  • Need to configure a router to work with Verizon 5G Home Internet? Here's how I setup the ASK-NCQ1338 gateway to work with my Asus Aimesh system (main router is a RT-AC88U). The newer ARC-XCI55AX cube gateway is very similar to setup but the interface is different. I discuss how to setup DHCP server, DMZ, IP passthrough, static IP address, firewall, etc to get it to work together the most robust way.

    OMG - this video is GOLD. I got Verizon Home LTE about 6-8 weeks ago and immediately connected it to my existing network using passthrough. It worked okay, but I had off and on connectivity issues and even worse - DNS issues. While browsing on my Apple computers, I would get frequent DNS (sites not loading or not found) issues. It was driving me crazy. After following Nater Tater's advice, my internet is now working great. Thank you! BTW - I have an "ASK" device. So the UI was different. But I eventually figured out how to turn off DHCP after reseting the router from passthrough mode.

    Just wanted to say that your are an absolute goat for this. Only video I found with valid information on the pass through issue as well as 3rd party router speed issue. My RT-AX82U now works seamlessly for heavy task like gaming and streaming with no hitches. Verizon should make this public knowledge but Im happy you did. Cheers🤙🏽

    I would like to add that I noticed with the ASKEY Verizon cube that it does get very warm with the WIFI on, but also the cellular radio adds to that heat. I noticed when these boxes get a bit too warm it will cause them to reset or glitch out. This is why I want to well basically do what you did and have a secondary router handle all of the processing. I will follow some of the steps from your video, thank you for posting this for people with the ASKEY verizon cube.

    I'm using Verizon Home Internet with an ASUS AI Mesh system. Something I did was a ping test to determine optimal MTU Size. Anything over 1428 and my packets were fragmented, so I set my WAN MTU setting (Merlin Software) of my ASUS to 1428 and things are running very quick & smooth

    So thanks!
    Question, if I want to use the same Asus router and Verizon 5g internet gateway as shown in the video, how do I set it up so I can use the Verizon 5g gateway as a wifi router for the house and the Asus for my garage 100ft away. I have cat6 between the two locations.
    Thanks in advance for any information you can pass on.

    • @NaterTater
      @NaterTater  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You could do that but I'd suggest getting a 2nd Asus router instead and run a AiMesh setup that would allow seamless wifi switching for your devices. Meaning they would connect to the house or barn automatically and switch back and forth based on which has better signal. Here's how you'd add a router to your barn after following this video to add the first Asus. th-cam.com/video/5kse94JM0IA/w-d-xo.html

    The web interface for the Verizon 5G Home Internet has apparently changed since you did this video. I set my Netgear router up with the Verizon gateway over a year ago using your video and it has worked flawlessly. I was getting the same speeds connecting to my Netgear router as I was getting connnecting to the Verizon gateway until recently. Now, I am only getting about 30-50 Mbps whether connecting wirelessly or with Ethernet connected to my Netgear router. I have an Apple TV connected by Ethernet directly to the Verizon gateway and it gets speeds of 200-300 Mbps. I have a second Apple TV connected by Ethernet with the Netgear router and it now only gets 30-50 Mbps. It used to get 200-300Mbps. I have tried using the other LAN connector on the Verizon gateway but that didn’t help. I also connected a Linksys router just to be sure it wasn’t a problem with the Netgear router but that didn’t help either. I’m bumfuddled!

I went into the Advance Settings on the Verizon Gateway and attempted to set up Port Forwarding but had no success. I input my DVR iPv4 address for Port 80, Port 8000, and Port 8554 but it didn't work. Any suggestion?
    I was wondering if I buy a router and connect it into the Verizon Gateway, then plug my Ethernet cable for my LTS Security System into the new router, can I then go into the router and set the Port Forwarding up in the router bypassing the Verizon Gateway. Your thoughts?

