Canadian here... while no one wants to see a trade war that would harm both our economies, we Canadians must stick up for ourselves. The president-elect's repeated insults are profoundly disrespectful of a country that has consistently had the US's back since WWI, and only serve to strengthen our resolve. Art of the deal or game of economic chicken... it would be naive to think we won't respond in kind to threatened US tariffs; and understand that 36 states rely on Canada as their #1 export market. So this is going to hurt right back. Double the pain actually, with US tariff-induced inflation, plus the loss of US jobs as your top export market implements its own retaliatory tariffs. Party like it's 1929! Also, if you exclude oil, there is no trade deficit... the US is in surplus on goods and services so who's "subsidizing" who exactly? As in any relationship, of course there are disputes, but big picture: we have a level playing field between our two countries and this is a completely unwarranted provocation that will only serve to kneecap both our economies. The saddest thing about it is that we are not only neighbours, but we are (used to be?) each other's' best friend and ally; capable of accomplishing tremendous things when we work together. This chaos is exactly what China and Russia want... far easier and far more productive for everyone (including the US) to simply work with your allies in the first place.
Canada is a usa vassal not an ally ...time to wake up ..the usa wil walk over its own allies to stay on top ....time to make new real friends in russia and china

What good will toward the USA? LOL Where have you been? OK for every other country to think of themselves first but not the USA eh? We should always act in Canada's best interest? What is Canada bringing to the table? And did you do so well under Biden?
@ I have been a US citizen for 72 years. I am speaking about the goodwill that we have had toward Canada until now. America has been strong but ideally a kindly country with goodwill for people of other countries to have the freedoms that we enjoy. Granted we have been bad actors in usurping this land from the natives but not all american settlers would have wanted it that way. We as a people have always loathed the dictators throughout history…. Bad kings (which is one of the reasons Europeans left and came here), Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Franco, Mao, Un, Xi, Bolsanaro, Putin and on it goes. Trump’s MO is ‘if you can’t beat them join them’, and it sickens me. Americans have now been dumbed down by reality TV, social media, greed, loss of moral compass, hatred of others and neglect of the care of the Earth. Love of money is the root of all evil and that is what is ruling our country. I think much of the problem stems from too many people with our world population at 8 billion. I did well with Biden. The US gained back its standing in this crazy world as a free country aligned with other freedom loving countries. How has Canada hurt us? They are free to choose their leaders and like us they are changing leaders. It is none of our business who they decide they want. Our job is to keep a good relationship with our neighbors and try to get them to work together with us for our mutual good. A recent example of poor management of relationships is Trump’s spouting off about taking over Greenland. If indeed we need to beef up our military presence there because China and Russia are using the Arctic as their trade route, the best way to have access is to work with Greenland in a peaceable way. They would easily agree. But to spout off like a dictator and copy Putin in threatening to take over their country so we can mine it and drill it and probably rob the native people is heinous behavior. People are calling it a new world order but what they don’t understand is that it is the old world order of war and thievery. Democracy is the new world order. Sadly we have sold our democracy out to Citizens United. Corporations are now ‘the people’ and big money donations get the results. Your vote isn’t worth much anymore. Now we have unelected billionaires taking over. Intentions to streamline things can be good but allowing them to treat our country like a cold cash business is misguided. Governance is not exactly the same as running a business. I could go on mourning the loss of a moral compass in our country and the world. Even Christianity has debased itself once again by joining with national pride and forgetting Christ’s teachings. Love and goodwill are being lost. This is why I am sad.
@mariecarota763 You might check to see if you've been living under a rock these last four years? For sure you should wake up and try to discover why at 72 years old you still don't understand the world you live in. The world is now aflame with wars, conflicts and terrorism. One eyed analysis of American trade policies. Histroy will disagree with this American view. For example Haiti was forbidden to sell their wheat because it competed with American wheat growers so Bill Clinton stopped their access making Haiti reliant on importing US wheat driving the nation into debt resulting in the end condition now of a failed state. Another example is Afghanistan cotton growers had to stop producing when the Americans took over the country as they competed with American cotton so again they became importers of cotton and their farmers grew opium poppies instead. USA has always looked after themselves and crushed any competition as ancient Rome would do.
You are about to kill the USA from after the war that we in Europe appreciated. It is really amazing to me that so many Americans revert to a small town view of the world.

