    Great video.
    I have two of these lenses. One is still my Dad's! It was with his Zenit Model 11 camera. I bought a Model 12 which also came with the Helios.
    Back in 2010 I started playing with film again, and the Helios just made it so easy to get an interesting picture. Even if it was under exposed it still had that unique quality to it.
    Then I used it with my 500D for video and it blew my mind. I'd never seen anything like it. I still use it today when I know I want a picture that's going up on the wall.
    Great to see you share and appreciate it. Love your shots and footage!

      I have never used 44m-7 -it should be better as they were ranked from 2 to 7 (I think) but I also have 44m-4 which is worse than this 44-2 in my opinion. Not as sharp

  • @barbarybar

    So you use the vario filter for the actual exposure, then use the lens wide open for the shallow DOF and bokeh?

    • @PavSZ
      @PavSZ  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, for video only. This is to keep correct shutter speed in relation to the frame rate (for example: 24fps = 1/50 shutter speed) - it doesn't matter when taking photos as you can go much higher with the shutter speeds

    I noticed that wide open my copy of this lens is very soft and kind of milky with low contrast. When stopped down to 2.8 and more, the contrast and sharpness is good. But wide open it is almost not usable.

    • @PavSZ

      I have seen this with some copies of Helios. There has been very low quality control in Soviet Russia. 2 copies made in the same year might have totally different characteristics. Mine is pretty sharp and contrasty wide open

      ....'tis most likely the curse of the oily aperture blades....or even well-oiled factory workers......you can clean them without totally dismantling the lens....the oil evaporates onto the lens surfaces....plenty of tutorials online....it is a fantastic lens, you can get them from 0-30£, everyone should have one, but gen up on the different factories, kmz, valdai, etc
