  • Hey guys, the latest in the series on how to get started turns it's attention to Napoleon's most persistent foe, the Austrians! Because I'm between Austrian armies right now, the images aren't mine and the large army at the end can be found on the excellent site chasseuracheval.blogspot.com/2...
    Hope you enjoy! See you in the next one!

    Interesting to see the plastic alternatives today, appear splendid! I haven't played much the last 20 years but back in the 90s I painted something like 6000 metal figures, mostly Austrians and Bavarians (but also French, Saxons and Wütrtembergers). I can field the Austrian Army at Wagram in scale 1:100 (15mm) and two 1813 Armycorps plus a lot of cavalry in scale 1:20 (28 mm) - and then of course the Bavarians and Austrians for Hanau 1813 in both 1:100 15mm and 1:20 28 mm. Gott lobe der Kaiser! :-)

    Great video, I’ve been waiting for this one since you started the series!
    Your channel is part of the reason I started an Austrian Army a couple months ago. I went with the Perry Miniatures Brigade deal you mentioned and a pack of cavalry. It’s pretty great savings, but it’s a lot of models to work through. I’ve played Games Workshop games as well as Bolt Action and some of Fantasy Flight’s Star Wars offerings before so I thought of myself as a pretty experienced hobbyist, but 288 models of line infantry is a lot of guys. Now this video is inspiring me to get back to work on them. Thank you for all the work you put in to these videos and the channel.

    I started in 1/72 and HaT has brand new marching, command and action packs as well as nice grenadiers, grenzers and landwehr. For $50 you put together a 200-strong infantry. HaTalso makes chevau-leger and cuirassiers which are the standard at this scale. The chevau leger can be painted as dragoons leaving Uhlans which can either be bought metal from Franznap or by converting Zvezda Polish lancers plastics. HaT also has Austrian foot and horse artillery as well as ammunition wagons. Fo r$200 you can put together a very complete Austrian army at 1/72.

    Very nice vid, and useful for anyone building a new Austrian Army.
    One further comment, 1809 Austrians only had one Fahne, not two, and in deployment it was always on the right of the line. That's very handy, for Victrix buyers as you won't need to buy extra standard bearers for 24 man units.
    Up to half of Austrian Cavalry were Hussars, which were also excellent troops. And the Regts were HUGE. What are your views on fielding this very colourful arm of Service?

    Please help, im just getting into black powder and I’m a little confused with the army building rules for the Austrians.
    Under the infantry brigade it says I can’t have more Hungarian than German infantry regiments, is this referring to the whole army or in that particular brigade, I assume it’s for the whole army though it doesn’t say that even though it DOES say it for the cannon and grenza.
    Another question how is the author getting 34 points for the Abteilung? The example stats that the two hussar regiments could be replaced with up to four small units each, but with the small units being 8 points but that doesn’t work, nor does dividing the hussar unit by 8 out of 51 points.
    Any clarity would be GREATLY appreciated

      They're treated the same as Germans in the rules, though obviously historically they performed different roles (well the cavalry did!) For example the heavy cavalry tended to be German, the light cavalry Hungarian, so its difficult to compare as they do different roles, but there's no different in the rules between Hungarian light cavalry and German light cavalry.
      At the time Hungarians were highly rated, they were considered a 'hot blooded race meaning they were passionate, aggressive fighters. Germans were considered 'cold blooded' making them precise and calculating. I don't know how true that is, but combined that would certainly be formidable!

      The Hungarians also had pointed and not round cuffs on their tunics. The pointed cuffs were decorated with a strip of lace and a tassel. The blue had not only yellow-black thigh-knots, but also a yellow-black stripe at the outer seam. Lastly all Hungarians wore a moustache. Hope that helps.

    I think the Vitrix Miniatures are a better option as they give you 56 miniatures that include 2x command and 48 infantry for £25.00, however, with the Perry Miniatures that have 48 in total in the box which includes two command sections so your only roughly going to get 1 36 figure battalion per box for £20.00, with the Vitrix you roughly get three battalions of 36 figures for every 2 boxes and with their discount for multiple buys it seems like a better deal to me.

    • @Nobleshield
      @Nobleshield 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does the Victrix box have 2 command? I can never tell and that's usually where things end up getting hazy since it looks like a great deal but then you have only X many figures without command and have to hunt around for compatible metal command figures.
