@Dp Sullivan One of the main points of building a penthouse is for the view. If he wants a windowless structure, why not build it at ground level? Makes absolutely no sense. It also destroyed the look of the building adding the stucco & concrete.

My grandfather was the superintendent for the construction of the Glass Bank. I had no idea so many people were into its history until they decided to demolish it! It's a building that my family was always proud of pointing out to others (even after it was no longer all glass) because he was such a huge part of it. I'm glad he passed away in early 2004 before all of the hurricanes hit us, as I feel like he would have been gutted to see the devastation to it (although he was pretty pissed when Wolfe covered it in stucco and added his stupid penthouse). Thank you for making such a great video of this awesome building (and a piece of my grandfather's construction legacy)'s history. It hit me right in the feels (in a good way).

My grandparents actually re did the whole lent house plumbing for mr wolf. After his death and all the talk that was going around, my grandparents decided to share there time with working with him
That place was always such a landmark when I was growing up. I remember wondering what the views were like from the top floor when on the way to my mom's work, and now finding out that the top floor was windowless feels weird haha.

Why would you hide out in a prominent thin walled structure that you can't see out of on top of a tall building and be as conspicuous as an apple on top of someone's head? I'd rather hide out at the Hilton Cocoa Beach Oceanfront. I've stayed there a few times when I was doing work at KSC. They have a free glass of wine every day for happy hour and the beach right outside the back door with a nice boardwalk out over the water, and windows. Lori Wilson Park next door is a nice perk too that includes a boardwalk nature trail under the hammock dotted with educational flora and fauna panels along the way, a dog park, and the opportunity to steal the _I Dream of Jeannie Ln_ street sign identifying the name of the access road (but you wouldn't be the first by a long shot.) Yep, I'm all for hiding in plain sight!

I’m surprised you didn’t mention the cat. A lot of people in cocoa beach still loved the building and continuously hoped for it to be restored (me being one of them). After frank had passed and cocoa beach wanted to demolish the building people had found a cat that was living in the lowest part so they started protesting claiming it shouldn’t be demolished because of the cat. There was a whole Facebook group made for it.

Great job as always, I always wondered at what point the express elevator was added. This place really does have quite the story to it. Also the news report that mentioned the tunnel being the only way to enter the bedroom was completely wrong. It had a completely normal entrance, and the "tunnel" was actually just a side window looking into a sauna if I remember correctly. If you look at the pic you can see the reflections from the pane of glass that is there.

Yeah, sure.... Why? By 2014 he owed over $1 million according to the video. There's no "free lunch" and the court ruled as it had to under law. Also, the place was a fire-trap by then, and I wouldn't have wanted to risk my neck as a firefighter trying to get thru that mess to try and save some crazy old coot if and when a fire broke out.

Doctor Skipwith well to be fair, he was living in a really hazardous building. It was practically falling apart at the key structures, it was only a matter of time before the whole building collapsed naturally or in some hurricane.

Very well done . Im amazed at the amount of research you put into this. Really enjoyed it . I will never forget this place not only for the reasons you mentioned but also because it taught me I'm too old to deal with trespassing fines , court costs and community service hours. It started off as such a beautiful building, and the penthouse was bloody impressive itself, despite how it looked externally. Sad that it's gone, but you could tell there was no hope for it anymore...

