Awesome, PC Engine is the most underrated console of all time. To some this graphics may seem outdated compared to the current consoles today. However, I spent most of my pocket money 30 yrs ago on arcade games/ coin-ops and the PC Engine was the closest emulation of the real thing. I.E. Irem's Ninja Spirit. I never personally knew anyone who owned a PC Engine , Japanese Import only. You needed to be Rich to afford it back in tha day ,and I was dead poor. Appreciate the upload Thanks for the memories
If japanese games would have been ported to american turbografx 16 would have sold several million i am sure of it! Imagine what street fighter 2 would have done to sales if it was a pack in game back then!
@@jimmybiggs9230 Also if they released the system much sooner and the same size as the original PCE instead of taking extra time to "super-size" it for no good reason giving us a mostly empty plastic box that was the TG-16. In Japan it was the direct response and competitor to the Famicom (NES) and the first system to feature 16-bit graphics, in the US it was not which greatly hurt it's potential. Imagine jumping straight from NES to this?! This was the only upgrade, "next-gen" system when released and is how the PCE dominated Japan, reaching #1 status for a time period. Ironically they didn't release more games in the US mainly because they didn't sell enough systems but in order to sell systems you need good games and a solid library to make people want it!
My friend John had this exact version of ninja spirit on turbo graphics 16. This was 1991,92. His folks had money, I grew up in a single parent household with very little money to go around for us kids. It wasn't until other more advanced systems came out that he let me borrow this one. I enjoyed the hell out of it.
I'm guessing some of the R-Type staff played a part in the arcade original.. the game has a very similar vibe.. the palette and pixel art style in particular.
Good eye. I notice this all the time with older games. A lot of stuff is recycled between games, and there is a vibe that is unmistakable for each company.
It's not as hard as the NES Battletoads airbikes on the third level. The first half is hardest. There's a few points where you realize the moments to move from right to the left. Lots of repetition. Once your on the left wall, the second half of the fall is easier. You have to be 'one ninja's width' away from the left wall for the most part. So second from the left? That's the sweet spot where only one more ninja will appears, so it's easier cause you only focus on evading one, instead of learning more pattern. As the video shows, being one width from the left is safe for most the second half. If you ever come back to this game, maybe post small sticky notes on the screen to know the exact spots to be. Use savestates if you play through emulators The final boss is really easy. I think continues let you start in his lair, too. You won't need to continue much to beat him. The hardest boss is the multiple swordsmen that guard the rocks you'll need to jump from.
Thanks for this video!!! As a kid I has this g and and always made it to the last stage but would always die on the way down, but now that I have this game again I beat it thanks to your video!! Appreciate it!!!
15:03 This is for anyone trying to beat the falling part. I would probably give this game a perfect score if it weren't for this level. Otherwise it's an action packed underrated gem.
I hated the falling sequence in the last level. The last boss was so weak compared to the some of the others before him. But I love the game to death back in the days.
chuckobscure I hope your wrong, but your probably right. I'll admit that I beat that game on an emulator, and used a save state with a whole lot of mulligans to get past that point. Pretty much that whole game is hard, but that drop is just brutal.
chuckobscure Maybe. I have to admit, some of the speed runs on other channels are really good. I saw a guy finish Ninja Gaiden in something like 15 minutes. I was so impressed I didn't see any signs of cheats, but now I'm a little jaded lol.
It took me years to beat this game because of that last jump and I only figured out the right path to fall along today because of this video. Even if you know where to jump the controls make it strangely difficult to actually perform.
Arcade mode also gives only 1 health instead of 5 so tougher in my opinion. Okay, what gives? Some suggestions/pointers for the next time you play... Boss One: Jump in the middle and use upgraded Throwing Stars. Down in 2 seconds. Boss Two: Bamboo Bombs or Throwing Stars. I find Bamboo Bombs can take him out in 2 to 3 seconds. Boss Three: You got it! Stage Four: You can run on the ceiling man! Oh, now you use that ability. Lol Boss Four: Bamboo Bombs dude! Boss Five: Anything ranged works here. Throwing Stars, Bamboo Bombs, even the chain and blade work better than the Katana. Boss Six: If you just jump up on the boulder repeatedly and throw the bombs down the enemy can't hurt you and they all take damage. Final Boss: You got it again!
Y'know you played this game on P.C. Engine Mode and didn't get hit once which means you could've played this game on arcade mode and fared the same way, some of the boss battles were long and dragged out but overall you "skilled" the game rather nicely.
This game kicked so much ass when I was a kid. I was the only kid in my neighborhood that owned a TG-16, and kids would come over to play everyday, cause everyone else had an NES.
Other games around this time were all about bright colors and punchy techno music, this game had a dark immersive vibe, one of the GOATs of the turbo grafix system.
Astonishing conversion from the arcade to the PC Engine! Even if this console was only 8-bit it manage to reproduce everything very faithfully to the original and even better than that it looks like far more playable (I found the original really too chaotic and hectic). Anyone knows if there is an emulator of the PC Engine?
I am trying to figure out if those enemies who float in the air with what looks like paper parachutes like flying squirrels are from old Japanese history or folklore? Is it just a made up enemy?
This game probly had the most flickering and slow downs I remember lol I didn't it at all though it was cool still to have so much going on in the screen. One of my favorite games ever
Well, even if you knew what to do, it wasn't exactly easy. You had to get the first drop perfect to have it work. The player does it here but makes it look effortless. You still had to maintain you position on the descent, but once you were all the way left, it was easy. I tried the slo-mo thing too, before I knew the trick, & that never worked. We used to hang around the magazines & write codes & tips on our hands so we didn't have to buy the magazines, I remember writing this one down XD
Funny, I was just thinking about this game a couple of days ago, without remembering the name... I think my mate had it on Atari ST and I just watched him play this (mostly because I wasn't really good at most of the games). :P
I beat this and there was also another ending, maybe it was doing it on a hard difficulty or something, I forget, but it shows you running with other wolves iirc
Tony Lau hey thx for the answer! you know someone who knows or speak japanese, i need to translate a video but i don't found the letters in any japanese alphabet. thanks
seems some particular TH-cam folks are getting into the ol' 'Gine as of late, huh? ^^ ^-- Probably because of the new mednafen emulator build that now supports TAS.
Yeah that was a REAL bitch, that pit. There was only one way of doing it right, you had to drop off the edge of the cliff (no jumping) and then press hard to the left, & if you did it with the correct timing you would glide through an open area. When you got near the wall, you just kept yourself about a character's width of space away from it, & the fall from there was wide open. I remember this game for being a lot more "flickery" than other TG16 games, it was somewhat annoying.

