In all my research I didn't see anything about alligator attacks. I'd be much more worried if they were crocodiles. If you are worried, just stay in the busy areas. With all the noise I think any alligators would be scared away. Just make sure you can swim faster than the person next to you :)

Is no one concerned about alligators while in a plastic float tube?

I guess not. I certainly was!! First they (as in everyone we talked to) said there were no alligators. Then "they" said there were only small alligators. I guess there is a good chance for gators anywhere there is water in Florida. However, I wouldn't let that detour you from going and enjoying the river. Maybe just stay around the busier parts. It really was a great time there and we will go back someday.

I swim half the river at night, in the pitch dark, by myself, usually naked, every time I go. (i go 2-3 times a year for a decade). Never had an issue with any wildlife.