I use to live in Cocoa Beach. Moved right before they fence the area off.
I worked at an Ace Hardware next to it when I was in HS, and a number of people there warn me about him. Like sometimes some of the people would park in that massive empty parking lot, or near it (which he didn't own). He would call the store, cops, and other things to complain. I've also heard it was a complete pain dealing with him. But I never dealt with him myself.
Funny thing is, my family was looking at renting out one of the floors when we got there for a house. But they said no since they wanted a business (I don't know if he was involved with that are not).
As far as the city. They use HOA (Home Owners) tactics to take over properties and sell it off or give it to their friends. One of the big reasons why I'm happy I'm not there. I worked at a vet when I was in college and late HS a few streets from there. One day the doctor was putting clear coat on the fence to protect it, and the city told him to stop and gave him a fine for not having a permit to paint his own fence (again with clear coat).
I know my family had a similar problem (that lived a quarter mile from the vet) with a number of things).
Anyways, what happens is the city keeps hitting the person with fines and won't give out work orders when they take over a property. This means they want your land or someone a friend of one of the leaders of Cocoa Beach wants the land. The city will find SOMETHING (like the wrong type of wood being used in this video). Then to change or fix that problem, you need to get or your contractors need to get a work order from the city. The city says no, but still says you need to fix these problems (so now it's your going to get another fine or some other possible problems by you illegally fixing the thing.) The amount you owe the city will get close or over the value of the land. This in return will force the person to declare bankruptcy. The city will buy or just take the land for almost nothing. Then give it to their friend, sell it to their friend for almost nothing, or sell it to a worker for almost nothing. So if you rubbed the right shoulders, you can buy a given land for $10k-30k when the real value of it is in the millions.
Then the person will sell it for millions, or do what they wanted to do with the land. Watch in a year or 2 if this won't happen.
From my understanding this is a common thing for areas around Cocoa Beach too. I've heard about people getting ding by a city worker saying they illegally did something, taking pic of it, but it turns out the city worker was doing a B&E to take the pictures to prove it. A few of these have been stopped when it was proven the person was breaking into the place to take the pictures of the problem to get evidence.
The part the person in this video didn't really say, but was kinda hinting at. A good number of companies wanted to buy parts or all of that building and redo it. That away they can put their business there. The problem here is the city wouldn't allow them to get the work orders to fix or redo the building. The city wanted that land that bad (I wouldn't doubt that land is worth in the good 3 or 4 million if not more).
But due to these shady tactics, and Obama getting rid of man space flight. Nearby towns seen 14% of their business dry up within the first bit. It got so bad you had people with a PHD applying to Mc D. Between all of that, Cocoa Beach went from a cop living on almost every street and with almost no problems. To a massive drug problem, prostitution problems, and drinking problems. Like after the cops couldn't afford living there bc there jobs were gone or they themselves had to deal with this shady stuff from the city. They had to move and that place had a flood of drugs move in fast. Regular DEA activity around.
(Not to bring of politics. But the crap job market, the massive amount of regulations, and shady stuff like I just talked about is a major reason why Trump got in office. But I think that city while it did everything by the book. It is corrupt as you can get legally. From my understanding, this is a common practice when it comes to HOA.)
I've been out of there since 2011 or 2012. From my understanding, it's much much much worst now than when I was last there. It's also the last time I will live in a city.
Oh and one thing that wasn't said in the video. That guy who killed himself. I forgot how long until they notice, but some time went by before someone notice he was dead.
Anyways, good job on the video. I never seen the pictures, and didn't know about some of the stuff in the video. In fact, I thought the building always looked like that.
BTW there is another bank near there that is abandon. I'm not sure if it's still there since I've been out of the area for so long, or if another company took it over. But Bank of America use to be near there. They closed down the bank due to lack of clients. This was some time after the job market went to crap, and a ton of people had to move. But I don't know if that caused that.
I doubt you can explore it without the cops being on you, but you might be able to get permission to if it isn't already pushed over or bought out by another company.

The whole state is like that from what I have heard online. I don't know if it's all true or not though. They seem to hand out fines like a Jehovah's witness hands out pamphlets.
Obama may have cut the space programme but the majority of what happened to that building is the problem of the City Council rather than the President. Now Trump's gotten into office on a promise to fix a problem he has no jurisdiction over because everyone blamed Obama but nobody looked to their local government.

All of this egged on by politicians and a partisan press who would happily lie in order keep the people blaming the wrong organisation ...then be genuinely surprised when people believed those lies and acted on them.

Well, he was probably a very worldly guy. Lots of money and he probably had lots of girls and parties there in the 80's. He made those choices. I see it all the time today. People didn't want commitment or marriage or children because they want to party. Those things don't last forever. Build up treasure in Heaven instead of earth. Commit to a spouse and raise children to be good citizens. Spending your life as a never ending party is going to end like it did for this poor soul.

That building was gorgeous in its initial design, but they just had to add shit to it as well as let parts of it decay due to floors being rented to different tenants. And that god awful penthouse at the top was the final straw, and now the thing is just gone. Such a damn pity.

You're actually right. I just made a detail comment on how this worked when I lived in Cocoa Beach. They are one of the most corrupt cities I know of that doesn't break laws. Like watch that land. Some friend of the city person was most likely already or going to be give or sold that land for almost nothing. Like it's normal business for them to take over a land, then sell it at $20k to a friend, then the land will sell at several million.
I have no doubt money is flowing around to help move things along, but it's all going to be legal.
But the place did look like crap. But as noted in the video, the city wouldn't give out work orders to allow people to work on the building.
Well, the building was causing some legitimate problems like asbestos and fire issues. Someone could've gotten seriously sick or hurt. I think it was, honestly, a little selfish of Wolfe to ignore that just so he could live in some old building. As bad it sounds, anybody who is that abnormally attached to one rotting old building, especially in a place like Florida, clearly has issues. But don't get me wrong, I do feel bad for him.
Assuming it stayed up for a couple more years at any rate...that place looked like it was gonna fall apart any day.

