There was a set of 3 lifts in a college campus I used to attend. They were recently modernised. Before the 'upgrade', there was one lift in particular, whose doors would open completely upon arriving, whilst the car was not quite level. Then, as you were in mid stride to exit or enter the car, it would suddenly drop half an inch or more to level. Did it almost every time... Really wish I'd filmed it now. Haven't found anything like it on TH-cam yet - though I love your videos all the same. :)
When i was younger there was this service/passenger elevator that really spookes me out. First when it opens and closes its very fast, imean i almost have my arm chopped off while gettine out and they close like when you close a door when your mad. And second its very fast , i have to squat a little or else i will become dizzy.
Interesting comparison video. As much as I hate to say it, I feel that at some point it becomes impractical for many extant lift companies to obtain and stock old components, and to properly maintain the awesome vintage lifts. It's a good thing there are still countries in Europe, Scandinavia to be specific, who still maintain, and value their vintage lifts.
Think that new lifts have no character? I found a 2004 Schindler service lift that had a red call fixture, a loud motor and squeaks as it jolts as the doors open. The car is dimly lit, there is no mirror and it rattles around in the shaft and makes scary shaft noises
Nice!! Bet they were generator run if they were faster. Did you see my one about "originally a DMR lift?" th-cam.com/video/bNzp0oZXFfU/w-d-xo.html Now that was quick!! There is another one also, th-cam.com/video/RBzNUTkqUmc/w-d-xo.htmlm31s. Only a few floors, but QUICK!!
what's with the UK and synth voices on all the modern lifts? here where i live i've only seen synth voice lifts twice, and they're both quite old (Otis Europa 2000 and MK1 Gen2). and i've seen quite modern lifts.
+Tiago Costa I think the same with the elevators in the US bleeping when the pass each floor. I can see why but they don't do that over here. I cannot see the point of the "doors closing" and "doors closing" announcements. Must be something like 0.001% of the people that use the lift would actually benefit from being told the obvious. The floor announcements could be useful but i observe most people and when it says "2nd floor " they instinctively look at the floor display anyway (I do it and i think its the same for most people). My conclusion is that they can charge more money for the lift with the the hardware and commissioning that goes into the announcements.
more common even here is to have a ding dong when the doors open and outside when the lift arrives, and that makes more sense to me. and even that is a bit rare. I love it though, even the digital ones. I for one like early digital lifts (not the modern super-smooth ones, i'm talking Otis Series 1, early basic Gen2's, and everything similar. For me, it's the only "modern" gen lifts to look for. Ofc for motor-room visits they're not very good, but the spookyness of the cab is there (people here can be quite lax when it comes to maintenance, only when it becomes dangerous do people fix/modernise the lifts)
I used to use Pinnacle Studio 18, although it was easy and quick to use, it was also "buggy". One of my videos took 2 weeks to edit, then ANOTHER 2 weeks to export as it kept crashing when exporting all the layer I had made. I've been using Adobe Premiere for quite a long time now. It also works alongside Adobe After Effects, so anything extra special (like motion tracking) you can create the project in After Effects, then add it directly to the timeline in Adobe Premiere. Very powerful software! Also, anything done in Photoshop can also be imported into Premier, even individual layers which is how I do my animation videos like this one... th-cam.com/video/QbNyQLSwLXY/w-d-xo.html All done in photoshop, then the layers were added into Premier.
I definitely prefer the old ones, full of characters especially those epic motor noise. Interesting that the new lifts are now faster than the old ones, and that chime heard on the top floor sounds very similar to SIGMA (Korean brand, a subsidiary of Otis Korea) lifts in Asia. Good video as always.
Thanks for the message! Yep, when an Old lift is replace, I no longer have any interest in the new one, except to make a comparison between the two (like in this video). I'm never coming back to this one now.
Congrats on 6 million views! You deserve it with the amount of work you put in to each and every one of your videos. I've been watching them since you started TH-cam, and I'm pretty sure I won't stop. Keep up the great work!
+russelD9 it would appear the whole installation has been replaced including the motors. You may be able to hear the wurring of the motor when inside new lifts but you'll need headphones on.
Me too! People today do not appreciate the type of lifts that we were once forced to use in the 80s/90s. They were noisy, abrupt, dark, spooky, smelly and made all the noises that you can hear in this video. I used to call them coffin lifts, because that's what they resembled! There is also another video th-cam.com/video/A_AvssH713E/w-d-xo.html which is from here, filmed with a semi-decent camera before they were modernised.
half the scaryness of the old 70s and 80ss lifts Matt. Was the anticipation of who was lurking outside waiting to get in. I grew up in Woolwich. The lifts were scary as f...I got over my phobia when i ran away for a night in my stockinged feet and walked all the way just outside greenwich. Slipped inside a tower block. Got to the top floor and tried to crash in the stairwell. Then at 1am the drunks are coming back and using the lifts and you hear the motors whirr up and down. I got used to the noise. And thought "FGS Darren. Its only a piece of machinery" had to walk back home cos the feds at greenwich nick wouldnt take me home in a panda "out of our jurasdiction"been unscaredof lifts since. But i do feel the anxiety when i see a lift vid. And imagine my younger self and how little me was so terrified.
Would you say it has been replaced or modernised? If it is modernised what sort of components would say have remained original? Hope you can reply. Thanks.
Yes, I was half expecting to find one as well - with the rotary floor selector rather than just the carriage. I suppose there are a few reasons - 1) the noise it would make with the flats just below, 2) more maintenance and electricity, 3) speed was not classed as a priority.
bam damn nice bro, ah i loved tha old lifs and yo that camera now im like wooow hoho not only tha liftz changed also tha camera witch was very weird 2009 and it has absolut stunning quality 😙
HI, you madea really nice video, Ohh, by the way in one or two days I'll do a few uploads of my lift filming, just look yourself and what you need, take it, all is in raw format. The films from France nd from theEIFFEL Tower, a friend and me did that filming for a spot. OK. Have a nice day. cheerio Toni
These lifts still look like coffins to me but the old ones had character..... Temple lifts, pretty generic. They don't seem to get the levelling right either. Why do these generic fixtures have such annoying beeps when you press the button? They should make them customizable. It can't be that expensive anymore to put a cd-quality pcm sound chip in them?
I wonder how Mitsubitshi does it. I bet/guess they probably use some old 8 bit speech synthesis chip from the likes of NEC, OKI or Richoc. The kind of pcm chip that arcade machines used in the 80's and early 90's. Mitsubitshi make or have made some of their own chips like intel 8085 clones. Japanse companies like to engineer their own stuff.
You got me worried there, I thought I'd left some sounds in the editing timeline that shouldn't have been there!! Ah, you mean the "zaps" and stuff at the end of the intro when the arrow explodes out? :)
Sorry, I had to delete your prev message. Give me a PM sometime :) (go to the main mrmattandmrchay page, then ABOUT and there should be an option to SEND MESSAGE). Thanks :)
cool video mrmatt I like the old 1970 Otis lift I filmed the john and waygood lfts at geelong hospital you can check it out in my channel I will be uploading 2 1970 Otis lift
When I do planned visits, I take both cameras and record using both at the same time. When I edit, I can cut to which-ever camera is giving the best view at the time. Each camera has it's own qualities. My normal camera's image (light and colour) qualities are better but no good in confined spaces. I find that the action camera with the wide angle lens gives the best view. If you didn't have the fisheye , then the camera view would be more zoomed in and you wouldn't see so much of the view. Also, the action camera has mega-good stabilisation - the best on the market, which is why I bought it. So, fish eye means wider angle, you can see more than a normal lens would in this situation.
While I know that having the fisheye is good for things like driving videos, I personally think it doesn't look right on elevator videos. That's just my opinion though.
Well, it is a lot faster now! Let's add a sound module and play the old sounds through a speaker. Maybe even add a cage-shaker, add a compressor on the roof of the car and place a pressure relieve valve just avove the doors for the added scare factor. Randomly switch off the lights for a few seconds on every trip.

