In this new educational series "Vengerov's Views", I cover key topics which come up frequently in my masterclasses, chosen to mirror the journey of learning. It all starts and ends with the source, the music, and understanding and telling the story behind it. And then along the way, as performers we must overcome some technical challenges to be able to bring our musical ideas to life.
The examples in these videos are chosen to complement written articles, where I explain the concepts in greater depth. It has been an interesting challenge to write for the first time some thoughts about my approach to music and playing the violin - let me know in the comments what you think!
Part 1: Storytelling in Music
Alongside other art forms, music is a language for communication and storytelling. Through music, we can express things for which there may be no words. The greatest music and performances are not only aesthetic creations, experienced as a passive observer. We can sense an immediacy of human connection, another human spirit reaching out to tell us something.
In Part 1 of this series I share some thoughts about how I approach storytelling as a performer, as well as some recommendations for how to discover your own stories in music and communicate these effectively to an audience.
Chapters:
00:00 - Storytelling in music
02:33 - Caprice d'après L'Etude en Forme de Valse (Ysaÿe)
04:41 - Discovering a story in music
13:00 - Communicating your musical story to an audience
13:45 - Concerto No. 1 in A minor - Burlesque (Shostakovich)
18:28 - Credits

We are living in a time when, like never before, where you have the chance to acquire such of high and genuine education for free!!!
God bless your generosity master Vengerov.
This is not only a stunning masterclass on how to interpret music but also a brilliant masterclass in how to teach. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us.
❤ Vengerov is the top violinist of our time. Why? He has PERSONALITY on top of perfection in playing. The whole package.
I've only been playing for one year (and I'm no youth), but I'm so glad my teacher sent me the link to this video. Grateful especially to be reminded that -with words, with images, and with music - paucity is just as important as abundance (perhaps even more so, as that is where our experience of life itself teaches us to feel deeply those waves). Thank you very much.
I so appreciate that you smile; that you speak about joy and the feelings that are evoked by the music. ❤️
I am not a violinist but a pianist, and these ideas have transformed how I think about my playing.
I’d love to see him sing the role of Papageno in Die Zauberflote! He’s a consummate musical actor/interpreter.
I’ve never heard of Maxim Vengerov until TwoSet Violins.
The topic covered in this video is exactly why I am such a big fan of you, Maxim. Thank you

Thank you Maestro Vengerov. Wonderful teaching
Outstanding content. Thank you very much for sharing it!
❤
One thing, to show what you imagine on the instrument you have to be absolutely confident with technic. And Mr. Vengerov plays on the violin like we drink a cup of tea. Just we drink and He just plays. The most difficult moments look like something normal for every violinist. And His cantilene ....no words. I myself play on instrument it does not have so many expressions possibilities like a violin. I'm jealous what you can do with so small instrument. Only four strings.....
👍👍👍
let me know if someday you have plan to visit bali island😊
Anyone has link to the full Prokoviv time/timeless masterclass? Haven't watched that one yet and really wana watch it
