You can find the banh xeo in most major cities in the US with a large population of Vietnamese such as Houston, San Jose, LA, and Dallas. But, you may not get as much variety of the herbs. The big leaves you see in this video is mustard greens which you can substitute with green or red leave lattus. They mix rice flour and tapioca powder to make the creeps. It is best to eat this right off of the stove because it will get soaky and lose its crunchiness in about half an hour. The salty limes require a couple of years to age in a large clay jar.

I lived in Binh Thanh for 11yrs.( I'm from NY C) and worked at Asean International School in Tan Binh from 2007- 2018. Now retired in Oaxaca MX at 73. Great memories, cheap living , wonderful people and delicious food. Loved your folks trying Saigon culture. It's exotic, frenetic and fast! 🎉😊

We used to travel around like Germany,France, England, Italy, Hong Kong, Japan, and our favorite place after Viet Nam is France where my dad can speak French 99% and we can find more good cheap food to enjoy the trip. Great video! I ate my first banh xeo back in June 1977 when visiting the home of my wife's cousin in San Diego and have loved it since. Also I must say that you are very lucky to have your parents visit you in Vietnam. My wife who is Vietnamese and I moved to Vietnam in January 1995 but sadly my dad had already passed away and my mom felt the trip too far. Anyway, we have been living here in Saigon since we first moved to Vietnam and very happily so. We are now retired but still quite active enjoying the good weather we have much of the year, the great food and the always friendly smiles. One of the interesting aspects of banh xeo are the mustard leaves used to wrap the fried part of the dish. The mustard leaves are a tad spicy bringing another dimension to the meal. Also for those who might not know.... I understand that the "xeo" part of the word is an onomatopoeia being a word that is pronounced like its meaning. In this case the sound of the batter hitting the wok makes the sound "xeo". The word banh as many may already know is derived from the French word "pain" or bread (from flour). Enjoy your time here!!
@@MeowTX I didn't either, but I'd take it with a grain of salt as lot of stuff is attributed to French that I don't necessarily agree with (like pho...yes, the French introduced eating beef, but unless they invented beef or had a dish very similar to pho, then let's let that story die a natural death). If "pain" or bread (from flour) is true as the OP mentioned, then this doesn't apply to banh xeo as it's made from rice flour, not wheat flour, which bread/baguette is made from.
@@datgal2u I’m with you on this. Some believe Pho was an adaptation of pot-au-feu which shares a phonetic similarity to “Phở” but the recipe is vastly different in my opinion . Vietnamese cuisines are wonderful because we’re creative not because they’re influenced by French.
@@MeowTX It's like saying Italian cuisine is influenced by South America because tomatoes are from there. With that said, some popular Viet foods are French influenced such as the coffee (Viets drink it differently and made many different popular flavors such as coconut, peanut, salted, egg, etc., coffees), banh mi (the bread, not necessarily the sandwich as much), etc. But the Viets took what was introduced to them and put their own spin on it that makes it vastly different than the original French dishes. I remember a French guy eating a banh mi (sandwich, not just the baguette) and saying how it's totally different than how the French eat it as they just put pate on theirs (of course their pate and baguette is different than the Viets).

I equate the salted lemonade to as “organic Gatorade”. I know it’s not correct but it functions in similar fashion in that it replaces the lost salt from the heat and humidity while the lemon and sugar provide the vitamins and short burst of energy. I’ve always thought VN should package it in a classy glass bottle and sell it as organic energy/vitamin drink.

Trường hợp họ cảm thấy không hợp khẩu vị với các món ăn ở Việt Nam cũng không sao. Nếu họ chê cách chế biến không hợp vệ sinh thì bản thân người bán hàng nên chú trọng việc vệ sinh vật dụng nấu ăn. Tóm lại là người miền Nam rất khó nhảy dựng lên vì bị chê như vậy.

Great video! I ate my first banh xeo back in June 1977 when visiting the home of my wife's cousin in San Diego and have loved it since. Also I must say that you are very lucky to have your parents visit you in Vietnam. My wife who is Vietnamese and I moved to Vietnam in January 1995 but sadly my dad had already passed away and my mom felt the trip too far. Anyway, we have been living here in Saigon since we first moved to Vietnam and very happily so. We are now retired but still quite active enjoying the good weather we have much of the year, the great food and the always friendly smiles. One of the interesting aspects of banh xeo are the mustard leaves used to wrap the fried part of the dish. The mustard leaves are a tad spicy bringing another dimension to the meal. Also for those who might not know.... I understand that the "xeo" part of the word is an onomatopoeia being a word that is pronounced like its meaning. In this case the sound of the batter hitting the wok makes the sound "xeo". The word banh as many may already know is derived from the French word "pain" or bread (from flour). Enjoy your time here!!
Chính xác! " Xèo" là từ tượng thanh. Bột gạo hoà tan với nước, đổ vào dầu sôi sẽ phát ra âm thanh là xèo.

@@MeowTX I didn't either, but I'd take it with a grain of salt as lot of stuff is attributed to French that I don't necessarily agree with (like pho...yes, the French introduced eating beef, but unless they invented beef or had a dish very similar to pho, then let's let that story die a natural death). If "pain" or bread (from flour) is true as the OP mentioned, then this doesn't apply to banh xeo as it's made from rice flour, not wheat flour, which bread/baguette is made from.
@@datgal2u I’m with you on this. Some believe Pho was an adaptation of pot-au-feu which shares a phonetic similarity to “Phở” but the recipe is vastly different in my opinion . Vietnamese cuisines are wonderful because we’re creative not because they’re influenced by French.
@@MeowTX It's like saying Italian cuisine is influenced by South America because tomatoes are from there. With that said, some popular Viet foods are French influenced such as the coffee (Viets drink it differently and made many different popular flavors such as coconut, peanut, salted, egg, etc., coffees), banh mi (the bread, not necessarily the sandwich as much), etc. But the Viets took what was introduced to them and put their own spin on it that makes it vastly different than the original French dishes. I remember a French guy eating a banh mi (sandwich, not just the baguette) and saying how it's totally different than how the French eat it as they just put pate on theirs (of course their pate and baguette is different than the Viets).

I equate the salted lemonade to as “organic Gatorade”. I know it’s not correct but it functions in similar fashion in that it replaces the lost salt from the heat and humidity while the lemon and sugar provide the vitamins and short burst of energy. I’ve always thought VN should package it in a classy glass bottle and sell it as organic energy/vitamin drink.

@@tauvlogphim620 Là một người miền Nam, tui hiểu cảm giác của người nước ngoài rất sợ mùi nước mắm, mùi sầu riêng nên họ có e ngại nó cũng không sao. Trường hợp họ cảm thấy không hợp khẩu vị với các món ăn ở Việt Nam cũng không sao. Nếu họ chê cách chế biến không hợp vệ sinh thì bản thân người bán hàng nên chú trọng việc vệ sinh vật dụng nấu ăn. Tóm lại là người miền Nam rất khó nhảy dựng lên vì bị chê như vậy.

It was nice to see you introduced Bánh xèo at Tân Định, near my former home and the former Catholic school which is next to the Tân Định / Sacred Heart Catholic church. This shop belongs to our classmate that I heard about it. My classmates gathered and ate here in Jan 2018.
