@@DrumElectric Any plans to show how to use Mainstage with digital drums, like Roland TD kits? If it´s possible to use Mainstage as a cheaper substitute for EZ-drummer?
@@anderssundqvist great question! I currently don’t have access to a TD kit right now, but I’ll for sure keep it in mind. I’ve done that myself by using MainStage with a fully electric kit and it’s great!
Great video!! Is there a way to add different sound samples into each pad for something like a LaunchPad? From everything I can find it is the same instrument but just different pitches for that specific instrument.
Thanks so much! Sadly I'm not sure, as I don't have access to a LaunchPad. But, if you're getting a MIDI signal from it and each individual pad is sending a different MIDI note, then this should be entirely possible!
I use the Octapad spd-30, but when i assign pads, to timpani notes, it changes the pitch to whatever i have the octapad set to. when i change it back to the correct pitch, it loses connection any help???
Hi Harry, i am looking for a solution when owner drummer is not available and we want to use a drummachine. Is that possible with MainStage? Or is a different solution possible?
Absolutely! Just depends on how you want to do it. If you have the drums as a recorded backing track from the drum machine, then easy! If you want loops and control of the drum machine, then I’d probably go with Ableton or even looping in Logic
@@DrumElectric appreciate it! I’m trying to get this to work for my SPD 30 but not having much luck. I have an SPD SX I’ll try and troubleshoot against
Great video! Decided to watch all of you content so far. Really easy to understand and I'm going to give the backing/click track ago for some of my performances for my Diploma in a month or so. Your channel is just what I needed to be learning right now. Also, is mainstage free on mac? Not a mac user, but I do have access at my Uni. Cheers from New Zealand!
You are AMAZING!! Thank you so much!! If you have any issues setting up the backing/click for your Diploma, just let me know - I'm happy to help where I can! Mainstage sadly isn't free on mac - but if you're a student, you can get a bundle with Logic Pro X, Mainstage, Final Cut, and something else that I can't remember for the price of just Logic, it's great! So if you're looking into it I recommend that option. But if you've got access to it at Uni then hopefully you should be sorted!
Hey quick question. I'm using playback plugin to trigger my loops by striking my drum midi controller (dtx m12). But I'm getting a flam delay while triggering it. I have made by buffer size very low. But still no improvement. Is there any other plugin to trigger my loops?. And can we have a choke group for pads? Where I transition from one to another pad then the previous pad has to stop the loop automatically and the new one should start playing the loop.
Hmm, that's a strange one! If is flamming slightly, it could be a few things. Check if the DTX M12 is sending only one midi signal to mainstage and not multiple, and see if any of the dynamic settings on the pad are on as sometimes that can send some weird signals. The other thing you could look out for is the sample in the playback plugin, just make sure there's no silence at the beginning or it's triggering from a weird place. For the choke groups, I'm sadly not sure! This is something I've not had to do before, but it would make sense for Mainstage to have mute groups. Sorry I can't be of more help!
@@DrumElectric hey thanks for your reply. My doubt is... The same loop when triggered in ableton it's playing instantly without delay. It happens only with playback plugin of mainstage.
Oh man that’s super strange. Glad you got the chance to try it in Ableton! I’m not sure in that case, definitely a MainStage/Playback thing, and sadly I’m not sure of an alternative at this stage. Sorry I can’t be of more help!
Thanks so much, Chris! Works a treat, takes a little more setting up but essentially the same. I tend to run a lot of samples through Kontakt and haven’t had any issues as of yet!
I was wondering ,if MainStage has inbuilt drum racks or all of them have to be crested, I wanna triger drums via Dubler 2(midi to voice controler) I would like to make live lbeatboc ooping electronic music using rc505mk2 to record n send it to my daw(ableton lite)
From my knowledge, MainStage works similarly to Logic - so there are in built drum kits and things like that. So you should be able to midi map Dubler (if that’s an option) and do this. But if you’re already using Ableton, I would do all of this in Ableton! As you can create a drum rack and record directly into it
@@DrumElectric that's great. Thanks. Ableton lite is very limites in sounds and getting new ones is very pricey. Mainstage seams very rich with the ammount of instruments. Thanks for taking your time to reply.
Any chance you could do an extremely beginner tutorial of setting up Roland e-drums pads in Mainstage 3? Should be plug & play - but no go. Yes I’ve assigned “input mapping” to “V-Drum.”
I would love to and is definitely something I’ve got planned! Need to get my hands on an E-Kit, but as soon as I do, you’ll be seeing plenty videos on them!
I haven’t tried as of yet, but I know the new update in the last couple months to logic mean they have a whole loops section, very similar to Ableton! So I don’t see why not!
A PC alternative (which is also available on Mac) is Gig Performer. The catch is, it's £175 or something around that. But seems to do everything MainStage does, perhaps more... maybe someone can clarify.
@@DrumElectric Oh I should have said, you can trial it for it for 14 days, should give one enough time to check it’s features and whether it can do for you what MainStage does.
The only thing I can think of is that the MIDI instrument is preset to that note, so you’ll have to either change the mapping in main stage (the next minute or so in the video) or change the midi not on the drum pad to the note it’s preset to
Thank you so much for this video! Would LOVE a basic overview of the SPD if you haven't already...I am just starting to mess with this electronic biz and the SPD is boggling my mind. Couple of things: I can't get the pads assigned as you've instructed. I'm using a kit on the SPD that has not had any previously assigned instruments on it. If I am setting up patch lists, do I just duplicate the first patch and continue on, but change instruments within each one? I am using this for Shrek. Any troubleshooting thoughts would be super. Thanks so much! Will drop some $$ in for you too.
Shrek is a great show! You’ll have loads of fun playing it! This is something I haven’t done yet but definitely will. What are some things you’d like to see in a basic overview video? For the SPD, check the midi settings on it as you may not be sending out any midi to MainStage. For patch lists - yes! If your initial patch is something you like, I’d duplicate and change the instruments as you say. I hope this helps! If I can help in any other way, please feel free to reach out!
Hi, Good one, Subscribed !! Can we add our own samples(Wav) through main stage, Meaning - I have set of own samples / patches, Can I load them through mainstage and trigger it?
Thank you so much!! You absolutely can! There are some templates on Mainstage for the very thing - with the premise being pretty much exactly the same, importing your samples into Mainstage with the 'playback' function (as shown in the video), and then assigning it to the pad you want to trigger it from (same as the video!)
emme hanock exactly what I’ve done in the video my friend! Head onto the playback feature -> file, choose your sample and you’re good to go! The SPD-30 should work, as long as you have the right drivers (from the Roland website) and it has the option to change to Audio/MIDI in the SPD settings
Latency is a fun one! It could be coming from a couple things: - The laptop/computer you're using isn't powerful enough - The Interface isn't up to date - Make sure the SPD is up to date - Check the latency settings in MainStage Preferences
Sounds like you'd need a dedicated hi-hat trigger (like on Roland electric kits) that sends out two MIDI signals - one for hi-hat open, and one for closed. From there, you'd then just map each trigger in mainstage and setup a mute group. This isn't something I've personally had to do yet, so it may take a little bit of exploring!
@@DrumElectric The truth is that I tried but without any success, I tried in all ways but it is impossible for me.. if you find any solution I would appreciate your help.. greetings from Peru

Did you need the spd drive software?
Exactly that - so make sure the SPD-SX is on ‘Audio/MIDI’ mode, then USB to Mac, and with the SPD-SX driver software from the Roland Website
