My mom used to use Folger's coffee cans (when they were still made of metal) to draw arcs for various things. I made smaller curves for my 19 window sills using an old Jim Beam bottle. Happy days!
Very nice you and your son playing and havin a good time. I like the music playing in the background while you're workin. It's fun to see ya havin fun. TFS
When you live in the country, rat's & mice in the shop can be a real problem... Like you find them living inside seat cushions, nesting in air box/ air cleaners & all kinds of shit.
One thing that looks really nice on a rat rod is a flashy engine, firewall & engine compartment contrasting against the natural rust/ paint patina of the fenders/ body/ hood...If done right, it can be really sharp; kinda hoping you ended up doing this w/ this ride; love the bed you fabbed on this one; really cool!
If you let that sheet metal just rub slightly on the drive shaft it'll make really cool siren noises as you drive down the road. It'll only heat up a little bit and it's way better than sticking baseball cards in the spokes.
Well, you know one thing for sure, it won't bounce any higher than what it will be when it is sitting on the ground, or you will have lots of other problems a whole lot more serious than a driveshaft. Looking good Ken. Be careful you don't hurt yourself with those diggy doo moves to the music.
The Shade Tree Fix-it Man oh you think so? well.. show me your best moves.. and we'll see bout that. hahaha.. yeah.. thats right.. I'm calling you out.. haha take care George.. :)
Man that sure looks like fun! Makes me wanna go out and git goin on mine again. lol Weather has been good and I'm startin to get the bug again. Ol brown wouldn't have even notched it! HAHA!
+1963impala2dr would love to but no heat out in the garage. just purchased a old mobile home furnace. as soon as it is here its getting installed. it gets cold out there. especially when your laying on the concrete!
JJT113 I hear ya brother.. I grew up working on everything right out in the dirt. laying under an old rig in the snow and mud was not fun! and that cold concrete just sucks all the heat from yer body.. glad you got that furnace coming! :)
+ShawnCFarm funny you mention that....the other night I went out there at 6 pm.. cranked the music.. got in the zone and when I regained consciousness, it was 6 am! lol
definitely looks like fun... if the driveshaft is gonna be at all visible why not use something like a piano leg, or barber pole! haha you know something catchy and different. Just throwing ideas out there!
+thedriver02 well... the only time the drive shaft will be visible on this rig is if you're laying on the ground under neath it looking at the bottom of the truck..same as your drive shaft mannnnn! lol but hey.. I did see a guy who painted his drive shaft like a barber pole and ran it through a clear plastic tube so you could see if from inside the cab.. so.. see.. your idear is a goodunnn... just not for my particular application :) thanks anyway Bro!!
That thing has some metal shaped like beauty. I can't get stuff like this here. My country was extra poor before- not much of the cars to survive the teeth of time, and then when converting to normal country there was "metal rush", when everyone just grabbed metal things and sold it for scrap. Lots of even good working machinery went to scrap then- metal was worth more than production machines which had no job due to economic crash. All old cars went too :(
" just getting a little step closer. little by little, its coming together." Is that like "Inch by inch is a cinch"??? I must have told a dozen people that saying since you educated us with it last week. Besides enjoying your "How To" videos on Rat Rods and various other interesting and clever topics, sure enjoy your music as well. Thumbs up on all fronts!!!
+Pappa Bob man I really appreciate you being such a long time and loyal subscriber.. but please dont take any of these videos as a "how to" I do not claim to have any knowledge to impart.. I just "does what I does" haha... ever see those bumper stickers that say "dont follow me, I'm lost" take heed! haha
+1963impala2dr You're far too modest!! Just watch "most" of those "1963impala2dr" videos to prove my point. The ones that DON'T prove my point only do so because they provide pure "entertainment" instead of craft, knowledge, skill, and work ethic direction. Those bumper stickers belong to other people like yourself ------------- with a good sense of humor. BTW, all that shop decor and Bernice "hangin out" is "shop Foo-Foo" as far as I'm concerned. Jus like lookin at a "well dressed" motor!! LOVELY!! ;o)
Question, are you going to fill in the cut on the old tailgate wall with some sheet metal once you have it all hillbilly engineered? The details you are going through are incredible. Love watching what you are going.
The truck is really coming along Ken. Enjoyed you and your sons playing too. Are you gonna start selling videos of Lean to line dance with Waylon Wire? lol
you might , if'n you haven't already planned one , think of making a driveshaft loop , all I can say is 454 , and your foot , you might sling that puppy sometime , and they are not fun when they either come inside to say hello , or dig into the road , also they make a very long slip yoke they used in full size vans , with the suspension travel , you might find one very useful when you get to that point ... you do know that thing has to be able to make it to maine to torment that rpeek fellow ;)
+towrecker way ahead of you Dawg.. I already have the driveshaft cage built. in the 60s my brother lost the front U-joint and when the driveshaft dug in, it flipped the 49 Ford end over end when It dug into the pavement..... but thanks for all the advise.. you certainly ARE full of it! hahaha
+1963impala2dr I also did a flippity flip down the drag strip because of a drive shaft , destroyed my 1970 Oldsmobile ramrod 350(w-31) , I had a loop on it , but one of those prefab jegs ones , well it let go , one less rare Olds left ;(
+udizzy1969 well..I checked and the driveshaft seems to take the shortest route from the tranny to the rear end and the tailgate is right in the middle.. hahaha.. j.k. thanks Dizz
+Mustie1 there have been a few things that just worked out that way. along with the warped tail gate that follows the curve of the cab perfectly lol. who woulda thunk it
****. Random comment alert. ***. Maybe I have been watching your channel for too many years...maybe how I view metal has been skewed by your artistic creations...but when you show the base of the tailgate 7:42, all I see are bunnies. Mmhahahaha. Time for bed I suppose. Goodnight Gracie.
