Born in England. Raised in Australia from age 9. Travelled the world. I am 56. I remember the South American trial of the Range Rover. I had a Dinky toy Range Rover and pretended it was journeying through the Amazon rainforest.
Although expensive to own and liable for expensive repair I have always loved Range Rovers. Having a Range Rover in the Louvre as a work of art compounds my taste as being common.
As such , due to romantic nostalgia, I am so pleased that you have returned to the marque.
There was an excellent USA comparison of off-roaders that showed the G wagon as being the best off the shelf off roarer and a long wheel base Range Rover as being the second best.
Meanwhile 2022 Land Rover Defender is here with roo bar, snorkel, winch as factory fitted options. Like you I await the coil springs. It will be interesting to compare with the Grenadier.

Some things capture our attention and we find ourselves engrossed in them. With cars, it's a unique and entirely subjective dynamic. There are models and brands of automobiles that touch us across time and we just can't help but pursue them, because of the way they make us feel. The ether is a real phenomenon.
I don't care for Range Rovers, but Andrew... I'm glad you do, and I'm glad to experience your story.

3 years ago I pulled a 1979 fj45 landcruiser out of a shed. One owner, 104,000km genuine. Sat 1999-2018. I did- master cylinders, slave/wheel cylinders, removed fuel tank and chemically cleaned, new fuel lines. New fan belts and radiator/heater hoses. Oil change and filters. New battery and away it went. Its still running on original point and coil. New plugs and leads. Hasnt had a tune. Runs like a dream. However “stuff happens” eg return spring on clutch was fatigued and fell off. Throttle cable decided to stick. Old stuff is old stuff. I love it and wish i could upload a photo (and one of the rangie), old girls done 110,000km. Had plans for an outback trip, no thanks. I will take the LC79 :). Love your work👍

I guess you’re going to spend a couple of days checking it over? Just change all the oils, keep an eye on the temperature gauge etc. in fact...book it in for a roadworthy test; for eighty six bucks that will identify any safety issues. Drive around for a couple of hundred kms and if all feels ok, then drive it home! It’s all on road and straightforward, and to be honest you could make too big a deal of worrying about it.

Hi Andrew. I’m also from Perth and own a slightly younger at, 42 years, two door RR in the same Sahara Dust colour.
Over twenty years ago it went to Brisbane and back. On return the gearbox whine was louder and inspection demonstrated the rear lay shaft bearing was loose in the casing. Fixed by replacing and staking.
You appear to have found the last totally original two door in Australia. Well done and good luck with the restoration.
When I purchased mine new in Perth I couldn’t believe how underpowered it was for a 3.528L V8.
Fitment of a Holley carburettor, Crane cam and headers give it the performance to mix it with modern traffic with minimal loss of low down torque, but loss of originality.
I can recommend Tickel’s in Wangara for any service or repairs.

I set out on my Series 3 ownership with exactly the same sort of vision and approach. The surprise for me is that reliability is underestimated i.e. have much more confidence. The part supply of useful useable parts is the opposite. Aquiring the right bit that works properly and where to get it is much harder than it appears. Parts are an adventure in themselves and still rewarding once you crack it but also frustrating along the way.
Enjoy the process!👍 Looking forward to see how it goes.

Paul Marsh totally reminds me of another Paul I knew many years ago: Warrant Officer Maurice (Mo) Paul, R.C.E.M.E. (Not the name of the Corps at the time, but we maintained the name through the years.) Back when I was taking Vehicle Technician Trade Qualification Level 2 in the 1980s. Very, very, very knowledgeable about all vehicle systems, could talk about them easily, and get into the finer points of how the things work, sharing the interest and passion in the workings of the machine. A great guy in the classroom and probably a great guy to have many, many beer with in the mess.

Get Les Richmond Automotive at Thomastown ( independent LR specialists) to check it over. My sons Defender is being serviced there as I write. I have had work done there too. My first LR was a County 110 V8. It was basically that RR underneath. Good luck!

