When I was in Holland in 1951
I was on a cycle tour and came to Bergen op Zoom where a man in the square was playing 'The third man' on a zither. An unforgettable experience.
There is something truly magical about this tune, despite hearing it countless times, it still sends shivers down my spine, a true masterpiece. Thank you Anton Karas.
Loved this tune takes me back many many years I am now 85 still enjoy this tune
THIS TUNE IS A TIMELESS CLASSIC
It was the first movie my grandfather watched in a cinema after coming home from Russia after spending seven years there. Three years as a German soldier, and four years as a prisoner of War.
When visiting Vienna in 1991, I had to go on the Ferris wheel where Joseph Cotton confront Olson Welles on selling watered down penicillin. But oh that closing scene where Alida Valli walks by Cotton with that haunting zither must be the classic of all times. I saw the movie 60 years ago no never get tired of it
I just got my Dads Collection of 78s out of the loft and this one was on top so I thought I didn't know it, He passed away in 88, So I've just looked it up on TH-cam and as soon as I heard it loads of memories came flooding back. Standing on my Dads feet while we moved/danced around the house... Thank You...
This masterpiece can be on all different scene of the life ❤️🔥
AHHH, I always think of Orsen Welles when I hear this. He was a great man.
I remember, as a kid, my mother (Australian), who married an Austrian (during WW2), raving about the movie, and as much as she loved classical music (she was a trained violinist), one of her great favourites was The Harry Lime Theme, played, of course, by Anton Karas. Bravo! Bravo! (And many thanks to the old bloke, who just rang the ABC Radio Station to which I was listening and reminded me of this piece and days, long past.)
Anton Karas revived Vienna as the worlds centre of creative music.
Beautiful music still a great film in 2023
A timeless classic. Thanks for the great music.
Wonderful version! Just home from Vienna yesterday.
timless theme for a timeless movie.
Tears come with the memory of my parents dancing to this. Beautiful....❤❤❤
Glad to hear this in Better Call Saul.
Brilliant - skill, atmosphere and nostalgia. Thanks for posting.
Als ich den Film gesehen habe ,hatte ich im dunkeln Angst allei zu sein ,Auch die Musik fand ich gruselig.😮😮😮😮😮.
First thing that ever entered my baby ears! Used to try to play it later on my little colour coded keyboard!
Beautiful recording, made even more poetic with the photographs. Thank you!
I just love this timeless tune!!Thaks for sharing Waldteufel 78 :)
Heard this song years ago in the 2001 movie XXX starring Vin Diesel. It is being played by a musician just as his character, Xander Cage, goes to a nightclub with a cop he met up with in Prague to see if they can see Yorgi and his crew. This tune has stuck with me all these years and it wasn’t until I heard it played by the beatles in the documentary “Get Back” just days ago that I came to know the name of this song!
Great, great, great, one of the famoust songs at all!!!!
*Anyone else here from 'The Beatles: Get Back?*
Traumhaft das Zusammenspiel von Zither und Harmonika. Beste Version.
My gran had a decorative green bottle that used to play this when you picked it up. 😀
R.I.P. MfG Hans
I heard this from "The Beatles - Get Back" and i wonder if this song is related to Spongebob Theme! LOL!

And then a door opened, briefly shining a light on the figure in the shadows. It was Harry standing there, smiling.

REALLY BEAUTIFUL! I WISH TO HEAR THIS PIECE OF MUSIC ALSO WHILE LYING ON MY DEATH BED. IT IS SO SOOTHING AT LEAST TO ME AND MAKES ME FEEL AT PEACE WITH THE LORD WHEN I HEAR IT. CONTINUE TO REST IN THE PEACE OF THE LORD ANTON AND THANKS. JOHN G MICALLEF MALTA.
John George Micallef Yes, better than any religious piece of music. I’m glad you like also this song. It was the favourit film of my father!
Harry es un personaje muy “ humano “ en su inhumanidad.... en su iniquidad!
How morbid. I just picture drinking champagne out in the countryside somewhere while listening to it. Nothing deep as in death bed deep!
Hermosa melodía
Great images, very atmospheric. The slight sepia tint, the quavering vertical lines to make it look like an old film.
Nice! Thank you very much for Sharing!!!!!
What a way of meeting people and get to see their talent. At first was reluctant being on youtube, but getting to do this has brought me into the houses of some very special people. You are one of them. Life; isn't it wonderful!!! Keep up the good work. Have A Splendid Day!!!!
A New Friend

i can feel orson w standing next to me ,,,,,,
When you were very young, my love affair with your great city began. It is and ever shall remain my favourite capital city on the planet. Long after the Belvedere Treaty but before the fall of the Soviet empire in Eastern Europe, Vienna still possessed a mystique because it was the “clearing house” between two worlds. As late as the early `80s, Russian was more often heard than English. There was an almost palpable sense of intrigue; one kept one’s business dealings and meetings discreet. Conversations in public places were low-key; the atmospheres of some of the little bars frequented by foreigners on business (sometimes, on whose business was open to question!) like the Conti (now vanished) adjacent to the Bristol on the Kärntner Ring were distinctly surreptitious. This music perfectly conjures up for me those, more recent, times rather than the film itself (which must be one of the dozen best movies of the last century).
+jeanbeauchemin, whilst the murky world evoked by Greene in “The Third Man” may have vanished, it has been supplanted by other, equally sinister and threatening, phenomena. My generation of Westerner has not yet realised quite how privileged it was to grow up in an environment of intellectual freedom unparalleled in modern history. This freedom is under assault in Europe and in the USA from governments, which are using pretext of “security” to appropriate for themselves greater controls over media and expressions of thought. For those who achieve it, whether vi et armis or through the ballot-box, power seems an addiction incapable of permanent satisfaction, requiring ever-stronger “fixes” to keep the cravings at bay......
“The Third Man” (aided by a fine storyline and screenplay) may have been one of the greatest examples of the 20th Century cinema; another was “The Great Dictator”, which I was prompted to re-visit by the demagoguery on display in the current US election process; and which should be screened in every secondary school!
Great comment, I have to go to vienna once a year, just love the architecture and always visit the third man museum
Hmmm.. I know what you mean about intrigue in Vienna. Back then I always feared that too many Austrians thought the 'wrong side' came out on top in that nasty business that ended in1945. Do they still feel like that? Do they secretly approve of the individual now in the White House?
Different!!! Beautiful!!!
and Evocative*
Many thanks!!!
for sharing with us
Congratulations :-))
Na banda sonora da miña vida. Marabillosa. Graciñas.
Oui, c'est special ca!
This was definitely the inspiration for the spongebob squarepants credit song
From a 80year old....One of the greatest black and white films ever and probably the finest music to it, every time I hear it, it reminds me of my mother and father who loved it! they don't make them or play them like this anymore.....
Actually they do, my mom's Barbara Laister-Ebner, one of the most famous living zither players and she plays the Harry-Lime-Theme every week at the third man tour in Vienna!!!
Thank you for that information! Take care! @@baileyebner4924