I had the c64 version now i have this version many many years later
This video reminded me how beautiful this game was. Actually, the graphic and style still very top notch for today's standard.
yes it is, i love going back and playing this game I just wish there were new levels lol
I'm guessing some of the R-Type staff played a part in the arcade original.. the game has a very similar vibe.. the palette and pixel art style in particular.

You said it brother👍
Yeah a lot of IREM games have similar vibes
One of the greatest games on pc engine!
Jimmy Biggs agreed. My FAVORITE game of all times to be exact
one of the BEST hucard titles. Still awesome after all these years
I could never get past the part where you have to dive past all the ninjas. Had to watch this just to see if it was possible.
We'll done!
I did it back in the day, yes frustrating as all get out but achievable.
@@jrhamilton4448 nice 1, my bro

That falling part was so stupid. I only beat the game years and years later after buying it trying to find the one place you can fall without dying.
And even getting to the sweet spot takes a few tries!!!! Imagine how many quarters that machine ate on just that part alone!!!
😂That shit would piss me off so much i dont know how many times i threw the fucking remote at the tv it was a damn miracle it didn't break😂
I hated the falling sequence in the last level. The last boss was so weak compared to the some of the others before him. But I love the game to death back in the days.
T-0815 made the drop in stage 5 look so easy, well done. Ninja Spirit is another example of an underrated game on an underrated system.
chuckobscure I hope your wrong, but your probably right.

I was so impressed I didn't see any signs of cheats, but now I'm a little jaded lol.
chuckobscure I always get to the 2nd Jaquio with half power, die get sent back to 6-1 and quit. that shits soooo frustrating.
It took me years to beat this game because of that last jump and I only figured out the right path to fall along today because of this video. Even if you know where to jump the controls make it strangely difficult to actually perform.

Played it all the way to the end when it was released. Fantastic game for its time. TurboDuo/PCEngine FTW
This game was years ahead of its time
One of the best looking AND playing titles for the TurboGrafx. Pretty accurate to the arcade version too.
This game is awesome
Other games around this time were all about bright colors and punchy techno music, this game had a dark immersive vibe, one of the GOATs of the turbo grafix system.

si, existe uno llamado bizhawk, es el unico emulador de pc engine que me ha gustado
What a hidden gem.
God how i miss my past 😭
@Alphonze56 Play it on "arcade mode" instead of "pc-engine mode" and you get a different ending.
If you beat this game on arcade mode you get a bonus scene where you rejoin a pack of wolves.
6:43 that boss is so well animated!
Ever wanted to se a cross between Contra and Ninja Gaiden 2?
I am trying to figure out if those enemies who float in the air with what looks like paper parachutes like flying squirrels are from old Japanese history or folklore? Is it just a made up enemy?
Almost half a million points. Sweet.
Why do the bosses explode so much when killed? Are they robots carrying loads of fuel or tnt?
This game probly had the most flickering and slow downs I remember lol I didn't it at all though it was cool still to have so much going on in the screen. One of my favorite games ever
Who ripped off who? This or Ninja Gaiden?
Now a play through on "arcade mode" of this game! Different ending :)
I played this on gameboy. This game is very good, but I didn't manage to beat it. Thanks for the video.
these graphics are not only terrific but flawless, not one bad pixel. Too bad this was a system that crashed B4 it even had a chance to exist.
why have a pc engine version which gives you 5 hits but kills you in one hit anyway half the time?
Intro music sounds similar to Teena Marie "Out On A Limb"
besides the art, is there any difference between the pc engine and turbografx 16 versions?
Nope, none whatsoever
What "computer program" plays a game flawlessly? I'm really interested.
this game is a shooter disguised as a hack and slash
It's both actually, you can't do everything just with the shurikens.
Actually most of the 2d platformers are shooters , if you look close at it . even mario , megaman , etc.

Btw there is no need to get excited about player skill here. The play throughs are done using a computer program using only algorithms.
Pulled a Metroid there in the ending.
The arcade version had a
time limit.
what means the red letters between levels?
Level number and name of the boss.

It's only me or this game quite reminds Sekiro in some ways ? besides the fact game passes in sengoku period

Irem was famous for his shoot em up.
