You're *the* queen of organization, bar none! This should be mandatory viewing for anyone going on a major hike. The wealth of info is amazing. The mini tweezer had me chuckle a little bit!
After watching numerous PCT thru hikes, if I get a chance to do it I’m taking a different approach. 60 liter Osprey load carrier, double wall free standing tent, and lots of water to start. The biggest complaints I’ve seen were packs not made to carry heavy water loads or bear canisters, and trekking pole tents that are a royal pain to get staked in the desert.
If you go with an Ice Axe..... Be sure to have someone show you how to use it ! I went on a winter climb of Mt. Shasta! we had a guide that was very good at training for high altitude and Ice and avalanche travel... he showed us how to use the axe and rope, for safe travel in ice and snow!
Kelly check the snow fall amounts on the trail before you go. I hiked in 2008 and the snow load was very low that year. A lot of the passes were snow free and not only did I not need an ice ax but I also had no need for the ice spikes although as light as they are, I think that I would still pack the spikes. There can be huge differences in snow from year to year.
Agreed in Washington and the snow has disappeared early this year not that it can’t return but it just doesn’t seem to be as much accumulation as last year when we had a ton of snowpack and lots of trees down on trails.
It's looking like another low snow year. Unless we get a few more storms, early starters may get away without an axe in the sierra. Later starts thru April I'd say you could forget both axe and spikes. Of course we can/do get late storms even through May. I remember the big snow year in 2017 where memorial day brought in a large storm.
I’m very excited for your PCT vlogs. I grew up on the east coast and was used to a certain amount of humidity. I went to Vegas for a wedding and had trouble breathing. It was so dry. Consider a small saline nasal spray if you think you’ll have the same issue.
Hey Kelly. I have to say I will miss the tiger wall but I hope you like the duplex. Rest of things look great. You will need an ice ax, and you will need to learn to use it for a self arrest. You can learn it on trail but it is a critical skill. 20lbs isn’t that bad, you got a lot of stuff. And don’t forget it’s a long trail and you can make changes along the way! 🙏 Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well. -Grateful
Just came down from Mt. Jacinto, ice axe aren't really needed and this is coming from an out of shape old man. By the time you get to Mt. Jacinto most of the snow would have melted except for Fuller Ridge, there you'll need your spikes. I was post holing, slipping and sliding through Fuller Ridge while younger and more agile hikers had no problem with it, which I assume will be your case. Wish I had waited in the early morning going through the snow field, less dangerous and faster pace. GL
I like the tiny pump version with the integrated light. If I have to leave the tent at night and carry my headlamp, I still can leave this light on in my tent to make it easier to find it on the way back.
I started the AT with my GoPro and extra batteries, etc. I came to the realization that all that extra weight wasn't worth it for me so from now on, I'm only using my iPhone to record and Vlog. I'm much older than you so that extra weight was just too much. LOL you must have watched my gear video. You have much of the same equipment. Most noticeably is the Nalgene collapsible bag for peeing at night. It is a God Send while in your tent!!! I was blind (near sighted) and wore hard contacts for years. I finally had Lasik surgery done maybe 10 years ago, and my eyes are still 20/20 for distance. Near is another story (I went from near to far sighted). Now I have to carry reading glasses. I don't carry a pump for my pad. I bought the new Thermarest and it came with a pump sack and it works GREAT. No more blowing up the pad and it weighs practically nothing plus it doubles as a waterproof bag to put your clothes in. I LOVE my Duplex. So far, it has worked great but DO set it up and take it down quite a few times prior to going out so you get the hang of it. Notice there are two Zpacks black squares sewn on two corners. Place that end of your tent into the wind and you will have no issues. I had a BA Tiger Wall UL2 and sold it to get the Duplex. Get yourself a super absorbent camp towel and keep it on the inside of your tent. Use that if you get condensation. I use two of the Gossimer Gear Ultralight Hiking Towels. They have a snap on them so you can attach to your pack. I keep one on my pack strap for a sweat cloth and the other inside my tent. I've also proven that I can use one to dry off after taking a shower but you have to wring it out a few times. I wear ankle braces on both ankles. I already have one that was injured skiing years ago and I just want the protection. They saved me many times hiking. I think you can rent an ice axe on the PCT at the location where you would need it. John from MI
Dang Girl, I must say you are absolutely glowing! Really really looking forward to your PCT vlogs. Can't wait. Another fun video, thanks for sharing. 💓
I'm just amazed at how all that fits in your Thru Pack, so that's awesome! I'm catching up on your trail vids now and also following along with Julie Sheehan too. Funny enough, her partner is sporting the same sun shirt so it must be a good one. Looks like they're a good bit ahead of you, but so far, haven't seen them with any ice axe and they're past Jacinto, so... Snow for them didn't look like much, and more slushy than anything. Their spikes seemed sufficient.