Just go back and study the history during 15th, 16th, …. 20th centuries!! During Gold the Rich controlled everything and they were handful of them in every country!!! Today the life is much faster and more smarter!!
One way America can win is better wages that keep pace with productivity instead of simply inflation. We have imported a lot of goods and services, hence our current account deficit, but we've done it largely on the backs of rising interest on consumer credit. Not savings. Too many Americans are one medical emergency from bankruptcy and don't retire with a livable income. Including 401k susceptible to market fluctuations, high maintenance fees, and inability to play the market successfully. Outside of 401k, most Americans do not own stocks, and many took a hit on mortgage values in 2008.
There is little wrong with carefully calculated specific tariffs, but high arbitrary tariffs are economic punishment. It can lower revenue during a time when our debt is exploding with tax cuts on the horizon. The funds available from import duties to make up tax cuts are far too small compared to US income to do much in terms of revenue. And tariffs reduce imports, thus import duty revenue overall. Trading small income tax for huge tariff cost increases is not the answer he seeks. Or we seek.
The DEBT is an entirely different issue. Part of the problem is that the US government is NOT well financed by taxes and consequently BORROWS to pay for services. As an aside….YOU really need to stay on topic

6:40 Fareed, "Tariffs are not inflationary...." Tariffs increase the price consumers pay for the item (by 10%-60% that Trump has threatened), how is that not inflationary? Tariffs are meant to buy time for domestic manufacturers (of clothes, shoes, computers, EVs, etc, everything now made in China) to return to the US and catch up (in quantity and price) with China. There is no way most American manufacturing lost to China will return and stay viable. The chinese have trimmed their production lines to the max, from raw materials or components to final assembled products all located in one town/city, each production line is more cost- and time-efficient than any factory in any country. One EV maker even has its assembly line end at the dock so assembled cars roll onto the cargo ship (owned by the EV maker) to go to whichever country they'll be exported to once the ship is filled to minimize wait time.
Since the election, I’ve noticed Fareed has sanewashed both Elon Musk and Trump. I don’t know if it’s due to pressure from Jeff Bezos, his employer at WaPo, or pressure from David Zaslav, CEO of CNN owner Warner Bros Discovery. But it’s quite disappointing. Yeah, unconditional surrender is the only practical solution for Ukraine at this point. Hitler's Germany also refused to admit defeat until Hitler killed himself, then Keitel signed unconditional surrender. When the regime is reduced to mass kidnappings off the streets of hapless cannon fodder, it can last only several months not years. It's a cumulative effect of an attrition strategy implemented by Russians. For a long time it seems nothing changes on the map, but then we see rapid collapse. "The main object of operations should not be the territory, but the enemy's army. If the army runs out, the territory will come by itself. " Helmut von Moltke Senior. This war proved once more that old Moltke was right. Zelenskyy troops in Pokrovsk area (Pokrovsk is a key logistical hub that Zelenskyy is about to lose) and further South mostly consist of hapless cannon fodder kidnapped off the streets. They are totally disorganized and demoralized. I don't see Ukraine beyond spring 2025.
The USA will make that decision, like it’s made practically all the decisions leading up to the war. The US goals were to weaken Russia and boost American weapons production, so whatever happens those goals will be considered met.
So, how is it rational to compare Ukraine to Germany of 1940s? Who is the occupier here? Why is it so difficult to understand the fundamental difference between occupier and the victim for Trump supporters?
@@atheisthuman8108 Because the plan was never about defending Ukraine. It was about using Ukraine as a battering ram against Russia. A stronger historical case for Mexico to claim all of the Mexican Cessation than for Galician ultras to claim all of what was formerly Ukraine SSR. For globalists including pro-globalist Trump supporters, definitions of occupier and victims are flexible and subject to market conditions. The US had no problems recognizing Tibet and Xinjiang being part of China since the 18th Century but since 2008 been somehow implying they should not be part of China. Easier to promote separatism than to promote unitarism. Ukraine is the uncomfortable exception which can be difficult for the US that is promoting separatism elsewhere.
China is economically struggling. India is emerging but still small and in no way an economic threat. The EU is wallowing and no economic threat at all. The UK continues down the wrong road. Japan and Korea are reasonable trade partners. Canada and Mexico are collectively tiny compared to any way to measure the US economy. Russia is at war. If managed correctly the US is poised to set itself up as the worlds sole economic and military super power. Good luck.
Yes. America has many reasons to celebrate, but our media keep telling us how miserable we are, and we collectively believe that. People who feel threatened, even if it is only perceived, are easily manipulated.
Except for America's unsustainable public debt and the growing disenchantment and hostility towards US foreign policy around the world and the increasing influence of the BRICS countries.
“China’s economy is struggling” is a BS line that has been repeated in Western media without evidence for at least 10 years. Meanwhile China is charging ahead, improving the lives of its citizens, and expanding markets as the USA tries to b0mb its way back to relevance.

Can someone please teach Ravi to not say “Umm” so much? It’s professional journalism etiquette for Gods sake
Someone please tell ALL journalists that starting every response to a question with “WELL” is also indicative of poor journalistic standards

Why would anyone who desires accurate information listen to Fareed?
China struggling??? According to the World Bank, Chinas growth at 5%, is twice that of USA
