses duck and chicken and it does work
That's a protein source. You can do fry them and coat them in honey , mustard and BBQ sauce. You can even dip them in chocolate Grind them up and dry them out to make protein powder. They can also be used in chicken feed. Locusts. The new meat.
