So that's what Sunfish Pond looks like ... Usually get lost along the way and end up on another trail. Next year, thanks to this video, I'm going swimming up there. Cool video.
Sunfish Pond is at the top of the mountain, which is the streams source. It is about a 45-60 min hike (not including stops). If there hasn't been any rain in a while, the stream/waterfalls may be trickling or not flowing at all.
I've done that hike before, it is longer and NO water. That trailhead is good for great views on Mt Tamaney. To get to Trail Head in this video: • Take last exit in NJ, just before going over Rt-80 bridge. • RIGHT end of ramp onto River Road/Old Mine Road, there is a long 3 minute light 100 feet off of ramp. • Drive 3.9 miles down (you will pass campround entrance on left, then wooded area will open to huge open campground area on left) parking is in the "DOUGLAS TRAIL PARKING LOT on left….
Glad ya like it. Been hiking/backpacking all over the US & Canada. So glad I lived close to this hike - was my favorite day hike (was close to home, 3 water falls, swim in Sunfish Pond, swim in river after hike, stop at a log cabin on way home for Pizza & beers and/or a great Ice Cream place (both on Rt-46) Search Google Maps for "Sunfish Pond Hike". A map I created with parking lot set, and description on how to do the hike you see in my video above. I tried to post the link here, but can't
CanyonLakeDude thank you for much for sharing! (I'm very impressed about the hiking in flip-flops, wow!) I'm always looking for more places I can swim in the river even if it means a long drive from central nj, I love using mask and flippers. The water looks nice and calm there too. I'm assuming that the river swim area is about across the road from where you marked for the Sunfish Pond hike? Thanks!
Unless I miss my guess, that was not the AT trail they ascended. It's more likely the Dunnfield Creek (blue) trail which ascends on the south side of the creek. The AT does not parallel the creek. Dunnfield Creek trail is a little longer, with steeper sections. Either way, it's a beautiful hike.
Correct, the hike UP to sunfish is NOT the AT. The hike up is sort of "The Douglas Trail" - I say sort of because we stray off the trail to hike along the stream/waterfalls going up to Sunfish Pond. Sunfish Pond, at the summit of the mountain, is however part of the AT. The AT winds in and out of NJ at 2 spots.
CONTINUED…. the parking lot is on left, just at the end of the open campground area. After parking, you cross the street and take the "DOUGLAS TRAIL" up the mountain. The trail veers off from the stream, I leave the trail and follow the stream. Hoping back on it Half way up, just about where the trail CROSSES OVER THE STREAM. You then bushwack/boulder over the stream (as it is now flowing slightly underground below the boulders). Follow sound of stream, up the low point of the canyon…….
Which trail did you take? i hiked the AT from rt80 to sunfish pond yesterday... There is no water on the way up... We also did dunnfield trail and there was the dunnfield creek we followed... do you have coordinates of your start and stop?

I stray off the actual "DOUGLAS TRAIL" and try and follow a trail that runs along the stream. First half of hike the stream is on the left. About halfway up you cross over the stream, then the stream is on the right. Then a ways up it flows under boulders in a canyon. Follow the canyon/underground stream to the top of mountain for Sunfish Pond.
Thanx! I used to do that hike a few times every year, most times alone w my dog. Haven't done it in a few years, hope I get up there this year. It used to be just over an hour away when I lived in north Jersey, now in south central jersey and its just over a 2.5 hour drive
Fantastic and beautiful 👍👍👍👍

I grew up here! Beautiful place, great barefoot hike, and usually not many people in the off season.