Great video. I can't wait to see your hike. I am very surprised you don't carry a knife at all. Though, thought of as a weapon, it is an incredibly versatile tool. At the least, take a razor blade, the type a carpenter would use, wrap it in paper. The tip is the best thing for pulling out splinters. Grab the underside of the splinter with the tip and flick it out. A good knife will work as well and also has a million uses for fixing things, etc.

I don't understand how people get away with such small packs. Everything in my bag is UL and barely fits in my Atmos. And there you are with a 900ml. I barely use 1/3 of my 750ml when I eat lol. The GoPro mounts for straps that don't swivel tend to point to your side rather than straight forward and are never level with the horizon unfortunately. There should be some much smaller USB adapters available online with 2 USB. The one you have might be higher milliamp though than the smaller ones, but that just decreases the charge time slightly.

The mini pump is a great idea-Blowing up your sleeping pad on the AT could have caused or at least contributed to your dermatitis
Many sleeping pads have the stuff sack designed for pumping the pad.
@@Pharisaeus I find that the stuff sack air pump method is much slower and more laborious than just blowing it up.

@@kevingraham7039 yeah I know I did that on the AT. The issue is getting to the post office during the hours it’s open lol
@@kellyhays23 haha for real!! That is the real struggle
very informative! thank you :)
I love the Color .... My Favorite!
I’m a new hiker, thanks for showing your gear. Being new I never know what to take. Can you tell me where you purchased the knife you are wearing around your neck. It looks pretty handy. Have a safe hike!

The anticipation is killing me for you starting your PCT thru hike
Hi Kelly. Nice list and nice video. How do I keep pee rug clean between uses. Any advice?? Much appreciated.
Hi! What is the knife brand around your neck?
Looks like you are ready. Are you going to take a practice hike with your new pack? I guess nobody takes sewing kit along anymore. Looking forward to your quest. Stay well and be safe.
Yes I might! I don’t even know how to sew🙈
@@kellyhays23 grab a needle and throw it in your emergency kit. You can use your floss as thread if the 💩 hits the fan! Just make sure the eye of the needle is big enough for your floss. 🙏
Hello from Ireland 🇮🇪
I wish you a good trip! Health! I'll watch all the videos and click Like!
does the granite gear air zippsack have any waterproofness at all? was wondering for using to hang bear bag if it will get wet in rain... thanks.
In my experience using it my food has always stayed dry. There were only a couple times when it soaked through but that was after I got a hole in my last one from the mouse
22:45 you can hear it in her voice! She isn't happy hahahhaa
Do you carry Imodium for the trots ? You set up looks great. Looking forward to following you on the PCT….we binge watched you thru the AT and started following you on the PCT until you guys got Covid. Good luck with the duplex….we wore out a triplex….moved to a Hilleberg (not ultra light).
It’s a swivel mount and the go pro 9 have horizon leveling technology with a certain setting!
Do you know if that air pump works with the neo air old style valves?