Perhaps I miss understood, but I don't think Wolfe had any impact of asbestos or fire issues, but he did protest to paying parts of the building he wasn't a part of and he didn't want is house destroyed without getting paid - which seems fair to me. Especially if the city actively prevented people from fixing it up and adding tenants. Of course he had issues, he killed himself, that's an extremely finalizing proof. He was already sick and old, the city should have never pushed him out like that, imo.

the city could have payed his price for him to move out, they could have used eminent domain to buy his home at fair market value but no they decided to wait till he left so they could rule against him in absentia and just take it. Essentially legalized thievery

The story I heard was that Frank Wolfe tried to salvage his belongings from the top floor but couldn't access the freight elevator since power was turned off. Then, in desperation, he committed suicide.

You should look into the passenger terminal at Montreal's Mirabel Airport. It was demolished last year, and was laid abandoned from passenger service since 2004.

I lived 5 minutes away from this, I remember every time on the way to the beach passing by this, thinking it could be used for something amazing, my dad always would tell me all the stories about it. I'm now living in Missouri and surprised one of my favorite TH-camrs picked up on something I lived so close to!
Very sad about the old man that lived in the top room. I didn't know he killed himself. Although he had questionable taste in interior decor, it was his home to make into what pleased him. The former restaurant looked like a jumping place back in it's day.

Excellent! I grew up in Cocoa Beach in the 70s and 80s - not too far from the Glass Bank. I met Frank Wolfe several times over the years and can even remember his original Wolfie's Seaside Resort on A1A. I may be a little late to the party here, but thanks for bringing back a lot of great memories.
Its a shame they didn't consider turning the penthouse into a tourist attraction for a while.

I live about 30 minutes from it, and usually pass it on the way to my grandmother's house. I remember always pointing at it while passing as a kid, telling my mom I wanted to take the old place one day, restore it, and stick my office in it. I keep hearing of the demolition and just wish someone up there would have done the building justice. Old but unique.
Re on my original statement: I live in satellite beach and haven't been to Cocoa in a while, but when ever we used to drive by, we'd see it. I should have worded it better.

Used to live in the coco beach area when I was a kid. I always rode past it going to school everyday and it just fascinated me. Being such a great work of architecture, I wondered why is this place abandoned? Little did I know that it was a cultural icon and it had a tremendous backstory. There was a neighborhood in satellite beach constructed in the 50s& 60s that housed families stationed at Patrick AFB that boomed back in the day, I was one of the last people to live in those houses before they were all torn down. It’s a sad story really the space coast.. it was like the end of an era. Thank you for uploading this!!

Oh wow, this was an incredible video to watch. I was born in Rockledge just outside Cocoa Beach and lived in Cocoa Beach and south of it in Satellite Beach until 2014 when I moved away. I was always curious about the glass bank and it's history, but I never knew someone was actively living in it for so long. I had thought about trying to get into the building to see the inside (since I couldn't see much looking in the bottom floor windows) when I was younger and more reckless. It would've scared me to death if I had tried to enter the building and somebody was inside! This was wild to watch a history of the building having lived so close to it for so long. Not relevant to the glass bank, but if you're interested in the area just south of Cocoa Beach is Patrick Air Force Base which is a huge Military base sandwiched in-between beach communities. It's really interesting having a military base right on the ocean and much be a popular spot to be stationed haha. Having lived in Cocoa Beach between the Air Force Base and Cape Canaveral there was a consistent flow of rockets, airplanes/jets, and helicopters going off from the North and South. Anyway, I'm rambling, really excellent video to watch and thanks for putting it together! 👍

I've watched a few videos about this glass bank building and they have all been sad. It was so sad to see Frank Wolf's life end the way it did. He may have had money but it sure didn't buy him happiness. Thanks for sharing this story Jake!

You should do the Majesty Building in Altamonte Springs, Florida. Known to the locals as the I-4 Eyesore. An unfinished building that's been sitting there for 16 years.

The rise of University of Miami and that of UCF which I think is connected to this episode as this area was so heavily influenced by NASA and their space exploration.

I live in satellite beach, which is relatively close to cocoa. My family and I drove passed the building often and we always enjoyed looking at it. Around 2013-2014 we stopped taking that road since mostly because we had no reason to go that way. I just found out two months ago that it was demolished and I had no idea about the apartment or the suicide until now

I remember passing this bank all the time growing up There were some guys that used to play tennis on top but nothing else went on there. the building always fasinated me and i noticed it immeditely! Love the videos man keep it up

I used to pass this building all the time on my way to barrier jack's. I never knew it's name, and my family was not around at the time it was a local landmark, so my family used to just call it "the eyesore." When it got demolished, my family and I made jokes about how "it was about time." Kinda feel bad about it now that I know the context. Great video!

Nice video! I used to live in Palm Bay, and have explored the bank after the suicide. I went in there by myself. I almost always go exploring alone. Too bad about it getting torn down. It was a pretty cool place. Actually, there are a lot of abandoned homes, strip malls and office buildings in Brevard county. Ive been in most of them. There were quite a few in my neighborhood that were damaged in the hurricanes we had a few years ago.
