Elektron Analog Four - Sonic Lab Close Up

- We've been hearing a lot about Elektron's new analog four voice. From the stylish but somewhat obscure introduction movie which piqued our interest, to the sound audition pieces coming online as people get hold of their very own units.
The Analog Four is a new type of instrument from Elektron as it has 100% analog VCOs and Filters which are digitally controlled. Their Machine Drum and MonoMachine have been Virtual Analog and sample based.
Elektron came over from their Gothenburg HQ to give us a closeup look at the Analog Four.
Jon is the product manager and is doing the talking, Jenk the guy making all the sounds.
i make no apologies for the length of the video, its just that there seemed to be so many things to talk about. Also this is intended to be a discussion about the features of the instrument, there are many other videos available that are just audio demos - check them out.
The Elektron Analog Four is available now via selected retailers and direct from the Elektron Website.

Jenk's ability to keep up with Nick's requests is seriously impressive.
syrupcore his name is actually cenk
Does synth make your hair fall out?
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
It's their company style :)
LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LMAO!!!!!!!!
+peterhobit it does
+Thomas Meyer Not mean at all. My head is shaved and proud. :)
this is an impressive demo of the analog four, Cenks speed on it is incredible..
Elektron added basically everything asked that wasn't possible in this review
As someone who actually has one Id just like to say you are talking out of your arse. One of the best bits of hardware I've ever laid my filthy little hands on.
More inspirational than pretty much any bit of kit I've ever owned and certainly the best of the elektron boxes as far as I'm concerned.
One of the best review demonstrations i have seen and a great product too, well done to all!
Its time to shave my head and start investing in Elektron boxes
The bald-headed guy really knows what he's doing here :) LOL
You gotta here is music and live performances!
"MrDataline"
supravista “hear”
I loved the clear enthusiasm Jens displayed when you mentioned hooking up the dark energy.
So glad I watched this video. I own an Analog Four, and I learned things about it I didn't even KNOW you could DO!!!! Thanks guys!
I love how around 20:00 Cenk just said "fuck it" and went in a full live performance mode :D
Polyphony implemented in an OS update since this video aired. Obviously 4-part.
Wow, that's awesome. Would you happen to if the MKII is also playable in 4-voice polyphony?
Thank you for always asking about aftertouch . . . you even asked it on this. A great question in general but I think you always know the answer in advance. Except with the Bass Station II, what beautiful aftertouch!
Well I was suprised to discover aftertouch on my Arturia Spark controller. :)
Great to watch these old introduction video's again. The A4 is a beast.
The demo guy on the knobs is a fucking goooon so sick
Wow, just wow. Stellar review, stellar product
It's like having 4 synths. I have 1 and the step sequencer is my friend especially if you do electronic, techno,EBM.
Brilliant little chap it is and the cat playing it was sheer genius how every time Nick asked a question he played the answer in sync with the guy talking.
i was dreading a sonic state video covering it.
they explained it so clearly and so thoroughly...
ugh i need one now.
Genius. No wonder the body has no resources to worry about growing hairs. This level of processing is unprecedented. Thank you guys 👹
Three roll-on deodorants presenting analog four
As a bald guy, I'm laughing out loud 8 years later 😁
Wooo! Elektron!! Great job guys! I'm loving my A4!!
the guys are coool! :) that guy demoing parameter locks is really rocking the machine :)
He's "MrDataline". Check out his demos with various gear.
GREAT demo - fabulous machine.
The guy is indeed a beast on that little big machine
great video, enjoyed watching it and very informative - thanks :)
Just hearing Nick saying he is a big fan of pulse with modulation has cured me. Thank you Nick!
Nick's ultimate synth test: "Does it have aftertouch?" :D
Nice.. excellent overview.. wasn't sure about this product before but now I think I want one
I have found my new toy for 2013! Thanks for the review guys
fantastic review
What a Great Interview/review, in a world of multivoice supersaw va synths, we get a little analogue synth thats sounds chunky and bright and exciting and totally usable, and every question thrown at them had an answer, everything possible just about.
Nice one
Elektron machines might cause hairloss
Lol
+Frodrich Bismork I can report that desiring an Elektron machine will unfortunately also cause hairloss.
+Frodrich Bismork I can attest to that =)
May be the best synth for Mobi then
hahaha, I'm on my way :)))
Wow I'm really impressed by the features of this. Multiple presets on a single track is a stroke of genius. I might have to get one after I buy an octatrack!
Welcome to the presentation, with a special welcome from our diversity in synthesis focus group.
sounds very nice. wouldn't mind hearing more of Jenk playing it.
haha love Jenks face expressions! Especially @5:47
He's like "I COULD USE THAT, BUT MEH" :)
his names cenk
Well I bought one, after my dubious comments! And this is an almost unlimited super powerful, but complex, beast of a multi synth. Thank you for your hard work. Simplify the manual 8-)
that was a great explanation of the equipment. That thing always seemed really esoteric to me; hard to wrap my head around. But, that thing looks amazing to me now!
I think i'm going to buy this tomorrow. Always been wanting to see how I get on with the elektron workflow and this is the perfect excuse. Seems like an all in one dream machine. If i love it I could see myself with an MD too.
This is unbelievably powerful. Could even be a full drum machine especially since you have have a different patch step for each x4. I need to sell something to buy right now!
I knew I shouldnt have watched this... avoided it for ages but not I want an Analog4!
Fantastic presentation and REALLY wonderful sounds/sequencing. What was going on iin one track towards the end really blew me away!
The only thing (and the thing that makes me scared of going outside presets with my Mono and MD) is it looks like there is a LOT of button presses! Its similar to other Elektron gear and I should just learn the bloomin things!
Wonderful demo - now Want! Doh!
An absolute killer synth. Anyone who doubts the functionality of this synth handy experienced any elektron device before. They put as much thought behind the user experience and sequencer as they do the sound quality.
sounds fantastic
Smart move starting off with showing Nick pulsewidth modulation as the first look into the audio side of the A4 ;)
I like the stand alone concept of electron equipment. The world needs more hardware sequencers. Hopefully one of these finds it's way to me.
I'm really glad the new OS 1.1 update adds keyboard polyphony!!
almost like a Penn and Teller 'thing' going on here:)
An incredibly in depth machine,, I so love mine, and aspire to be as quick with it as Jenk!
Fantastic review :)
Great piece of gear! I have here one on the shelf and I will use it in one of my new tracks to begin with. I already watched the manual, cause I want to work with it through my Atari-computer.
@Brandon G I have here an Analog 4 Mk1 but did not yet work with it, but I think it's worth the price, cause you get also effects and a sequencer with it.
A different patch per step in a track!? WOW. This means you could have a rather interesting four bar 2-step beat with three synthesized drum sounds (kick, hat, snare) on just one track! Well, I'm sold!
Welcome to the Elektron way. :)
Damn you Nick, I just had to get one after seeing this. :) Happy though!
Yes you can trigger voices from MIDI gear. Also you can sync tempo and transport.
lol this is like watching jay and silent bob but with synths and much more polite. Really great looking machine. I would kill for one. it is on my list.
Had individual outs been added to this unit… still a favourite in my synth studio
Your wish is our command.
Great video thanks
amazing synth, best iv seen in years, massive shame it lacks two more mono outs. i wonder if theres a trick with the headphones out?
This is so impressive, Elektron seq possibilities on analogue!
it would be great to get a follow up on this to here your honest opinion on sound quality and capabilities. just to here what you think of it. great job by the way!
Mr.Dataline is a pure stud.
OO OO OO haven't seen Nick so "in-depth" for MANY a video :D :D :D
Jenk was just doin his own little thing! XD it was great
Although having three people for the review made things a bit awkward and it was hard to get a sense of the machine. I like the reviews with just one person, but I can understand how that would be difficult for this machine
id want two of them, but thats just me. Its an amazing piece of kit and really deserves to fly off the shelves and i really hope it does. Itd be absolutely SUPERSONIC if it had 8 voices, but that might complicate other things in the current set up, not to mention the price.
Looking forward to Easter ^^
It's interesting to see the look on their faces changing ( 05:43 ), when Nick is asking them about the non-existing polyphony... On the whole it looks like a cool machine though.
I`m gonna buy it to the pair with DSI Tempest would be fckng awesome.

