I mean, even if the captain isn't in the main story, he is canon, and is pretty much OP, at least at A-rank or S-rank Valks level. That said, yeah, it's pretty cool that even as a nameless, genderless character, you actively influence the story of a game.

It's nice having a self insert character that's neither mute or incompetent. They're good but good for a human in a world where some things can survive a bullet to the head.
I mean, imo he can hardly be called a self insert. He has very detailed backstory and a set-in-stone specific character. A real self insert would be mostly passive most the time (incompetent, like you mentioned), only sometimes say generic bland "good guy I guess" lines rarely (so functionally mute, like you said xD), and the story could easily happen anyways if we took them out of the picture (PGR story would have really hard time happening without Cummandant unless there were drastic changes)

And yet, the Captain isn't in the main story of Honkai. If he was, then Himeko could have lived. Obviously, I'm joking otherwise the HI3 story wouldn't happen but the fact that the Commandant is an active presence within the story with the characters that interacts with one another makes him better in my book.
They literally gave him new cool exoskeleton armour so he can actually fight now... (And it looks awesome) And i wouldn't be surprised if he might become a playable character in the future...
