    Played guitar for YEARS...never learned the notes on the fretboard. Just enjoyed playing but always felt (knew) that I missing a BIG part in my playing advancement. Learned the piano by studying music theory (just the basics)...so this video was a HUGE encouragement!! A few BASIC scales (A, C, D, etc) and a run-through concerning fretboard note locations/ familiarization would be EXTREMELY helpful. THANKS! I always enjoy your videos!

    For a long time I played in bands only knowing cowboy chords, barres, and little riffs that turned out to be triads. I knew the low E and A strings for chord roots.
    I started by playing both your 5 minute practice every day, usually for 20 minutes. I learned the Fretboard decoder. All the topics in today's video are addressed in those lessons. Just applying that to what I already knew has made a world of difference in a year and a half. Thanks! I'm working on it.

    There are no shortcuts, unless you're born a musical savant, and even then the physical attributes required to play technically are a learning process that takes time. I picked up the guitar at 12 and have never looked back. I'm 54 now and was always a sporadic practicer and as a result I was never able to achieve what inspired me. Now with all the time to spend playing 2 to 4 hrs a day I find I can do pretty much whatever I want to technically, and I'm pairing that with the theory I started learning in school. Robert, thank you for your videos and generosity as I have learned considerably from them, for nothing. TH-cam is doing you right by the looks of your collection lol. You deserve it.

    Come on don't ever apologize about your intros. Or anything you play. We are mostly lesser guitar players compared to you. Most of the stuff we come up with is probably not so good and/or unoriginal. And every once in a while we come up with something that really feels great, then we forget it. Putting these little bits in the intros is just the right place for them. Of course not all of them will be the same amount of legendarity.

      It's because it's TH-cam It's a one-sided conversation where you're hoping he's going to talk about something that's hindering you but it either never happens or it's always in the program you need to pay for and then if you pay most of the time it won't be in there either.
      I've struggled with chords up to the point where I'm just about to give up and go bsck to DJing because I can't find anyone here that can teach you how to do chords without an augmented trimester diminished 5th sustained third octave of the ninth integer and I'm yet to find that string or fret.

    • @minkorrh
      @minkorrh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was always envious of that. I switched to jazz picks that are really pointy and overnight my playing changed. Alternate picking became second nature and almost a joke to perform at speed. There is a lot more plastic to drag across a string with a rounded edge pick as opposed to a pointy jazz pick. I use the Dava red/black picks about 1.5mm thick.

      When I took German in high school, I was immediately struck by how similar it was to English, but I was the only one in the class (besides the teacher) who heard Elizabethan English in it. Thee, as in "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day", came from Sie, meaning You. Thou shalt = Du sollst (You will). Since then, people who are fluent in other languages have told me the same thing. So have people who play two or more instruments. Legendary trans actress & musician Calpernia Addams plays more than a dozen. She started playing the violin at such a young age, she doesn't even remember when she did. I imagine she must have theory screwed down air-tight.

    I would say learning notes on guitar is crucial. Just because it's fun. You play i,VI vII, strum the Am, F and then instead of G chord you play note. and you connect, not even on theory level. that G chords take name from the first note. so you can play it anywhere on the neck.

    • @braydonguitar649
      @braydonguitar649 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would use octave and intervals to slowly piece the fretboard together, don't worry too much about being able to memorize every note, just memorize notes that you can use as reference notes to others and the muscle memory and memorization will kick in, memorize notes on the the E string is the best and from their piece the octaves together and than major 3rds and 5ths, and minor 3rds and 5ths, and keep going off intervals such as that, thats what worked for me, good luck :)

    • @simmonphoenix3206
      @simmonphoenix3206 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Another thing that helped me is to know the fret board repeats over and over infinitely. So learn frets 1-12. Then it repeats 12-24.

    • @tolvajakos
      @tolvajakos 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, it will probably take some time. I find it to be a circular thing, where I try to memorize the notes but without much other knowledge. Then learn other stuff, chords and scales, whatever, come back to memorizing notes again, now they stick better, then learn more stuff, then again actually concentrate on knowing the notes, and slowly but surely it will come. Don't get stuck on it. Learn other things, learn songs, don't worry about it too much. Revisit it every once in a while and you will get there.

  • @brent_s

    Can you do a video on how to determine what pentatonic box to use based on on where the note is on the fretboard. How you knew to use box 1 when you played the 12 fret on the low E is where I get confused.

