This is the terrible story of Linda Kelley, whose family in 1996 became the first to witness the execution of a man responsible for killing two of its members. The man, Leo Ernest Jenkins Jr., killed the Kelley's children Mark, 25, and Kara, 20, during the robbery of their Houston pawn shop in 1988.
Linda Kelley, her husband Jim, daughter Robin, and grandmother Angeline reveal how they faced the violent death of the couple's two other children, and how they prepared themselves to watch Leo Jenkins Jr., the murderer, die of lethal injection. They take a tour of the death chamber, and fret about the proper dress code for an execution.
Kelley's emotional litany of feelings as she watches Jenkins Jr. die includes frustration with an American legal system still arguing about the value of the death penalty as a deterrent. Directed by British filmmaker Rod Williams and produced by Roger James, this documentary raises deep questions about the psychology and ethics of retribution, and encourages public discourse on a volatile issue. Does retribution give us what we want? This film is of historical interest but the issues raised are still current.

What the hell are they implying, the guy's a cut throat scumbag so give him the most invasive punishment the State can impose. Historically the death penalty then and now has always been with a guaranteed right of the Governor of the State to swear out a death warrant for whoever they arbitrarily would like and most likely feel real swell about it.

At one point in history New York State's Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison was infamous world wide for the death penalty. The inmate would be sentenced to death and a month or 2 later they were electrocuted at Sing Sing. The 1930's was the busiest decade for executions. Sing Sing was derived from a local Indian Chief named Sing Sing.

      That is so sad.
I did a little bit of digging in my family's history during Covid and I found out that, back in the 18th century, one of the families buried 9 of their 10 children in a whole year, including 2 kids at a 2-week interval. There was an epidemic of an infectious disease in the area where they were living. The only kid who survived was a young girl who was 16 year old when the epidemic struck. A 12 year old girl died towards the end of the epidemic, she must have been nursing her younger siblings and eventually caught the disease from them.

I cry 😢 a few tears almost every day. But I thank God for taking her. She had so much pain from the cancer. ALL glory to our loving Saviour. One day I will be able to see and talk to her. I'm glad you understand that she is healed now. In our Hopi Tewa way of life, when we lose our loved ones they are healed in so many different ways but of course it's having to accept the loss is extremely difficult and very hard to deal with and yeah it takes a lifetime to truly heal from something like that. I put myself in their area of healing and do my best to celebrate for them instead and know that where they are is completely unimaginable and so profound a place of pure joy and happiness and love and peaceful where they will no longer be in any kind of danger or pain. If we could just put ourselves in their place I think we would be healing ourselves as well.
MAY THE GREAT SPIRIT BE WITH YOU ALWAYS

Why would you presume that people would "tell this family how to grieve", or judge, "how they want justice", the solemnity of their situation is hardly lost on anyone, you would be extremely hard pressed to find someone who would cast aspersions at this family for how they chose to deal with having had something as gravely and deeply upsetting as this happen to them.

I'm Robin Kelley in this video. Its about my family. My parents found peace after execution. It was true justice. However, they never found real peace from Mark & Karas murders. Because the system didn't protect us. If they hadn't released Jenkins out of jail 4 years early, he wouldn't have been in our pawnshop that day. He would've been in jail. I'm the last living family member of this story. Accomplice Hart is now out on Parole & wants his GPS monitor taken off after 1 year out of prison. I worry for my safety. My father was murdered in 1994. Shot to death. Both men were drunk, but Frank Varnell had the final decision on whether to let my 66-year-old father live or die. Dad woke up while Frank was trying to rob him by getting his wallet out of my dad's back pocket. My dad slept with a gun under his pillow. When dad awoke and realized what Frank Varnell 42-years-old was doing they fought for the gun and of course Frank won. He stood there and made the decision to shoot and kill my dad. With my dad wide awake and on his knees looking up at Frank Varnell wondering is he going to kill me, I know he was scared looking into the barrel of his own gun wandering what would Frank do. They were supposed to be friends I talked to Frank Varnell about a month before this happened and ask him to please look in on dad and let me know if dad needed anything. Dad living in Des Ark, Arkansas and I lived in Alabama. I was not able to check in on him except for the phone. Frank Varnell decided to shoot my dad between the eyes killing him. When I heard his sentence at the end of the court case, I could not believe the judge gave him only 17 months in jail. How could this happen how? I know my dad had a bad temper and he shot at Frank first. Remember Frank Varnell was trying to rob him when he woke up, but also remember Frank had the choice of taking my dad's life or just leaving. He made the choice of murder. and just received (SEVENTEEN MONTHS IN JAIL!) HOW IS THIS RIGHT?

