After 30+ years playing tenor in jazz, brass, and wind bands, I find myself playing with an orchestra and large brass ensemble that includes alto parts. I'm taking delivery of a new alto shortly - very excited! Your video is an excellent primer for someone like myself who does not have a very good idea of how to approach this unique instrument. Well done.

Wow, this a lot more info than is typical online. You have really laid out some core concepts to approach the alto. I appreciate your points on air and tongue.

This really helped. I play trombone and trumpet and would really like to play alto. I do not own one and I'm considering buying one. I just love the sound

If I want to play the trombone and trumpet, which one would you recommend to start on?

Long time bass trombone player and I had been sort of dabbling with the idea of moving to Tenor/Alto horn for a change in pace..then, I remembered the Alto Trombone existed.

Incredibly helpful indeed! I just purchased a lower level alto trombone and it should arrive in a few days. What suggestions do you have for a beginner on alto trombone in terms of learning the new placement of notes on the slide in the quickest fashion possible? Also what kind of a practice routine would you recommend for a beginner on the alto?

@Devin: You'll find the most rapid improvement when you focus on the sound and make your practicing as musical as possible. Contact me at the email address at the end of the video if you are interested in lessons!

Incredibly helpful and insightful information! Any good "beginner" model altos you would recommend?

Thank you Kevin! I must admit that my knowledge of available instruments is limited but I did notice that Dillon has a "Student" level Alto available. Most brands only carry professional models.

I've heard really good things about the Moz alto if you don't want to spend more than about $300. If you want something a little bit higher quality, the JP Rath alto retails for around $1000

Hello Andrew. Your inputs are as always, superb! I really enjoy and learn a lot form your classes and videos, not to mention your playing... great! I also enjoy and try to "get in" that very relaxed mood you always show.
By the way, let me say that the Spanish subtitles on this video are not fully correct...I'm from Argentina and my primary language is obviously Spanish so I can naturally notice that problems... some of them very obvious others more subtle... it looks as there is something automatic (software) or "dictionary made" on the translation, etc.... For instance: in Spanish , you don't "play" a musical instrument (for that matters neither music al all) ... In Spanish that word is applied for any "ludic" activity ... you can "play futbol" or "play cards" but in which concerns to a musical instrument in Spanish you say "tocar" .... (which plainly translated would mean "to touch" , word that have the same meaning as in English BUT with the exception of musical instruments or music.... So, in Spanish you say " Tocar el trombón" ...NOT "jugar -play- el trombón"... (that sounds like you are kicking a trombone around a field like a ball) ... OK. In case you need some kind of help with this I can make the translations for you if you like (It would ve a pleasure) . Have a nice day!

Why is it harder to play lower notes on the alto? Im self taught and it seems when I try to go lower than Bflat the rest of the notes sound like false tones.

    Hello Andrew,
I find your vides quite inspiring. I am a trombonist aged 45 and I am transitioning to trumpet since a couple of years (after having seen James Morrison :-). Not easy for me to gain a good range yet on the trumpet, but the sound is good.
Do you have some suggestion for people like me who are trying to double trumpet and trombone? Maybe this is an idea for the next video...

      Hello Paolo,
That's great that you are getting a good sound on trumpet! How much of your practice time do you devote to trumpet versus trombone? Are you using the same kind of embouchure for both?

      Andrew Williams Hello Andrew.
Since a few months I buzz every day while driving to my workplace, I buzz the same exercise on the tbone mouthpiece then on the trumpet mpc (people are staring at me when I stop at a traffic light :-). I manage to study on the instruments only a couple of days a week x 40', what I do is to switch frequently from one to the other. Then I have once a week reharsal with a funky group where play only tbone, and with a soul group, where I play both.
I think I am using more and less the same embochure, but on the trumpet I am trying to use less air and use more the mouth aperture to switch to different harmonics. I found my range on trombone improved quite a lot since I am playing trumpet, but still cannot play with safety on the trumpet above concert F.
      Thank you for your attention.

I think I would have to observe you in order to really know for sure. I know that when I doubled on trumpet I used a totally different embouchure. I found that the trombone embouchure didn't "fit" into the trumpet mouthpiece very well. Once I decided to use a different one, my range improved. Are you doing trumpet exercises to improve your valve technique and tonguing?

Actually I am mostly doing long tones and basic Arban studies.

How do you create such a smooth vibrato with such little oral strain? I'm used to a weaker diaphragm vibrato, however I've been told jaw vibrato is more effective (I can't pull off a consistent jaw/lip vibrato yet.)

    • @AndrewWilliamsMusic
      @AndrewWilliamsMusic  7 ปีที่แล้ว

I recommend the practice of long tones in various ranges. The vibrato is something that can be practiced within a long tone.

Liking your ‘flugelhorn’ sound, other alto players sound more like small bore tenor bone players
