Wish this was still running. I made a Straw Bale garden this year, and the difference between the straw from two different farms, and one held up good, and the others did not.

Thank you!! Finally an answer! I know this is an older video, but commenting anyway. Straw bales are only available here at the feed store for $15 per bale. Baled grass and alfalfa are readily available here and I can get what no one else wants for their livestock for $3. 😊 Bedding hay...good term to know.

I noticed that very few Bale Gardeners suggest using organic ONLY - Pesticide Free bales? Hay/Straw grown in commercial ag fields are likely NOT to grow many garden variety fruits or vegetables. Google: "herbicide in bedding/feed hay/manure ruins gardens".

What about Pine Straw harvested from long leaf Pine trees and commonly sold for landscaping?

I live outside of Tucson and buy straw bales for my garden but they run 9$ per bale, no cheap deals here 😤

How about alfalfa bales? I think straw is my best bet. My farmers where I keep bees would give me the old bales. How about the circular bales? I've got lots of questions and questions on your other videos too.

    Some great tips here.
I live in a Middle East country where a Straw Bale costs around US $20....if I can find small quantities at all.
Presently I make Bales using what I suspect are from Wheat stalks and have issues with minor sprouting during conditioning.
So the tip about Vinnegar is one I am sure to try.
I also have access to Garlic Stalks which I will try Baling next.

You have answered a question i have been asking for quite some time now. Do i use hay or straw for this application? Lucerne hay, is not readily available ( when it is, it is very expensive) in my area however, pea straw and sugar cane bales are. No one so far has been able to give me a straight answer and some seem to want to avoid the issue, by providing me with a link to someone else. I live in Melbourne, Australia (temperate climate) and wish to start bale gardening. I can see that i can learn a lot from you........Subscribed and "liked"......If you have any advise for my particular area, i would really appreciate it......Cheers.

So, we should be looking for hay in the winter or beginning of spring before baling begins?

I seem to have gotten sprayed bales... plants will not grow in the bales... they were treated first. getting lots of yellow or black type mold.

Question: I seem to ONLY be able to find the green hay bales locally for reasonable pricing - any chance I can use that?

    • @brutisbear6074

Sure can, you need to let them set out for a year. It has no nutrients left in it. Then you cure the bales just like you would Straw. Straw where i live cost $10 to 15 ea. $3 for old hay... got 60 bales last week for free, with more coming from other hay growers.

I'm an organic gardener so I am concerned about the use of herbicides on any growing hay types, and the residues in the baled hay.
