      Your tuneup drill is magical! I didn’t walk them together, but singly both of my dogs looked up to me, and for the first time, my three-year-old German Shepherd was right by my thigh for heel, and was looking at me ready to play when I said break! Absolutely wonderful tuneup everybody should do it! Thank you for the knowledge!

    One really great tip on this clip......there is a huge difference between "bribing" good behavior with food and "paying" for good behavior. The former only gets good behavior when food is offered.

    Another great video, desensitization is an amazing tool for fearful dogs.
    I have a dog which is one of the most fearful dogs you'll ever meet. Terrified of anything new. So scared of anything new that if you put a towel in the hallway she won't cross to the other side because she's afraid to step on it. So scared that if I buy a new car, it will take forever to get her in it. None of her litter mates are like this considering they were all raised up to 8 weeks together in a pretty good environment. My guess is it's genetic, most likely the case with the dog in the video as well.
    As she is afraid of everything she was also terrified of new people and dogs. This was unacceptable to me because she was going to grow into a 130lbs Kangal shepherd. If she became an adult and was still fearful of dogs and people, it would be a disaster waiting to happen.
    So what I did was go on a desensitization marathon from 9weeks old to about 10 months old. Everyday, sometimes twice a day having her around boatloads of people and as many dogs as possible.
    Fast forward to my dog at 2 years old. She is still a terrified dog, anything new scares the daylights out of her(like a new car). However she has zero fear of people and zero fear of dogs. She is so good with dogs that neighbors bring their dogs to my house to socialize their own dogs in a safe way because my dog is so good around other dogs.
    The point is desensitizing a dog to what ever they fear works, it works like a charm. Go slow at first, don't just throw a scare dog into a pack of 20 dogs at a dog park. But while working slow you have to up the pressure every week. Eventually they don't just get over what they were scared of, they learn to love it.

      I have a dog like you described. I have been give her 2 15 min walks a day since the last 8 months, but her fear of people has not improved. And we have a lot of stray dogs in my building and she is always highly focused on them, she attacks them and has built up enmity with almost all stray dogs. I can't let her off the leash as she straight away goes to fight other dogs( sometimes takes on 2 at a time). At home she is darling but she is of fearful aggressive type. Sometimes she bites me (without drawing blood) when I am standing over near her corner.
      I don't know what to do. Can't afford a dog trainer.

    Such a beautiful pup ☺️
    Do you have any recommendations for overly friendly and excited dogs? My 6 month old pup has made lots of progress with general training, however we're struggling with her manners when greeting people. She is just a little ball of excitement and anticipation, and no amount of correction or even treats can redirect her attention and bring her focus back to whomever is with her, until there is a decent amount of distance between us.
    Finding it really hard as I love that she's so friendly, but she needs to learn to approach them only if the person is accepting and in a much less frantic way...

    • @anrmg
      @anrmg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have exactly the same problem. My puppy is also 6 months old and she gets excited (wags her tail) as we simply pass by people, and greets people with a lot of excitement when she's close (jumps, and no body control). What I read is that a dog greets people the way you allow your dog to greet you. If you can into the house and you excite her and let her jump on you, you are saying that she can greet other people and dogs the same way. I'm currently working on separation anxiety so I don't come across a lot of excitement when I come in through the door, just relief from her side and she immediately lays down, as in, "finally, I'm so tired", but will definitely be trying this more when she's more advanced in her training. I have however never excited my dog when coming into the house and always ignore her when she jumps, so maybe I'll have to try something different. If you are able to, have the people she greets turn around the moment she starts jumping on them, showing your dog that this is not appreciated. I find this very difficult to do because they all want to greet my puppy and it's always too late. Hope this helps.

