Interesting history of the mills. My mother's family were from Dyserth and Meliden. They had a small farm in Wicklow Ireland and were shipwrecked while on the way to Liverpool with potatoes, between Prestatyn and Rhyl. I think in the 1800s. They settled initially on the beach building Ty Coch house of grass and claimed the land on the beach. Lloyd's paid out the insurance on their flat boat and they bought a farm in Greenfields Holywell and then sold up. My grandfather, Maurice (Morris) Dowell bought a fisherman's cottage called Craigydon Victoria Road. They frequented Salem Church Meliden. Some are buried in the graveyard. All the Dowell family were related. Butchers, undertakers, solicitors shop keepers. My great grandfather, Edward Dowell was a platelayer on the railway. Maybe the one you mentioned. My great aunts, Jane and Ellen Dowell married Ernie Owen. He was, a quarry owner. Jane, his first wife, died and he married Ellen. Or the other way around? I have not managed to find any information on the shipwreck as yet. The boat lies next to one that went down containing slate. More towards Rhyl I think.
