I just came here after visiting a site concerned with the "three greatest living pianists". I expected to see Malofeev mentioned early in the comments thread -- it was surprising he wasn't there. Way at the bottom a couple of people questioned why not.
Malofeev is remarkable to me for several reasons. I'm not specially attracted to the big 19th and 20th century composers; my musical life is devoted to Bach, and Bach, at the time I first encountered Malofeev online, had not yet spoken to him. It appears that that is beginning to happen...
But those early videos, from as early as 2010, caught my attention for their maturity. Even at eleven years old he played like an adult.
To this day, I know of no one, among all those mentioned among the great living pianists, who presents anything close to Malofeev's absolute mastery of dynamics. This struck me listening to him play people I had never even heard before, e.g. Medtner. He has a sense of dynamics analogous to Ansel Adams' conception of gray levels in his photography: it's absolutely precise, repeatable, and useful. He uses dynamic levels for structural expression. Hearing him play e.g. Medtner, I find myself spontaneously relating distinct passages to each other simply because Malofeev presents them to me at identical dynamic levels. This is uncanny.
And of course this Vivaldi transcription is just the place where such a sensibility on Malofeev's part is going to be completely at home...

It is a strange thing, when I hear the much lauded Yunchan Lim, I feel like I'm listening to a precise machine. When I listen to Malofeev, I think of nature, the wind and water - flowing. I see the gushing praise for both but relate to one. I guess we all resonate differently.

Absolutely love BWV593 although I play it on the organ and not piano! The piano transcriptions of Bachs organ works are insanely difficult!

Sometime around age 14 this man discovered voicing and immediately mastered it. If there's a melodic line to be brought out, he'll find it.

This interpretation has nothing to do with Bach, neither with Vivaldi. But it demonstrates that interpreting music is a creative process. Most pianists (and other musicians) simply try to imitate what (they think) the composer wanted and all they dare to do is a FFF instead of a FF or a shy Rubato.... what I just heard is real interpretation!

But being an organist, I do NOT like this piano transcription of Bach’s bwv 593!

But actually I don't think it works very well as a piano piece. Some organ pieces translate well; some don't, and I think this is one that needs the multidimensionality of the organ.
