  • In this video we are reviewing the Reolink Duo, a Dual Lens camera that has two 4 megapixel image sensors in one camera body, giving you an incredibly wide field of view, as well as spot lights for colour night mode, local person and object detection and so many other nice features, but have their been any compromises made in order to make the Reolink Duo happen?

      If your expectations where to high so where mine... I actually choose not to get this camera but 2 seperate camera's because that gives me more flexibility. If there would have been 1 camera feed/stream I would have gone for the Duo.

      My expectations were EXACTLY the same. I even initially though they were going to use the sensors from the 810.
      I was REALLY disappointed when I found out it reuses the surplus crap sensors from their, older, no longer really selling, cameras.

      You could easily get 2 4k cams and fit them side to side and line up the images. This way would be much better if you are seeing 2 separate feeds on the dua. But if you can't get another cable through for whatever reason then maybe this duo has a place.

    As far as I know Reolink solved the 2 separate image issue by software and now you can see only one image (stitched)

    I think I would still prefer my separate views/cameras, especially with using the Birdseye view from Frigate where it displays the camera where motion was detected. And the fact that i get better resolution and probably more "focused" or increased IR/light per cam

    Came for the camera, stayed for the dogs. 7/5, would recommend.
    I expected a 'single image' at first, but thinking about it, playback would be a nightmare. Screens just aren't set up for that ratio. You'd end up with it being encoded as a 'normal' res with huge black bars top and bottom (and killing the resolution, and defeating the entire point) or encoding it at 5120x1440 and it being a pain to view. You'd either need a dualscreen setup (not useful for phones) or the player would need to handle panning (would probably be bespoke then and a pain to share the video).
    A good compromise might have been 2 4:3 streams stitched into a single 8:3 video, that would fit fairly well into a 16:9 ratio (smaller bands at least?)

    • @EverythingSmartHome

  • @SmithyScotland
    @SmithyScotland 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Expected one picture also. Guessing the old style mount isn't strong enough to hold the additional weight of the much larger camera. Wondering if the night image issue was caused by different background levels of light between the left and right cameras.

    • @EverythingSmartHome
      @EverythingSmartHome  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The old style mount handled more weight IMO, some of the optically zoom cameras were pretty heavy and it could hold those, this thing is really light

    So basically, just buy 2 x 810's if you want that much coverage? This was a really helpful video in demonstrating the weaknesses/ limitations of the Duo, and that's without considering the fact that the output for the two sides don't match in terms of colours/ contrast.

  • @DigitalArchmage
    @DigitalArchmage 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    To me, it solves a hardware issue. I'm sure people feel weird about putting multiple cameras side by side, pointing in different directions. Multiple cameras in one enclosure sounds OK to me. From your description I first was wondering if the two lenses pointed at the same spot (so you somehow get 'zoom' for a portion of the image)

  • @ACAIDC
    @ACAIDC 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You're not alone. I completely agree with everything you've said. The build quality is very poor considering their other POE cameras are of a metal conduction. This camera wouldn't stand a chance if someone tried to vandalise it. The fact that you're not getting one panoramic camera feed is a huge disappointment and actually pretty misleading. You're much better off just installing two regular POE cameras next to each other than using this device at the moment.

  • @RaiderLacrosse29
    @RaiderLacrosse29 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The ability to have one giant image would be great. But it shouldn't be a deal breaker. this camera solves an issue with hardware where you need to have two cameras side by side to cover a large area. Also, this camera would best be used in detection zones with night time color turned on so that you can get physical descriptions, like color of clothes, hats, skin, etc., and then combining it with hi res 8-12MP low angle cameras in recognition & identification zones for facial and license plate identification.
    no one camera is going to do it all. this is a great wide coverage detection camera. and the lack of being a singular image is only a minor inconvenience that has already been around. So at least the hardware side is solved.

    Just 2 questions. The right image seems much more detailed than the left one. Is it just my imagination or is there really such a noticeable difference between them?
    And I noticed the left one is has "dual" in it's name where the right one carries "duel" in it. Who made that happy accident? 😄

    • @EverythingSmartHome
      @EverythingSmartHome  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Do you mean on the large image? There may be a difference in the colour balance between images since they are independent sensors.

      @Sierra-Whisky 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EverythingSmartHome for example at 9:27, where you stiched the 2 images together, it seems as if the right image is much more detailed. I was wondering if it were actually more detailed or just a sort of optical illusion because of color differences.

    FYI, this camera is just a fancy case that reuses the surplus internals from their older and no longer profitable 2K cameras.
    The 810A dropped down to about 100 Euro. My recommendation is to just buy two and take the time to position them side by side.

    I understand your concern but I didn't actually needed one big feed. The two separate camera views are just fine for my needs. I basically just wanted two cameras mounted to one spot so this is just fine. I don't need to feed another ethernet cable which will be a nightmare in the location I have the cameras. Thanks for pointing out the motion of the mount, I'll have to be very careful before permanently mounting it, otherwise I'll see more of the neighbor more than our house!

      Exactly! And glad to see someone who can think for themselves rather then use someone else's thoughts entirely.
      Don't get me wrong I absolutely enjoy the video and his point of view, but at the end of it it's just that, HIS point of view, HIS opinion, you must think about what it is YOU need. This works great in a large property, to cover a larger area and instead of having to place 4 cameras in different points 2 will do or even in a scenario where you have a bit larger area and you need two cameras to view the full area space from one end to the other, this will save you the trouble of having to run two separate cameras, cables, installation. You mention 15 fps is the max but that's just not true is it? That's just the standard, you can go in and change it your self correct? So much more I could get into but never mind.
      As I stated never mind my disagreement, it's just that difference of opinion, I ver much enjoyed your great video! Thank you kindly for your hard work, it does not to go unappreciated from any of us, the viewers and subscribers of your channel 😊.

      I agree with Island Capture. My house is in a large cul-de-sac and I like to keep an eye on things across the whole cul-de-sac. For the longest time I had two cameras with two feeds that I painstakingly angled apart from the other to make it look like one wide view. It took up two squares on my screen, but that was fine because the cul-de-sac was where all the action was. This double camera from Reolink is innovative and they are thinking outside the box. 🙂

    The camera should stitch the images together by default using firmware, it's ridiculous that you have to download separate images. Who thought that was a good idea?

  • @DigitalArchmage
    @DigitalArchmage 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thinking about it more - wouldn't a single image break nearly everything in a workflow after you have a clip you want to deal with? You couldn't share the clips easily (you'd have to use a video editor) - a simple action like sharing a clip to someone's phone, putting on youtube/FB would be cumbersome. And then, Reolink would have to rewrite all their software. Any 3rd party stuff that isn't expecting such a weird resolution would break. Reolink's software team is already pretty lazy most of the time - I can't imagine them supporting it well. Camera outputs need to roughly match monitors/viewports, otherwise you're going to letterbox when you view it.
