It's really funny how in nearly all reviews people prefer soft top to hard top. I'm sorry but hard top is a million times better. I love it, it's so discreet and classy unlike the Mercedes and Audi equivalents that are soft top. I love surprising my passengers, as it's so hard to tell it's convertible when the roof is up.
AAron, I don’t agree with him either. Hardtop convertible is where it’s at! I had both a hard and now purchased a hardtop convertible. A hardtop is a no-brainer, for many reasons. Cabin noise, variants in weather, maintenance, and class.
I have this exact car, with the larger engine. Love the hard top; easily one of BMW’s best looking. BUT it does leave less room in the trunk and more importantly for me, makes it more of a sports sedan given the weight. Quality, but not as quick or the torque of the 2 series, with the cloth roof and not the same chassis look. The handling’s a little better with the top down, then use sports + to give it more quickness. Wrong on the top, can be put up/down up to 30 mph.
hard top is way way nicer, i've owned a soft top mx5 and now i own a 428i convertible and the benefits you get with a hard top is just SO much better. 1. you don't need to worry about someone cutting through the soft top to steal your stuff. (this is a huge issue depending where you live). 2. don't have to worry about replacing the soft top which you'll need to replace every 5-8 years since it'll start cracking/leaking. 3. it's SO noisy with a soft top, it'll make you always want to drive with the top down rather than dealing with the wind/road noise. 4. soft tops convertibles just look silly, i love how the hard top convertible just looks like a normal coupe when the top is up. Sure it adds a good chunk of weight, but it's also not a race car.
Hard top is the best of both worlds. I still can't believe they don't have a manual option for it. I'm gonna either have to find a way to swap the transmission or get an E93.
I AGREE. Also, the hard top could isolate the outside noise so much better especially when the speed is fast on the road. Hard hop has more comfortable experiences.
I love my BMW430i convertible. This car is great for a person that wants a convertible and doesn't have a garage to keep the soft top out of the sun that disintegrates the top. I can fit a set of golf clubs in the trunk with the top down! This is my only car and I don't have a problem with storage. People with convertibles get creative, I've lowered the top placed things in the back seat and then raised the top.
I absolutely prefer a hard top folding roof than a soft top. A hard top convertible is way more discreet, the mechanism looks much more cool as it folds and tucks away into the trunk, it provides better insulation for outside noise from rain, it's easier to maintain and clean than a vinyl roof and lastly but most importantly....it gives you MUCH more safety in the event of a collision. Lexus, BMW, Mercedes and Volvo are really the only auto manufacturers that have hard tops in their cars and I have to hand it to BMW for their extraordinary engineering they've placed in their hard top mechanism. In 2007, the BMW E93 convertible debuted and that was the first hard top convertible BMW ever released...and even till this day in 2019, the same EXACT hard top roof mechanism is still being deployed in their 4-series convertibles. And that says a lot.
I own a 2014 428i hard top.Best car I have ever had.The car is 4 yrs old midnight blue. I get so many compliments from people who say that it is a really nice looking vehicle. The roof is down in 20 seconds.I call it my BABY.
What the hell is soooo important about having all that boot space anyway? Unless you`re a serial killer and having bodies in your trunk is what you do for a living...there`s no need to panic about something so silly; JUST PUT THE ROOF BACK UP & PRESTO... the boot space is back>>>
@@corsogaming8302 This is true my dude, however... if you have a family and you like taking trips with them, buy an X5/X6. This vehicle is geared more towards the bachelor/ bachelorette type of individual.
I dont see the problem with the reduced boot/trunk space. I dont often fill the trunk space. If the two of us go on holiday with the roof down, the back seat can be dropped and bags placed in the rear seat area beneath the rear windscreen. I love the car. Just keep the seals regularly treated and the mechanism lubricated.
It’s fine, I’ve gone to Costco many times and it’s actually easier to load up the car with the roof down, since you can so easily unload and load the car.
