The Abbey of Saint Markovia is a significant location in the Curse of Strahd campaign, set in the haunted land of Barovia. Named after Saint Markovia, a legendary cleric who once led a failed rebellion against the vampire lord Strahd von Zarovich, the abbey stands as a place of both reverence and tragedy.
Originally, the abbey was a sanctuary of hope, healing, and faith. Saint Markovia, who was deeply revered for her piety and courage, established it as a refuge for the sick and the needy. However, after her valiant yet doomed attempt to overthrow Strahd, the abbey fell into darkness. Her defeat led to the abbey's gradual descent into ruin, reflecting the despair that pervades the land under Strahd's rule.
In the present day of the campaign, the Abbey of Saint Markovia is no longer the holy place it once was. Instead, it is occupied by the Abbot, a mysterious and unsettling figure whose motivations are as inscrutable as his origins. The Abbot's presence has turned the abbey into a place of eerie and unsettling experiments. He has created a community of mongrelfolk-creatures twisted by bizarre and grotesque transformations-who reside within the abbey's walls.
Players who visit the abbey will find it a place filled with potential horror and moral dilemmas. The Abbot himself is a character of great complexity, and how the players choose to interact with him can have significant consequences for their journey through Barovia. The abbey stands as a stark reminder of the cost of defiance against Strahd and the pervasive corruption that he spreads throughout the land.
Overall, the Abbey of Saint Markovia is a powerful narrative element in Curse of Strahd, blending themes of lost hope, the corruption of purity, and the haunting presence of an ancient evil.

Great piece. The mysterious and uneasy atmosphere of the intro is exactly what I've been looking for to introduce my players to the Abbey.
