I have heard that type of off side billet referred to as a half breed. It is thinner and needs to be doubled, as you say, and is more versatile, like having another Latigo on that side. Good thing you explained it. It confused the heck out of me the first time I saw one.

I like to saddle from the offside, drop the cinches and lay the breast collar across the neck. Then, when I go to the left, I can saddle without a bunch of walking back and forth. I feel like we make many horses left side by not spending much time on the right and this is one thing I can do even more efficiently from the right. I like a latigo leather cinch strap on the nearside and (gulp) nylon on the farside. I'm just a N. Alabama boy tho, not near as cool as my Cali friend. Notta cowboy, I just play one on the weekends, occasionally a weekday.
I use nylon on both sides! Less maintenance and lighter. My saddle is a pig! I'm a trail rider.
@@tinoyb9294nylon is less maintenance, but has no give to allow horse to breathe easier. Use a mohair cinch because it has give plus they don't gall and are easy maintenance
We don’t use nylon here but when we used to do clinics in the southeast, we came to understand why you guys do! We even had to buy a neoprene cinch because our mohair cinches never dried out.
@tinoyb9294 Many here do but I don't tie that little Windsor looking knot but just do a couple wraps and put the tail in the keeper. I've gone to the "dark side" as Pat calls it (team roping) and we are constantly tightening cinches to rope and loosening between rounds or when we switch horses. Nylons don't hold their tension as well in those circumstances.
@rafterL78 I never use that knot on my personal saddle, I always use the buckle on the cinch. Some people don't like the buckle, but I've been doing this in mountain riding for 15 years and never had an issue. Like Pat says, there are lots of different ways to do things, and they may be appropriate in different situations.

Up in Cedarville CA the rancher never uses a back cinch and has the front cinch doubled back on itself as the knot? In case he has to bail off he can pull the running end thru releasing the cinch "kinda" completely.. i just couldn't grasp that concept.. I commented "it's a parachute corded ejection seat".. off the Hapgood ranch I went.. More often than not "Cattlemen think they're horseman"..
As for me.. way below advice giving.. great video kids!

I use a Tack berry on the cinch side . Dont have to pull latigo through the cinch ring . Opinions on this devise ?
I don't understand why it would be an improvement. It looks like a really good way to get your fingers pinched and just one more thing to fail when you need it most.

Patrick, you forgot to do one thing before you put the saddle pad on the horse, you didn't swipe across the horses back with your bare hand. You always run your hand over the horses back to check if there is any thing sharp or pieces of dirt that might irritate a horse after they are saddled.
Pat thoroughly grooms his horses prior to shooting a video. We wouldn’t want to waste precious time showing things that we take for granted. Especially when we need that time for doing sit ups.
Deb, how old is Pat now, if you don't mind me asking. I am going to guess around 68 maybe?

@trw3865 No. It’s because he served his country in Vietnam where his government poisoned him with Agent Orange and ruined his lungs. It never ceases to amaze me how people have no problem being rude and jumping to conclusions in this age of social media. People feel that their internet anonymity gives them permission to type things that they would never say in person. By the way, you’re welcome for the free education on horsemanship from a man who has forgotten more about horses than you will ever understand.
@PatnDebPuckett I had assumed it was that, plus all the dust inhaled in ranch life. When I hear it, it reminds me this man is a warrior with a kind heart and battle scars (many unseen) to prove it. It just reminds me that this horseman and national treasure needs our prayers.
