Lomography Did The UNTHINKABLE

  • If you hadn't heard the news, Lomography lowered prices on their entire range of 120 medium format analog film! In an economy where literally everything is becoming more expensive, Lomography has bucked that trend and actually started lowering prices on some of their film photography products.
They sent me a couple of rolls and in this video I had the opportunity to shoot a roll of Lomography Lomocolor 120 film. I shot the images on my trusty Mamiya 645 medium format film camera.

Lomo is the realest. Always supporting creators and photographers. Pushing out new products for a variety of skill ranges.

Except they charge about 10x the price of the one decent camera they sell, the Lubitel 166 TLR.

Two thumbs up from north of the border for venturing out in proper cold. 👍👍 The crunch of that snow is all I need to hear to appreciate that it was a wee bit chilly that day. 😁 Check out Helmcken Falls in BC for quality winter waterfall action. Beautiful tall falls that builds a cone of ice up from the bottom over winter. When I taught in nearby Kamloops, I used to get out to that park as often as I could for a mental reset.
Great to hear Lomography is helping make film more accessible, and doing so ethically.

Lomo 800 is one of my favorite films. Also Lomography community is the best and the company always supports creators. 🙌

lol it's not "ethical", they're just trying to steal market share from competitors, thinking they've gone too far beyond market clearing price. This is 100% bean counters counting beans and estimating that the new price will yield a few more beans.

Oh, don't worry, we've busted the climate pretty good at this point. You'll be seeing lots of crazy weather moving forward. We had 70F here in Michigan In February this year. It's a weird situation - being excited for nice weather while at the same time feeling a sense of dread that it shouldn't be nice weather...
Those relatively compact 645 SLRs are amazing. I've shot most of the Mamiyas, old to new, even the AFD. I still have a 645E I need to sell. In the end I found the viewfinder superior on the Bronica ETRSi, especially after fitting it with an Olsen screen. The prism finder with both a spot and center meter is excellent as well.
My only issue with Lomo 120 is loose rolls. It works fine in my ETRSi and C220, but in both my GW680 and Fujica Super Six I get loose rolls. I thought it was just bad loading, but I've come to realize it's something about the film, since it's never been an issue with any other brand.

If going in warmer weather, you want a few days without rain in the area beforehand so the water is pretty and clear! If it has rained, the falls will be chocolate milk.
      Thanks!

I predict a stoppage in price hike or at least a moratorium on them. Reason: Brands like Harman/Ilford, ORWO/Wolfen or Adox have entered the market with their fully own produced color film. They aren't cheaper than the cheapest Kodak film, but at least their monopoly gets shaken up a little if people decide not to buy Kodak all the time when it comes to color film. Of course it takes time but I hope they have the endurance.
You mentioned Fuji raising prices. DOes Fuji still sell in the US? I basically don't get any new Fuji films in Europe right now.

What an awesome video! I've not yet shot any Lomography film but I'm going to have to give it a try based on this. As it turns out, I've been trying to get a working Mamiya 645 since December. My first eBay attempt ended up going back. My second local purchase seemed to work just fine until I screwed in a cable release. I've got 3 rolls of Gold 200 waiting to go once I get the camera back. BTW - I also love me shots of water going from high-up to down-low (AND I have a niece with a new baby in KY that I need to go visit, so those falls of yours could be on my bucket list). Thanks!!

I'm from Wisconsin and I say you're allowed to call anything below 0 "cold" without getting harassed by northerners. It's cold.
Nice of them to lower prices this soon after I got a Yashicamat though, maybe I'll have to buy some.

Lomography has had an out-sized influence on film photography, and hopefully lowering prices will cause other manufacturers to reduce prices.
I am also hoping that the introduction of their new 110 camera will be a hit causing other manufacturers to start making 110 film again. Would love a 400 speed black and white, Portra or Phoenix in 110.

the weird lines are light leaks. Im fighting the same issue with my 645. I replaced the seals and i added gaffers tape on the back. Waiting on developing to see the results.

The standard Lomo Color films are 100% Kodak Gold stock repacked but who cares? They always seem to work and Kodak does not sell Gold 100 and 800 (400 is technically Ultra Max but this is only in 35mm). Missing however the days where you could get a 3-pack for 15€ :/. I am doing less experimental stuff the last couple of years…

I dont think lomo 400 is ultramax. It’s Kodak for sure but I did a comparison test with the same scanner, same lens, two FM bodies, at the same lab and the lomo film was different.

@@LaskyLabs yeah. But they are all basically minor tweaks from the same basis for different markets. Back in the old days, Kodak even had a special formula of Gold for the central European market.

I like Lomography, I own their 4x5 instax back that I use occasionally with my Toyo 45G , which works great and is a ton of fun, I have the Digitaliza negative holder/feeder thing and it works great for 35mm and is a bargain compared to overpriced stuff from Negative Supply, and I am waiting on my new metal version of their 110 camera to arrive in a few days.

I have a few old Lomo 800 120 rolls in my fridge. I was considering picking up some more with the price drop. Have they fixed the issue with the fat rolls? I don’t know if it’s the Lomo spools or the backing paper, but I consistently get fat rolls where the film doesn’t tightly wind onto the taking spool no matter what camera I use.

  • @c.augustin
    @c.augustin 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hmm, are these stripes at the same position on all negatives? Since they run perpendicular to the length of the film on 6x4.5, they might be some type of light leak. Or a scan problem?

    • @Overexposed1
      @Overexposed1  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

If one needed one more proof that Lomo is nothing alike a rebranding grifter company. I'm so glad some of analog companies out there are directed by passionnates (and also there is cinestill.)
By the way, 120 format is the only way I can truely appreciate lomochromes stocks personally. Il love kino in 35mm, but purple, metropolis, etc, always looked like grain soup to me. But in 120 the results can be gorgeous

Hey man, im not sure what happened but after your “The Dark Side of Zeiss” video, I’ve completely stopped seeing your videos pop up in my feed. I had to double check I was still subscribed to you. Out of curiousity I saw your view count has been down since as well. I would double check to see if you’ve been shadow banned or something on TH-cam. It seems like the algorithm isn’t wanting to push your stuff any more.
Just letting you know, love your videos, good luck and keep doing what you do!

    • @Overexposed1

I don’t think so, I just released two videos that didn’t do all that well. As painful as it is, people just don’t come here to watch me go out and shoot. Those videos just don’t do well on this channel for some reason. I think it’s because people come here for photography opinion, video essay type content. When I make those videos, views pop. Anything else does poorly.
The fall photography on Luminar video was a great video that I enjoyed making. But goodness, it was a tough project. Shooting. Developing. Recording the shooting. Scripting. Shooting the studio segment. Editing. Nobody watched the project.
Compare that to “new film manufacturer..” I opened a box, toured their website and made that video inside of a few hours. Interesting content gets clicks, and turns out walking around with a camera taking pictures isn’t that interesting.

@@Overexposed1 I can understand the frustration. I watch the majority of your videos and probably would have watched your most recent ones almost immediately had they been in my subscribed feed. For some reason they never even showed up! And I’ve heard of others having similar issues. Don’t chalk it up entirely to people not wanting to watch that particular content, there may be some other factors in play.