    • @williamdavis9562
      @williamdavis9562 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@anrmg Nice post, I agree 100% that how you allow your dog to greet you when you come home because the dog's default method of greeting humans the dog meets.
      My dog also had a jumping problem when I came home, I basically fixed that by extending my knee out when she jumped. My knee slamming into her chest was uncomfortable to say the least but it taught her really quickly that jumping on humans is not acceptable. I know what I did sounds harsh but it's better than having a 130lbs monster jumping on strangers lol

  • @dogmumma10

    One thing that I think people should be reminded of when they go to adopt a dog from a rescue organisation, especially if they're not experienced with dogs, - actually, and anyone really, is of the calm, assertive manner to be projected ALL THE TIME. Often people don't understand why they need to be this way, and it seems that's when the dogs start to test boundaries and get away with poor behaviour that isn't corrected and can get worse leading to the dogs being dumped or surrendered.

    I believe my 6 month old puppy is quite anxious when we go out because she pulls and is in general a hoover. She's constantly looking for rabbit excrement (they are common in this area and every dog there loves it) and sniffing and moving from side to side. She has never walked heads up for longer than 5 seconds when she walks on grass unless she's playing with other dogs which she loves. We will call her (she's usually off leash on the grass) and she will come most of the times, although sometimes with a few seconds delay if she prefers to finish whatever she's doing. It's quite frustrating. I've got a slip lead that I bought two days ago and have tried many tactics: popping, though not enough for her to come the first time, and redirecting her, praising her... The first 5 minutes would be brilliant but as soon as a dog barked and she didnt know where it was coming from, as soon as my partner would come into the picture, she would get excited and would not want to walk away from her and she would not be able to concentrate at all, she would even be on two feet as I pulled her and popped her because she was so alert. I'm not sure what to do. She is extremely food motivated and she will do anything for it meaning when I call her, I never know if she comes because she's obedient or because she knows a treat's coming up. We always bring treats when we go out for walks so if she heels she will get a treat (she will do constant eye contact, one day she will walk into a tree) and leaves as soon as she gets them for a few minutes until she wants some more. For weeks I have stopped whenever she has pulled and not moved forward until she stops pulling but tbh either the message is being conveyed really slowly or is just not powerful enough. I believe she grabs things because she's super anxious because it's just not normal! Any tips on anything I've mentioned?

    We have a rescue dog we have had for just over a month now and he has some pretty significant fear based aggression towards men and most dogs (and busses that drive past?). We keep him muzzled when out but he gets so worked up he chokes himself out on the slip. Would the boot camp course help us with this?

  • @winter7401
    @winter7401 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My housemate recently got a 5mo old GSD who has hardly left the home until coming to live with us. She is extremely skittish and anxious and will pull with all her might if we're out and she decides she doesn't like things. She's afraid of noises, buildings, even the occasional box in the home and I've really struggled with the engagement aspect of training. It has quickly devolved to the point that even going out to the toilet is a monumental task, and she is mostly going to the toilet indoors; we've tried the usual stuff when it comes to toilet training but taking her outside and planting our feet firmly until she goes isn't an option when she's fighting for her life to get back inside. Directional training doesn't seem to help if she's dragging herself in the direction of home, we'd just be dragging her back and forth. Do you have any advice?

    • @mauracassidy1762
      @mauracassidy1762 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would be helpful to have another calm dog to show your pup the ropes and that the garden and outside is not a scary place - and is the right place to toilet - dogs learn from other dogs - and are comforted by them. Perhaps there is a friend who has an older calm house trained dog who would be prepared to use their dog to work with you as a role model to give support and build confidence in your nervous young pup.

    Great video. But don't follow Joel Beckman's fault of quoting/saying "the proof is in the pudding" or similar. :o) It's "the proof of the pudding is in the eating" - you have got to eat the pudding to see what it is really like and like you have shown you have to observe the dog's behaviour after a tune up drill - which this video clearly shows - to see that the dog is happier, more relaxed (as you say: weight of the world off their shoulders), and better behaved. An owner will enjoy taking this dog for a walk and take the dog further and explore new places (towns, trails, and coffee shops for the human, and lots of new smells for the dog). Great video - just change the quote! Love it.

      I'm curious to the frequency of a 'tune-up'. I just know your dog needs you to be a calm, consistent leader each and every day. Everyone in the household and visitors have to sing from the same hymn sheet.