1) no one is cross-shopping this car with the other brands you mentioned 2) why didn’t you install the wind blocker when taping from a moving car? 3) BMW charges for those options because they can 4) thank you for telling us what we can afford
CarBuzz Geread, I really liked your 2018 430i review, very through and useful. However I completely disagree with the idea of saving a few bucks and getting an M230 instead as I just Test-drove them both. There is a huge difference in the drive and handling of the 4 vs 2 Series cars. If your goal is saving a few bucks, get a clean used recently off-lease 430i and save yourself about $20k like I did. Again, great reviews, Thanks from a prior 2006 325ci owner and happy owner of a clean used 2018 430i. ;)
My dad had this car in snapper rocks blue..it was my favorite car, but he sold it a year later.., now that I'm old enough to buy my own car I got a 2016 428i convertible in imperial blue metallic with X-drive with only 11,892 miles on it!
I just bought this exact colour car and interior in the UK , id much rather a hard top and deal with extra weight than worry about some jealous person running a knife through my soft top.
I bought a 2015 4 series hard top convertible 6 months ago, I paid $32,000 for it. It looks exactly like the car in this video. I freaking love it!!! This dude is flipping crazy, the hard too is bad azz! You should see how many people gawk and stare at the top when it goes up or down, they love it!!! The 2 series that he prefers is too freakin tiny for most men, maybe with his flabby little girlie arms that little car would work. He thinks the steering is heavy in the 4? It’s not! Again, his puny arms can’t handle it. And did he mention a fuckin’ Mazda? Something about you can get two for the price of this Bimmer? Well shit, by that logic, there’s a lot of shit you can buy! And don’t get me started on the price of an Audi! Those are just as expensive! If not more! Anywho, the car is awesome as hell with the top up, but especially down, shit, woman actually wave and slow down now (they didn’t when I had my Dodge Charger before this car). I pay them no attention, because I’m not a sucker, but the attention is noticed. In short, pay this dude no mind if your thinking about getting a 4, so far I haven’t had any issue’s, well, if you don’t count the gold diggers jockin’ me. Mine is red, and a blast!
As the winter blues fast approaches, I was looking for a cool car to get next summer and this video has convinced me to get this very hard top BMW 420. For all I care, it could have no boot whatsoever and I’d still like it. This is not a car you get as your main/only car, so if you have stuff to carry around just leave the Beamer on the driveway! Lol
Why are you in this car if you dont like it . We ( the buyers ) love a hard top over a car for the summer and embarras you in the winter ^^ . Get out of my car and go revieuw a kia 😂. Greetings from holland with 150 days rain .
Not sure why you're complaining so much about the hard-top taking up so much room if you need the room just don't put the hard top down. Also I had a 325i convertible with the soft top and it took up the exact same amount of space in the trunk
I rent this from Enterprise all the time and its sweet , people comment on how awesome it is when i put the top down and it has a turbo too really fast not on take off thou handling flawless .
Old video but anyone asking if a folding hardtop is “worth it” has never been a convertible owner and DEFINITELY never owned a german convertible which love to drop their rear windows out of the fabric.
Nice thorough review. One problem with the mic. When static, you have saturation and when driving, wind noise. I would recommend you get a lapel mic, set the input levels right and check levels at editing. Your videos will go from great to awesome!
I had 2006 e46 which was the last year for the soft top. I preferred the s look of the soft top and wanted to get one before they changed to the hard top. Bought it new in the summer of 2006 and kept it for 16 years - even though it sat outside in Baltimore, MD, weather for last 14 of those years (plus first two in Germany). Anyway, 16 years later and I just bought a used 2019 f33 hard top convertible - now that BMW is going back to the soft top. (Guess I'm always one model behind.)
Honestly I never had a problem with trunk space in retractable hardtops. I used to have a Mercedes SLK that could swallow enough luggage for a week's vacation under the retracting divider. The G6 convertible I have now? Um, it can't do that. But it does have a generous back seat. :)
Yes, they still offer the 4 series as a convertible, however it's now a soft top instead of the folding hardtop. There's also the 8 series convertible, which is only available with a soft top.
I have a hard top, it is way better. When the top is down and you have no trunk space you just lean over and put your bag on the back seat. When is 0-60 in 5 seconds only adequate? 20 years ago 0-60 in 5 seconds was Ferrari territory.

Dump the run flat tires for michelin pilot sport, and the handling and suspension will greatly improve. I’m 6’5” and can only fit comfortably in a BMW.