Amazing
A wonderful video from before these two men were conjoined and became CENK
okay so the little keys arn't vel or after touch but if i were using a midi keyboard does the seq record and play back velocity and aftertouch also mod wheels and pitch bend?
It would be nice to see Nick's take on it after he's played with it for a while, and without product reps in the studio.
it's actually an easy to use, intuitive human interface. And that's the whole point. This machine is deeper than words.
I love it.
thanks mate
Multiple presets on one track! I WANT IT NOW! :)
LOL @ Jon "No. No magic trance." XD
Great machine.
i dont get why PWM has only been around square waves.. i love when i can control the phase in my saws and triangles... im sure is not something difficult to achieve. Big ups for elektron adding this to all their waves
is Jenk trying to eat nick's soul with his eyes??
The ad is right when Nick asks about PWM so he can go and have a minute alone...
Elektron hit the ball out of the park with this one.
Nick, you should've had the dude go at it at some point. The point of the groovemachine is not the raw osc sounds, although it's good that we got to hear them (and they sound great mind you). The point of this box is to rock out. I can tell the little guy is itching to get some deep grooves going. I'm sure you're going to go at it in your review though.
This video gave me major G.A.S. Now I have to have one.
Thanks.
It's also like an Oberheim 4 Voice then! Would definitely buy this if it had a proper polyphonic mode - still might. I really hope they do and then it is just the ultimate!
Elektron - simply the best!
If I use a controller keyboard to the midi in can I use keyboard velocity to modulate filter cut off or volumn?
15:55 is the funniest thing I've ever seen in a synth demo. "Yes!"
"There's a limit to the total amount of parameter locks... if you run out of it, you are crazy" @9:30
Maybe it can use the aftertouch and velocity from an external keyboard, it's such a flexible machine, they probably thought of doing that.
6:07 - made my day.
Elektron say they are working out which implementation of a poly mode to include in their OS. It is coming!
Is there a USB software deep editor? Or full midi system exclusive for building our own?
This video proves the point that grass doesn’t grow on a busy street.
Damn so good it blew the hair off everyone’s head!
This is a beast! Phat!
Indeed.
It's really hard to follow their conversation while the other guy is doing that cacophonic sound tweeking, which is really interesting by itself. So please do one after the other. This machine deserves it. Apart from that, I always enjoy Soniclab.
If you listened carefully MrDataline was mirroring what was being asked of it. That was the genius of this review.
This was a pretty good demonstration, but are you still going to record a regular Sonic Lab review?
Can someone let me know what kind of audio cables they are using? I'm looking for something just like those with my Analog Four. Something with (for lack of a better name) springy end... plus the blue looks cool!
What I would like to know is what sounds come from the dark energy when it is in the video? Quite a few amazing sounds are played when it is there and no point in buying the A4 if those Nice gritty saw sounds are the DE instead.
How cool is Cenk ! :)