      Question
      I'm in need of some advice about this topic. PS: It's a lengthy comment.
      I know a couple who has a powerful and anxious Rottweiler. The original breeder bred the fearful dog for competition, it's intense. It also responds well, particularly to treats, however. The dog randomly charges, jumps towards strangers, growls, and appears intimidating to the point pedestrians gets visibly upset and retreats. Elderly, other dogs, and kids are prominent targets. One day, I'm sure that dog will get put down for this behaviour.
      When I've approached the couple and their son, their awareness of this issue exists. They've gone to a specialist, who believe the anxious dog is mild and easy and responsive, especially to strong leadership. The couple activly bribe the dog with treats to compensate, cuddle it to death at home, and possess zero leadership qualities. The three of them have their individual handling methods, without any uniting procedures of handling the dog.
      Their level of physical activity per day consists of a total 30 ish minutes walks, with a bit more on a weekend.
      They're intelligent people, with distinct careers, but in practice, they lack the will to lead nor the objectivity to recognize bad environmental patterns that might reinforce bad behaviour. Prioritisation of the dog, physically and mentally, to the level required is minimal at best, based on the speciality of the breeder and specialist's recommendations. They treat it as a lazy, couch loving labrador. "You see, the problem is the dog. We don't have the energy and time."
      -The couple.
      I see two potential solutions
      A.) They can't have this dog, because it doesn't match them. Both in terms of leadership and physical energy.
      B.) I'll take the dog for a couple of weeks. 3 hour physical activity a day in wilderness. I'll also drill the mental aspects several times a day. If the situation improve, perhaps that will show that the issue is not the fault of the dog.
      C.) Ignore the issue.

      My rescue tends to "regress" when she is moved from one place to another. When we first brought her home she regressed for about a week or two. When we had to move to the Residence Inn (due to a flood in our condo) she regressed to her original just out of the humane society bad behaviors) for about three weeks. Now that I know this, I no longer panic I know this will pass and I just keep up with our training and increase my own patience response since I now know this is temporary.

    What would you tell people who say:“ That’s just the attitude of my dog to be anxious and fearful of everything, thunderstorms or people or noises or whatever, there is nothing you can do about it“? Are they not just simply unable to lead their dogs with confidence and giving them security and calmness and showing them who is the leader? Let alone your body language shows the dog you are the rock it can rely on!

    Hello I adopted a puppy because the dog she lived with bit her several times the last time requiring a visit to the vet. I brought her home to my pack that basically are happy go luckies. she went up to them all and rolled over to show her belly. I did not think much of this. simply accepting her position at the bottom of the pack. But this behavior went on and goes on continually, As far as I can make out it is her way of greeting them, wanting to play with them, but she simply does this all the time. one of my dogs grew tired of it and growled at her but that did not stop her from staying there or returning. He would lunge and bite the air next to her cheek but this would not stop her. If i told him to behave himself even though he was lying silently not bothering anyone and she came to him, he would look at me as if saying tell her to stop bothering me. Now my other dogs have also reached the end of their patience and are also growling at her. Nothing seems to stop this behavior and I do not have a clue what to do. When I see her doing it I call her off, hopefully distracting her, but eventually she goes back to bothering one of them. This my friend tells me is why her dog bit her beause she would not stop postrating herself infront of him. She, UHU is presently 6 months old and I desperately need to find an answer to this and how to put an end to behavior before one of my dogs bites her. Please help !!!!!!!!!! thank you.

    I don’t see how that would work with a toy dog who is fearful and not used to a leash yet ☹️one soft yank and she would scream

    She wants to learn. you won't need treats in a few minutes.

    The dog is just afraid of physical punishment (slip lead) and tries to calm you down (wagging tail and contact). The problem is you will always have to rely on slip lead for her to follow and there will not be an incentive for her once off lead. You jerking the lead is just plain painful. It is also dangerous if the dog is truly fearful as it can damage her throat.

    Over 3 minutes into your 12 minute video and you still haven’t gotten to the point.

      I adopted a 6yo small dog about 2years ago. She is a wonderful dog but very fearful. It has been lots of work to get her to not be so fearfully. But we'll worth it. Perhaps you could find someone who will take her in OR help train.
