- Title: Pathways into Teaching for First Nations Students
Presenter: Dr Tracy Woodroffe, Northern Institute
Date: Wednesday, 27 March 2024
About
The Australian teacher workforce needs more parity between First Nations and non-First Nations teacher numbers. This study investigated enablers and barriers to providing improved practices and pathway recommendations to participant cohorts, supporting Charles Darwin University’s strategic plan, continuing the 2016 More Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Teachers Initiative recommendations, and potentially increasing the number of Indigenous teachers. The study was conducted using a mixed-methods approach, which included online surveys and semi-structured interviews, quantitative data on student enrolment and completion, and data on existing qualification enrolment requirements. The results showed that the Vocational Education and Training Delivery for Secondary Students pathway has been underutilised to increase the number of First Nations teachers, although it has immense potential. The implications of these findings are a greater awareness of better support for First Nations students, and improved department of education and higher education processes impacting the transition between secondary and tertiary education.
