He is a man who sings straight from his heart, and that's the reason why India's nameless millions connect instantly to him. Puritans with their nose high up in the air have constantly tried to play him down, but the audience has always had his back. So the snooty bozoz can stick their snobbery up their arse, but India's teeming humanity will keep grooving to Sanu's numbers. In salons, in autos, at the cigarette counter, and on the bus it's still Sanu who gets to rule the roost. So the long and short of it is that it's Kumar Sanu for the win, hands down!
Kishore Kumar saw similar resistance from the trained singers and musicians that worked in Bollywood at the time, only for him to show that professional training is not necessary for everyone. In Kumar Sanu's case I think his nasal tone was a big contention for the music directors as a nasal tone is usually not prefered in songs, but Kumar Sanu still managed to make it big. I love his songs, though with my own voice having a nasal tone, some of Kumar Sanu's songs sound double nasally in my voice so I never sing them in front of anyone, haha (Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahi in particular is one I hate hearing in my own voice).

Sanu Da's songs are a therapy for me.. Udit Narayan was a better trained singer no doubt.. but maybe, Sanu Da's 'imperfections' made his songs much more impactful.. I guess Pancham da cashed on that in Kuch Na kaho!!
Btw.. imo.. OG for raps in Hindi Film industry should definitely be legendary Dadamoni.. in Rail Gadi (Aashirwad) and his 'rap' in Khoobsurat's Piya Bawri

Kumar Sanu specialized in melodious songs, but Udit Narayan was more versatile... I still repeat. Sanu Da is and will always remain my favourite.. he's like therapy for me.