    I have your same router and Verizon gateway. In addition I have a QNAP NAS and have not been able to get OpenVPN to work, thinking my issue is the Verizon gateway not forwarding my port. Appears to be blocked. Sounds like if I follow your Passthrough recommendation it will work. Do I need any additional firewalls other than the ASUS and QNAP to protect my device? I'm thinking VPN with Port Forward of an unusual port and very strong passwords will do. By the way, this is by far the best instructional video I've seen, and I've watched lots of them. Thanks you! • @NaterTater
      @NaterTater  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      wow, I had a QNAP NAS prior too! I'm now NAS-less though. Your ASUS and QNAP have firewall features so I'd just make sure those are active an you should be good to go! You might try just the Verizon DMZ setting to your ASUS and then let your ASUS do the port forwarding. If that doesn't work then go the full IP passthrough mode on the verizon gateway. The reason being is once you do IP Passthrough on the verizon it makes it a little more difficult to manage the verizon settings (it's IP will be one digit higher than your ASUS's WAN IP).

    Strange thing though. I have A PBS Passport account which should allow me to watch local PBS programming in central Illinois. Ever since I hooked up the Verizon gateway, the app thinks I'm in Chicago which is 150 miles away. Because of this, I can't watch local PBS programming. Not using a VPN. Unfortunately there arent settings to fix that. Its due to the fact that you exit the verizon network in Chicago thst PBS thinks you are located there. PBS can't "see" inside the verizon network to know where you are physically located. You can try contacting PBS and see if they can force a location. VPN can also work if there is one with a local server/host.

    Nate, I own or use the gateway from T-mobile, which you helped me use the script some months ago to take the wifi off. The problem I am having with that gateway is it doesn't play well with my router as a backup WAN. It's probably because of the lack of control the user has over the gateway with it being double NAT configured with my mesh router behind it. Does this ASK-NCQ1338 work ok as a backup WAN for you or are you just using it as a primary WAN? Yes thats not uncommon with cellular internet. Its where your connection exits the Verizon network and to "the internet". One way you can change it is using a VPN with a server nearby (hopefully one close enough for your streaming services). Another option is calling the streaming service and explaining the issue.

    Good Afternoon Nater Tater, I really appreciate your content. The 5g set up was such a big help.I had a question regarding the the pass-through to my router.Its a linksys MR7300 series, wifi 6. I have noticed that I showed connection, I get download speeds, but almost half of what the verizon receiver is showing when I check speeds on my router. Although sometimes the verizon app cannot show what my speeds are from the tower. There are times where load times take a bit longer on my desktop. My biggest concern would be devices not working properly, such as my IOT devices ( alexa home, wyze hub, wifi on my portable devices). They connect, but in the case of the IOT devices, they wont function properly, always cutting out or saying no internet. My Ethernet connection is stable. There was a 3 week period recently where everything worked with no issues. The this past week right back to issues I stated earlier. Hope you had a safe and happy holiday. Any help would be appreciated.

      you'll need your Asus router to have DHCP on then (it is by default) so there's something assigning IP address to devices on your network. You can set the Asus wifi SSID and password to the same as the current Verizon gateway if you wanted (and turn off wifi on the verizon gateway). Then all your devices would automatically connect to the Asus without changing settings.

    Nate, I just came across your channel looking for info on this topic - great video. I have a couple devices (e.g., a solar inverter that works better hardwired than using wifi to send monitoring data) hardwired to the gateway I'm replacing with the Verizon 5G gateway. I'm putting a Google Nest mesh router in front of the Vz gateway. Since I want to connect 2 hardwired devices plus my router, I plan to attach my router to one port on the Vz gatway and an enet switch to the other port for the hardwired devices. If I turn DHCP off on the Vz gatway, will it cause a problem for the hardwired device that won't be connected to my router and its DHCP? If so, can I leave passthrough off and DHCP on and DMZ on in the Vz router and have both the hardwired devices and my Nest router connected devices work properly? I would basically not be making the changes you suggested except turning the Vz wifi off. If this will work, I will check the speed to see if I'm having the degredation from dual DHCP you described. I may be able to live with the reduced speed, depending on what speed 5G provides. Thanks again for the detailed video.

