Is wool ever used to fish for cephalopods? Eel anglers used to use lengths of wool instead of, or in combination with hooks. I'm wondering if short lengths of wool, tied the the lure, would be effective?
Brian Sharp - It’s my understanding that the olden day anglers fishing for eels used to thread big lobworms onto the wool. And fish it in a bundle so when the eel bit into the worms it’s teeth cost fouled up in the wool fibre. Not sure if it would be string enough for a squid. Worth an experiment anyway. 👍🏻🦑

you can catch squid at any part of the day and all days of the year. Find leveled seabed, big concentration of small non-pelagic fish or attract the small fish, and squids will be/come there. They dont like warm sea, so in winter you can catch them in shallows and in summer you can catch them in depth. Atleast thats here in croatia. But since there is always cold, you can catch squids under 40m thruout whole year, i suposse

bryn mitchell - I’ve had mackerel and whiting on them but that’s because they were suicidal and practically swallowed the whole jig.haha. The spikes aren’t much good for hooking fish. You can rig a stinger hook if you want?
Bigger sea robin and bigger weever here in croatia/southern europe. Mostly on 5-7 cm shrimp style squid jig or tataki jig. But it is rare, maybe one in 20 trips, and only on sand terrain ofc.

Hi John. Thanks for that peace of info mate. I will try the fish market and hopefully get some good news as where to catch some squid. I just hope I've not waisted money on buying all those squid lures ? As they did cost me a few squid. Lol.😃

I show how I like to target them in another vid ( the one with a cuttlefish on the thumbnail ) 😉 Good luck mate. Fish markets are brilliant places I used to love going down there early morning and seeing all the different fish.
Marius Zota - I aren’t at home so I can’t tell you for certain but the tandem ones are only very light. 10g maybe but the single one I fished on the spinning rod was 23g I think. 👍🏻🎣
Declan o hagan - I don’t know in Ireland if I’m honest. We get different runs of them here in the UK. For instance some years November - January are great for them. But it’s usually August - September time.
another great Video but an observation ...your hands disappear from the frame when your tying at times making new students to the art of rig tying guessing as to what your doing …. overall very informative...thanks
Great video im yet to catch a squid. Would this technique work from piers? I think I would struggle to keep it off the ground and get the movement due to the current. Do you think there is a way I could modify the rig to get the bouncing whilst having the weight on the ground?
Fishing_bug - I have caught them from piers before with a single lure under a float. It’s killer if you rig a stinger treble hook and hook a live prawn below the lure. But shhh... don’t tell anyone 😉🤫

- Yes occasionally when the bait freezer is full
Hi John , have you ever caught other species on a Squid Jig ? ie Pollock cod etc ?
bryn mitchell - I’ve had mackerel and whiting on them but that’s because they were suicidal and practically swallowed the whole jig.haha.
Do you ever put anything on to the lures to add sent or anything like that? I’m sorry I you mentioned that and I missed it.
- I'm not sure if I have mentioned it in this video but I have definitely shown it in others. I put some fish flash on the back of the lure. Works great for octopus and cuttlefish. Here is a vid showing it.- th-cam.com/video/hX4lPm4cM7M/w-d-xo.html
Thank you. Love the channel, keep up the great content man.
Nic Hull - My pleasure mate 👍🏻🎣
Ha ha you read my mind, I was just about to message you to say I've got a hour free post a video, then this popped up😂
remi naftel - Haha. Not sure I want to read what’s on your mind mate. 😛
How do you know they are there to start off with? I wouldn't just use a squid lure on the off chance...
Mat White - Some folks do just try them out anywhere any time. The places I fish for squid - where I know there are squid; are because I’ve either caught them on feathers, or had them attack livebaits in those areas. 😉🎣
Hi John. Thanks for that peace of info mate. I will try the fish market and hopefully get some good news as where to catch some squid. I just hope I've not waisted money on buying all those squid lures ? As they did cost me a few squid. Lol.😃
Matt Webster - You loony.haha. You can use the same lures for cuttlefish and octopus - just rig them differently. I show how I like to target them in another vid ( the one with a cuttlefish on the thumbnail ) 😉 Good luck mate. Fish markets are brilliant places I used to love going down there early morning and seeing all the different fish.
Double dropper loop or pompano rig as we know it here in NJ USA
- Cool. Its interesting how many similar things we have but know them differently. :)
Nice rig, mate! Could you possibly tell how many grams are each of those lures rated at? Thanks you.
Marius Zota - I aren’t at home so I can’t tell you for certain but the tandem ones are only very light. 10g maybe but the single one I fished on the spinning rod was 23g I think. 👍🏻🎣
Yeah don't bother, just wanted a rough approximation. Thanks, mate!
Hello everyone is there any squid at Weymouth at the moment I could do with some bait and thanks for the vids fish locker I really enjoy them
My mate caught 14 the other day on the Stone Pier, I'm giving it a shot about 5am in the morning
Thanks David im going to try and get down this week
ticey79 - As David said mate. I’d just fish a single lure on a spinning rod though. Or even one under a sliding float. 👍🏻🎣
What time of the year can u catch squid from shore in Ireland do u know john
Declan o hagan - I don’t know in Ireland if I’m honest. We get different runs of them here in the UK. For instance some years November - January are great for them. But it’s usually August - September time.
The Fish Locker thanks john helpful as always
another great Video but an observation ...your hands disappear from the frame when your tying at times making new students to the art of rig tying guessing as to what your doing …. overall very informative...thanks
- Thats where the rig and knot tying videos come in ;)
Great video im yet to catch a squid.
But shhh... don’t tell anyone 😉🤫
when is the best time of yr to try for um ??
robert mansfield - It varies with different places and the conditions. In my area it’s autumn/winter. But you do still catch the odd one in summer. 😉
What time of year is best
Autumn
A tough day at the office!
- Some times you just have to enjoy being out there.
Where do you catch Squid
Over small areas of reef.
Is this westcoast use mainly? Do you think theres any NE way
Yes. Loads of them.
@@TheFishLocker i want to try it off a harbor wall
What type of ground would squid usually be on ?
tom keal - Reef. Or where reef meets sand. That’s in my experience.
What's your fleece hoodie called I want one? :)
- Which one the tartan one? Or the navy one? PM the fish locker fb page. 😊
Love ur accent lol
Not jigging then?
- No need.
Would have been great if all was on camera
Is it not on camera?