I don't know if the 90 yr old statement about forgiveness is something truthful, because I feel that, based on my experience, this isn't the way to forgive. Like that she said, "I will forgive him, but I cannot forget the day he committed it." I think, that's a shallow kind of forgiveness.
It's just on the surface, probably because she's trying to cover up her own feeling of being brutal back to the suspect. And I understand her for that. She's still angry.
But with me, who has experienced sexual abuses, coming from different people of our own, it's the most unforgivable feeling I've had to have survived, because I chose to truly forgive them, although it took me 20 yrs to entirely understand my own grief in that long process.
In the end, the people who had done it to me just died normally, but I am glad today that I have no guilt of this same thing here on the video. I feel that it's a better thing I did, though I had grieved so much for years. Now, I am feeling truly peaceful in my heart.
When we want to truly forgive, there should be no "buts and ifs" about it. We just decide to give it for free and then we move on, while carrying the peace in our hearts, which God has let me experience until today.
I understand though that some people cannot tolerate it this way the way I had. Because in the end, I still couldn't forget that we are "still a family".
Some may wonder why I had to endure it this way, and it's because of my faith in the Lord Christ. Because like He says, love comes from enduring the pain, too. Just as how much he had to face it himself until he died on the cross. Now, I am 37 yrs old, it's been a long, long time already since that had happened. And I am truly at peace with myself.
Jenkins was right with his statement, that by killing him this family isn't truly be granted with peace.
Maybe for an angry family, this is only a temporary relief, but not true joy and happiness, or peace.
I can feel like the mother speaking is no longer the one she used to be, as she said she's a very compassionate person. Now, I can barely see it in her expressions as she's laughing it out.

My dad was brutally murdered by being shot in the face during a botched robbery.
He tried to get away and his truck rolled backwards a bit. I seen him slumped over the steering wheel with a hole where his eye was.
This was October 2003, but murder hits you differently. When one parent dies it feels like part of you died, but with murder, it’s an evil black hole that never closes. I went through two years of therapy for PTSD and it helped me greatly, as I could barely talk.
But it still feels like yesterday it happened. They never caught the person responsible for my dad and I am partly against the death penalty but I would love to see that person executed.
When suicide/murder or violent crime happens, it affects everyone around them. My family has fallen apart, my sister had to take a Valium when she found out, my other sister refused to believe it happened, my brother became a drug addict and my quiet brother just closed off entirely.
    It rips you apart.

At least one state gets it right. It's not about actual Justice. It's not about closure. Like everybody says, the victim doesn't come back. What it does do is intimidate future offenders (no matter how much they say that it doesn't). If you look at the statistics of people facing the death penalty being offered a life sentence instead, many provide information and they can't provide it fast enough. It also helps prevent future murders because they can and sometimes do get out. They do escape. All kinds of horrible things can happen after inmates get out of prison. Every single time I see somebody has been released after what amounts to a travesty of a few years, I double check to make sure their victim didn't come back to life. If you choose to take the life of somebody else, you should pay with your own. The Code of Hammurabi.

Please don't misunderstand or think I'm not sensitive enough to such fates
but what still strikes me at this time, apart from the tragic story here in the film, is the fact that I don't want to know how many innocent souls were judged at that time, i.e. in the 70s, early 80s and logically in the years before . For the simple reason that DNA was still a foreign word and, as we know from today's perspective, there have been countless cases in which corrupt or greedy investigators either misrepresented the facts without any evidence or questioning.
Or because of the classic, which even today is often used in reality in many interrogation methods, to psychologically massacre the accused until he makes a false confession. (which I think, by the way, with the resulting consequences, is at least as bad as murder)!!

You're absolutely right, that's why I tried as best I could to keep it separate. I mean, I drifted off a bit, of course, but that's what came to mind at that particular time. And unfortunately I also have to emphasize that even if that sounds very media-related or "seems" directed, but there are a huge distance to the white population, the Afro-American citizens, in whom countless cases, in which on end such an absurd and disproportionate judgment comes out that you actually only have to look at the most famous documentaries to be driven out of your mind as a viewer.
By far the most violent and shocking me to this day is the case of 137 shots. short and sweet. A man is driving down a street, his exhaust bangs, 2 cops are parked at the same height at the moment, think he shot out of the car, call for backup, half a town cops are chasing the car, surrounding it, all hell breaks out come on, the car is being shot at from all sides like in war, with one of the cops even climbing on the hood of the pursued and in the end a total of 137 damn shots were fired by countless officers. So far so good. And now follows what buries any understanding.
The driver was unarmed, the cops' defense is that they did so because they were all so scared of the situation.
VERDICT: ALL INNOCENT, NO ONE WAS ACCUSED !!!!!
      🤯🤯🤯🤯
sorry but unfortunately it couldn't be shorter, this story makes you so incredibly angry..

I'm from Germany and as far as I'm realistically able to judge all of this remotely,
so I ask for your understanding for the bad grammar etc. 😇