kriskolo2013 Yeah but the acleleration/deceleration sucks!
Levelling will be very slow though
@@Psevdonim123 exactly. It takes much longer between deceleration and opening of the doors / closing of doors and motor start.
@@Potew If it was modernized by a better actual company could've worked better
I think it would be nice if they could keep those small windows in the doors, I guess they have to remove them due to vandals I expect.
I think those windows make these lifts spooky! And I'm surprised they lasted so long in the old lifts without being boarded up with metal
I think it would be better if the top speed was very fast and still the same

I'm glad I've been of good service LOL. You mean, specifically "these" lifts? :)
PAelevators me too! keep the videos coming matt👍👍👍
Definately! And thanks for the encouraging comment :) Next one is part 3 of the 1905 lift, just have some voice overs left over to do on that.
and yes these specific lifts. I always been impressed with your videos.
PAelevators yes & it appears the elevators have been modernized with a shrritz Generic, *FRIRND*
Great video Matt! I really enjoy watching your videos!
I'm not sure, watching this, if this is a full replacement or just a Modernization, becuase it looks like those might be the original cabs.

Is this the model of lift that used to be in the office car park in Bracknell?
They look surprisingly similar!
Think that new lifts have no character? I found a 2004 Schindler service lift that had a red call fixture, a loud motor and squeaks as it jolts as the doors open. The car is dimly lit, there is no mirror and it rattles around in the shaft and makes scary shaft noises
Sounds cool
Why do they always remove the glass and make the acceleration much slower in these new lifts?
When I was traveling in Auckland, NZ I managed to spot a few examples in their original condition, but faster.

the sad music actually made me cry lol
I liked the noises in the old lifts because it gave them a authentic texture that isnt in other lifts nowerdays.