This will be a fantastic project and trip. I drove an 1981 2 door for 3 years in Saudi Arabia whilst working as a defence contractor - on my days off travelling deep into remote areas of the deserts there - across 100s of kilometres of terrible corrugations, deep wadis, endless sand dunes - never had a problem with this vehicle and I thrashed it relentlessly during that time. The Pirelli tyres delaminated at the 2 year mark due to the heat and punishment. It had no special servicing or preparation - just standard servicing and attention to details. I did however spend time making the tailgate dustproof and had a special heavy duty radiator built for it at the radiator souk in Riyadh. It had a very good air conditioner and the suspension was standard - supple and smooth like a magic carpet ride - which allowed for fast extremely comfortable travel - the suspension is its forte as you know. The only major oil leak was from the gearbox primary shaft seal which allowed oil to contaminate the clutch plate - never slipped however - there was a groove worn on the shaft due to its high mileage and the ubiquitous fine dust in that country- fixed it by using 2 thinner seals back to back to straddle this groove.
As you stated in the video, you already know how to refurbish the essentials items - based on my experience with these simple old vehicles you will have a trouble free journey and fantastic adventure. When refurbishing various parts on this vehicle such as brake booster, clutch master and slave and anywhere rubber is used, you must carefully find a specialist that knows how to avoid the rubbish copy parts that are out there.

    List of things to check,
    - condition of the rotor, distributor points,
    - lubrication of the carburetor pistons,
    - color fluid of clutch pump fluid, hoses
    - color fluid pump brake
    - the transmission lt95 is the least I would worry about if it has oil, the only thing to pay attention is the internal seal that divides the transfer oil
    - lubrication CV and differential joints,
    - radiator that is clean,
    - I would remove the thermostat only for that journey
    - check regulator voltaje radiator
    - check radiator oil
    - It would have a gap in case the rear heating hose breaks

You glide to a stop in your new shiny toy, whistling prisoner of the hill, then have to wind the window down to get to the outside handle to get out. Used to keep a couple of spares in the car. Paul's got it exactly right.
If there's nothing already wrong with the RRC, it should easily manage 3000km without a fault developing and then becoming a show-stopper.
Problems will occur if things like wheel bearings, driveshafts or UJs are already worn and then fail completely during the trip.
Long as none of those things are worn before you start, they're not going to develop faults over a couple of thousand miles.

I bought a 76 F100 and the noises from the engine were horrific but I did 2 engine flushes added Morey's and a good quality heavy oil and drove it for years. Engine sounded good so hydraulic tappets sound great as you said but please ask about the water pump as Paul states water/cooling issues with V8,s kill them almost immediately. did they pack the oil filter with grease to give immediate oil pressure, I always fitted a high pressure pump .
Great looking Classic, had one in the 1990,s wish I still had on too, Regards Phil

Over thinking it. check it over , take it for a good spin , look for leaks, and noises and what not, then point it west and drive. Bring something so you can sleep in it if need be.

I have four x 80 series cruisers.... a ‘spare parts’ 12 valve auto VX with lockers (2 owners from new including me but sorry bodily) , a 12 valve lifted manual monster truck on 38s with a spare set of 44”mud tyres/wheels, an auto 24 valve imported (Japanese) VX (cloth seats x 5) and a genuine/mint +/- 60k miles manual 24 valve manual GX also with full lockers - had a stroke in 2017 and waited and hoped for a decent recovery which hasn’t really happened.... based in Scotland... 3 of the vehicles are in a fully insulated / very weather-proof ‘shed’ - the mint, manual 24 valve is road-legal, I’ve had the auto import for 20+ years... used it as a daily until 2017.... recently failed it’s MOT due to rear body-shell rust (rear bumper is off and it’s being welded today!)... trying to get it fixed and road-worthy again as I’m able/allowed to drive an auto...paid a lot for the 60k miler , but it is minted... also have various other interesting toys, trying to cajole my son into keeping them running (he’s 23...) ...all UK reg’d....sold a Merc 5cyl diesel converted 1970 RR 2-door about 10 years ago for peanuts....big mistake..am an avid follower of your adventures....went round OZ in a ‘68 Combi in 1991-2, engine out many times..rebuilt single port 1600 fitted in Perth by myself , blew No. 3 cylinder in Kingston (Vic) , engine out, fixed it, sold it in Sydney having covered 45k klicks in 13 months and flew to NZ..maybe Paul is interested in some of the 80s? All the best!

I'd change the rubber fuel lines and rad pipes and brake parts/seals and change all the fluids and oils.
Transmission wise I'd just change the UJs , oh! And check out the state of the wheel bearings . They probably just need cleaned and repacked.
I left a 90" for a year without moving it and the whole brake system needed an overhaul.
You'll have a better idea when you see it.

Don't touch any of the mechanicals and bring it back via the Simpson Desert and Gun Barrel Highway with no support team. That would make a video really worth watching!