You want foofoo - wait till you see whats goin on my 57 truck - when I was down visiting Jeff last month, I dropped off a whole box full of chrome things. :D
+Talisman1957 hey.. you da man! foofoo has its place :) just not on my rat rod.. haha.. shhhhh dont tell anyone but my 73 Chev truck was a "frame off" job back when I did it and "shhhhhhhhhh" again, dont tell anyone but I even "PAINTED" the frame!! shhhhhhhh!!! hahaha..
aw brother... you're not required to like it.. I like it and thats all that matters..... them Fenders are like you.. they sorta grow on ya after a while.. like a wart haha
Looking good! I like your marking device. A better name for the coffee can maker could be "Scientific Coffeeca", it's also a good name for a tool or a magazine. Are the bed doors still going to be functional?
+Hot Rod I thought about putting a rumble seat back there and have the doors open but.. there is really not room for a seat... so...no, they are mounted solid to add rigidity to the structure but I guess I "could" make them functional so I could walk in and take a look at the radiator haha
I love this hot rod. reminds me of Johnny Cash song I use to listen to when I was a kid. "I got it one piece at time and it didnt cost me a dime." Youll know its me when I come through your town I m gonna ride around in style Im gonna drive everybody wild Cuase I ll have the only one there is around what model is it? well its a forty nine, fifty, fifty one, fifty two, fifty three, fifty four, fifty five, fifty six, fifty seven, fifty eight, fifty nine auto mobile ! Its a sixty, sixty one, sixty two, sixty three, sixty four, sixty five, sixty six, sixty seven, sixty eight, sixty nine, seventy Automobile!
I remember a story that my high school sheet metal teacher told me on how they used to get the green patina on new copper roofs back in the day.... they would pee on the new copper and it would turn green....
+buck tooth bettys boyfriend I wanted to but I studied it real close and there just aint enough knee room.. so.. I've come up with another plan for that space
+watahyahknow hey man....I really appreciate you watching and offering a solution.. now if only there were a problem hahaha, a carrier bearing in a 5 ft driveshaft? na..I dont think so lol
you remind me of my family,we do things the old way,we build hot rods and have a lot of fun on the way its amazing what youcsn dp with a welder and a folgers can lol
Hope you still reading your comments......after you got all famous-n-all......snicker..... Ken! being as I owned a '57 Cadillac Hearse I always marveled at just how you did it!?! I got a QUESTION for you; @ 11:03 what's with the "Left Handed Monkey Wrench" and the mouse/RAT trap sittin on the runnin board? (WTH?); wat you call dat tool and wat it for?
well, I do try to read all the comments....but I'm certainly not famous, I'm just a tiny little minnow in a huge ocean of whales. I answer comments when I can but sometimes there are 3 or 4 hundred on one video and I just cant sit and answer all of them but I do GREATLY appreciate them! as for your question.. I'd have to go watch the video to see what tool you are referring to and I have a Dr appt.. so I cant right now. but thank you for watching my ol' friend.
+ZIGgassedUP well...if he does.. i'm sure he'll paint it up all girly like fingernail polish.. hahaha.. Now I know what foo foo means ha. That truck is sure coming along nice now. I thought you were going to weld the back part of that truck to the cab I guess not.
when its one solid unit, "any" noise at all from the bed resonates through out the cab. not that I'll be hauling anything but the bed is mounted solid to the frame which will no doubt generate some road noise. Really cool project and build. Love it all. But I do hit pause and put on my eye protection when you are cutting and grinding; wish you would too. Not trying to be a wise guy, I just worry that's all.
+GunPilot yeah.. sometimes I do that too..LOL often I'm reminded, depending on which tool I'm using and which way the sparks are flying.. always when i'm underneath looking up.. but then sometimes I forget.. "sigh" i guess I'm not perfect darn it :(
I've been lucky over the years too, avoiding serious injury. Just w/in the past several months I've had two friends lose an eye to "tinkering" in the garage. Eye's are important tools.

+fruittreehugger1 no sir... if you've ever owned a ranchero or an el camino, you'll know why... ;)
I love el camino's but never owned one so what are their issues ?
when its one solid unit, "any" noise at all from the bed resonates through out the cab. not that I'll be hauling anything but the bed is mounted solid to the frame which will no doubt generate some road noise. I dont want to hear any of that so they are separate and the cab sits on rubber bushings..
Oh interesting. I would of never thought about that happening but makes alot of sence. So how are things looking your way in orchard sector ? There forecasting + 10 celcius here this coming week that makes me nervous.
fruittreehugger1
same old thing here.. gets up into the 50s and people get excited... understandably so.. but usually it cools off and the degree hours level out. no bud swell yet.. but if it happens. they could certainly get nipped!