    • @sierraridgereaper
      @sierraridgereaper 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you know box 1, it can be used at any point on the neck. He chose fret 12 because he knew the key was E (the open E chord he used). E is the 6th string open, the same E repeats at the 12th fret, one octave higher. He could have used box 1 in the open position too, he just went to the easiest or next logical spot, the 12th.. hope that makes sense.

    • @deanharris6398
      @deanharris6398 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The key to this is knowing where the root notes are in each box. You will see that box 1 has a root on the low E, that's how Robert knew to use that box.

  • @alabamahebrew
    @alabamahebrew 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Well, now I am confused again... Lol, no seriously this was a cool video, ugh so many ways to learn stuff lol. Do you know how difficult it is to try and memorize this stuff after you reach 50 year? lol.. now I am 55 and it isn't easier let me tell you that much. I play along to backing tracks of various genre's and I printed out the Pentatonic scales and have them taped to the wall in front of me so I can look at them while playing along to whatever it is I am playing along with. This has helped to learn the note placements on the fret board as well as to somewhat memorize some scales. But what's really fun is to play like 7 or 8 backing tracks that are all in like Bm and AMaj then suddenly hit one that's in A minor or D minor and then remember that 's it OK to play a g now lol. A few years ago I had come to the conclusion that I am a rhythm player and not a soloist, but as my playing has improved I have ventured into the solo territory. I am not a fast guitar player, due to hand issue, but I can play "OK" . I love the backing tracks because I am making the solo's up as I go along, so I am never wrong lol.

      @@mikefrighetto5368 Hello fellow almost a boomer lol. I missed being a boomer by one year but these youngsters insist on calling me one anyway lol. Yeah man, trying to do it now at this age and with these memories is tough huh? I really learn a lot from Robert, more than anyone else on YT and that's no lie! Sometimes it's nothing more than watching how he is picking a part or palm muting or just whatever ya know? I would watch my step dad play his GORGEOUS Gibson Hummingbird to groups like the Ventures or to some country song and it would just memorize me, but as I said in my original post, I was never able to take it seriously until I turned 48/49 and my kids were grown and I was making decent enough money I could finally afford the guitars I wanted. I've been playing guitar for 2.5 years and have solid basics but want to become a master player and learn 100 new metal songs end to end and techniques like sweep picking arpeggios and difficult songs and solos. I had a teacher who kept rehashing the same lesson of diatonic sequence scalar patterns and would not teach me new riffs, songs or licks.

    • @nehemiahzo_

      Renaissance Man sweep picking is hard to tackle. I’m still learning. Tapping arpeggios are pretty simple when you get the hang of it. If you use the side of your pick to tap the right hand note, it should be louder. Boost your gain, use a compressor and delay if you need to.

It has definitely made me put the guitar up for weeks at a time thinking im stuck as more of a dj, and that makes me wanna give up on music. That BS was cool as a kid but not so much at 40...

      I know most of my Pentatonix shapes but I got no clue where these twos and fours are! except the second fret in the fourth fret there's a 2 and a 4 there.
      Everything is a 5th, 4th or a 7th suspended 19th to 9/16 or 3/32 1/2 inch and 10 mm.
      all these quarters 8 and 16th I don't know if I'm playing an instrument or buying drugs... lol

    I hate theory. Its the most difficult thing for me. Every time i think i understand something,someone comes along and explains it differently, and then im lost again. For me,its always two steps forward, three steps back. Ugh. Frustrating.

      I know that feeling, it took me many years before I understood some of the things. My tip is find a real teacher that can explain things so you understand, then listen only to that person. The person has to be able to explain things with simple words.
      If you can't afford private lessons, look around TH-cam try to find someone that teach from beginner to advanced. Just watch some beginner videos without touching your guitar, ask yourself do I understand what this person is talking about. Then take it step by step, don't rush, watch the same video again if you have to

    When I met my guitar teacher, I said to him: "F*ck theory, teach me how to set my fingers so I can play the songs I like most". It was so difficult that after some months I said to him: "OK then, lets start learning to play the guitar so I can play any song I want". It was so slowly and boring trying to memorize everything that months later I said to him: "I think the correct way to do it it's learning to play the guitar with my ears, so I can play whatever I've got in my head". A year and a half after I first met my teacher, here I am TRYING. And having fun.
