- Mariam Abeje grew up immersed in two languages and cultures, living in the United States and Ethiopia and speaking both English and Amharic. She has observed that as she uses both languages, it is not just the way she speaks that changes, but that her whole personality feels different. What’s more, from talking to family and friends, she has learned that the same experience might be common to others who are bilingual. Mariam will share her own story and insights she has gained from her cultural confluence. Mariam Abeje is an Austin College senior from Murphy, Texas. She is majoring in Healthcare Administration with a minor in Chemistry, and will pursue a career in medicine. Beyond Austin College, Mariam works with MarNat: One Child at a Time, an organization she and her family founded to provide school uniforms, shoes, backpacks, and school supplies for underprivileged children in Ethiopia. She is passionate about helping underserved communities and bringing opportunities to people who can help make a difference in those communities. What a talk! This goes to show how it is to be the younger brother of an overachiever like Mariam. She has always exceeded any boundary set for her and continues to amaze me. Although it may be hard to even come close to shining like her, she has done nothing but be my biggest motivator. Shoutout soon to be Dr. Abeje!

Mariam, we are proud of you for representing different diaspora communities who are in similar situation. I know growing up in two different environments or culture has its own benefits and challenges, especially for our kids. But we all have to be critical messaging that may make you feel like a misfit, because you are different. Always, we have to find points of pride in our heritage and identity. Achamelesh, and Abeje, thank you for allowing Mariam share the story. Mariam, thank you for representing all of us and be a voice for so many.

This young lady has a smart brain but most importantly a very tender heart for others. I am beyond proud of her hard word and dedication and the awareness this speech brings to many. Born to lead -keep shining champ.
The first time i met Mariam Abeje was when she was a fifth grade student. She was shy, intelligent, and very responsible student in the class. It was just a pleasure to have her in class.
Then i wouldn't take that much time to know her mother, Achamyelesh, we call her Achu, because she used to be around her children whether they are in the school or away from their school for educational or other activities. Actually no teachers can forget Achu's Christmas present too😃. Her mother, Achu, is simply a munificent woman, or a local philanthropist that entertains life by succouring the have-nots.
By observing Mariam's character in class, one can simply tell the type of family she came from. My relationship with Mariam didn't stop as a science teacher at GCS, i had been her home tutor too till she left Ethiopia. That gave me an immense opportunity to know her big family that most of us wish to have. Her speech, here, is also telling how much she attached with her family. Once you know the family's values and norms , Mariam wouldn't be a surprise for anyone. Grew up in Sunday school, raised in benevolence and philanthropy, Mariam wouldn't be different from who she is now. Having that curiosity of knowledge and self discipline, it will not be a surprise to see Mariam at the highest rung of academic ladder in the near future.
I certain you will come back Ethiopia to support your people again in everything you can after accomplishing your studies in U.S.

When training as a psychologist there was a patient who had split personality syndrome but it was very odd as his natural language was poor English, but his other personality was German speaking and to a high level. At school he was learning French but no German he dropped French as he was so bad at other languages according to the school and his parents. I've yet to meet another person with a split personality, whose other personality spoke a foreign language.
❤❤❤❤❤❤ Thank you for this video❤❤❤❤❤ I am now bilingual in English and self taught myself Japanese at the age of 17… I can totally relate too being born from a German mother and American father…I was born a tiny infant and was adopted into an American family and was raised mostly speaking English (which to this day I hate speaking it…) I was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 17…American English always racks my brain and am forced to speak it all the day…everyday…I have been bilingual since I self taught myself Japanese and am now wanting to learn Korean and Spanish❤❤❤❤❤❤ I am quiet and shy in English yet am excited and hyper while speaking Japanese❤❤❤❤ I am a linguistic geeky gal!!❤❤❤