    • @NaterTater
      @NaterTater  ปีที่แล้ว

      why not connect your inverter to the nest mesh via ethernet? if you turn off dhcp on the vzw gateway you'll need to manually assign an IP to your inverter (which may not be an options in its configuration). if you turn on ip passthrough on the vzw gateway then only LAN2 will work, LAN1 will be inactive.

    • @AlanG-sj4ri
      @AlanG-sj4ri ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NaterTater I'd rather connect the inverter to the vz gateway rather than to the port on the mesh router so that it isn't on the mesh router network. My logic is (correct me if I'm wrong) that if the inverter's traffic is going directly to the gateway, my router's security will protect my PCs and other network devices from any bad actors that manage to compromise the inverter. Since I don't have confidence that SolarEdge is upgrading software on the inverter for security issues I'd rather keep it off of the network with my PCs and data. All the inverter needs is internet access to send data to their monitoring cloud. I don't need it on the same network. If I could connect the inverter via wifi, I'd just put it on the guest network on my router for isolation, but that isn't an option on the inverter.
      Apart from possible speed degredation from two DHCP layers, does it sound like the configuration will work with passthrough off and dhcp off on the Vz gateway? If so, I will hook it up and give it a shot. I am set up this way with my current AT&T Uverse gateway. I'd have to verify, but I think it has DHCP and I know wifi is turned off on the ATT gateway.

    Hey Nate have a question maybe you can help me with. Also enjoy your videos. I have a ring alarm system in my home which is very small less than 1500sq. Ft and I want to upgrade to their ring alarm pro which has a built in eero router. But I don’t want to use the built in eero router because my router handles everything I have plus with no problems. So I’m thinking of putting the eero router to bridge mode. Do you see anything wrong with this also I’m not very savvy when it comes to this but any advice would help. Thanks

      I fully get the "if it aint broke dont fix it". However I would try renaming the ring alarm pro wifi network to the same as your current wifi and turn off your current wifi router. All your devices should automatically connect to the ring alarm pro wifi. If you dont want to or that doesnt work then yes bridge mode should work. th-cam.com/video/z-v6PajM4Js/w-d-xo.html

    We have the ASK-NCQ1338E; I bought a static address from Verizon, which
    I need because we tunnel between sites. I added the static address to the LAN;
    turned off DHCP. Does the WAN output from LAN2 go straight into the WAN input
    on my external router, or do I have to do something else? When I put the WAN cable from
    LAN2 on the Verizon Gateway directly into the WAN my router, I get no internet.
    Is the WAN address coming out of the Verizon Gateway, the static address, or something else.
    Thanx!

    Thank you for posting this video. I have a question. I just got Verizon 5G Home Internet and received the Gateway Model WNC-CR200A. I have an Asus AX5400 and before I hooked it up, using the instructions provided by Verizon, I was getting around 300mbps wirelessly. Once I completed the steps and enabled IP Passthrough and hooked up my router, my speeds dropped to 75mbps and I just checked again and they are up to 175mbps, so almost 1/2 of the speeds without the router.
    Once I enabled IP Passthrough I noticed the bars on the Gateway go from 2 to 1. I'm wondering if verizon does this to incentivise you to use their equipment only.
    I would like to get the speed back up to 300 so I will have to give these steps a try, unless you suggest something else, since this video was made a year ago.
    What would be your advise? I will wait for a replay before messing with it. I got to work anyway. Happy Holidays!

    @Nater Tater Thanks for the video. I just got my ASK version in the mail today and in probably a mediocre part of house I was getting 340 / 20 speeds and I barely get 200 - 220 from Spectrum about the same up. Currently I have a AirMesh Asus Zen wifi QoS tuned for streaming as Im cord cutter. House is large and 3 levels and the Cube won't cover me. I also have an older Asus RT-AC87R non mesh that is QoS tuned for gaming for my son. My cable modem has 2 ports on it so It actually works great as a setup. Each router has it's own SSID.
    I notice the VZ Cube has two ports on it as well. I have two different IP's for each router and what pitfalls will I have. The air mesh really needs to keep the IP series I have because of two items with static IP's The RT really can be any IP series. What pitfalls in setting this up will I encounter. I want DHCP to be handled on the two network routers I already have.
