    To start off I watch too many TH-cam videos when I get interested in a new toy. Someone once said to me “to take something complex and explain it in simple terms is to have masted that subject.” Your explanation and quality of production are to be complimented. I recently purchased a product that I’d like to review it in various configurations and decided to go with a DJI drone. One of my biggest concerns is to buy the Air, a now discounted Platinum, or wait for the II. You’ve been a nice cushion while impatiently waiting.

      @AttiBear  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your kind words George. Really appreciate it 👍
      Considering your Drone question. Well i kinda get the feeling, that DJI will let us wait a bit longer for the Mavic Pro 2. The Platinum kinda was a soft launch and they didn't push it to hard. With the Air it's somewhat different. If you haven't seen my Mavic Pro Platinum vs Mavic Air Comparison I encourage you to check it. If you don't need the extra range you can't go wrong with the Air at the Moment.

    In 2017 we should not need to worry about SOFT footage. @DJI we don't need any more different colour Mavics ! We want Mavic with a decent camera!

    • @AttiBear
      @AttiBear  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally agree with you. The most shocking thing is that they upgraded the camera of the Platinum without making a big deal out of it. You can see hard proof of it in this one here: th-cam.com/video/lcmtXVEs9Nk/w-d-xo.html

      Atti Bear but still didn't fix the noise reduction blur issue (everything below +1 sharpening on the Mavic). No problem on the P4P, sharpening -2 looks stunning and way more natural and cleaner. At -3 the same noise reduction issue kicks in, mushy.

    • @AttiBear
      @AttiBear  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I‘d wish it would be the same with the Mavic. When it comes to the image the Phantom is without a doubt superior. I’m still hoping they’ll fix it or at least improve it😕

    Nice video. But today I flew with the waypoint options and had him take 4 pictures, all were out of focus. Do you have a solution for that?

  • @synclops
    @synclops 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just what I needed. I think its about personal taste... I set sharpness to -1 because I saw some videos about ideal settings where more than one person talked about it to be more cinematic and stuff.... but in reality, I'm not shooting cinema movies, so I prefer more crisp.
    Your video just open up my eyes to switch these settings more often.
    Thanks

    • @AttiBear
      @AttiBear  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The longer I work with Mavics the more i get the feeling, that the sharpness can vary significantly. Especially if you take a look at the new Platinum. But still -1 in my opinion is way to blurry. I tend to go with +1 if i have a lot of details in my shots and if needed I can denoise them in post. I'm glad i could help you synclops. Happy flying

    nice, but what about DOF with manual focus? Are you aware that a tighter diaphragm means more DOF? This means that you should be able to force this by, for instance, raising the ISO or lowering shutter speed. or both.

    Great video! One of the best sharpness tests for the Mavic out there!
    Since "everyone" recommended the +1 sharpness setting, I've been using that a lot. In good lightning that looks quite OK, but if there are a lot of shadows I see a lot of noise! The sharpening is also a bit too strong. So, for everyday footage I think I will use the 0 setting. Can't bother with Neat. For night scenes with max ISO, I guess -1 will do the trick as you mentioned. Thanks!

    great video! I want to make you a question; I am not a drone profesional, I am current videographer and in a past wedding I made some shoots with the mavic pro, but now I am seeing and it looks like a gaussian blur... I use the Log and I think I set the sharpness in -2 because of the nervous of the wedding and because in the configuration of any Canon or Sony videocameras I use to set this in the minimum... I supponse that nothing can be done now... ??

    So with manual focus, wouldn't you have to constantly focus manually as you fly? Seems it would be terribly bothersome. Am I missing something?

    • @AttiBear
      @AttiBear  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. If you focus on something on the horizon you have overall a sharp image, unless you fly close to objects. Then you'll need to refocus.

    This is a very good video in not only explaining the difference of sharpness but also showing. Now I know for sure I will be using +1 sharpness and depending on importance of footage will be using neat video to denoise once I purchase it. I already have many corrective and color LUT's so just need the neat video to make the footage really good. Thanks for this I really learned a lot especially about the focus.

    Hey Atti!, Are you using any ND filters? My footage at +1 looks way more noisy than yours :( ... or is this a shutter speed issue that's introducing more noise?

    • @AttiBear
      @AttiBear  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Conrad, yes I'm using ND filters. If your Footage is noisier maybe it's because you are recording at a high ISO level. ND Filters don't affect the Noise in your imagery. Your ISO Settings on the other hand do. Try to stay as near to ISO 100 as possible. Maybe my tutorial about ND Filters and how to use them does help you th-cam.com/video/xASp86x3y84/w-d-xo.html

    I do not think it is noise you see with +x sharpness but compression artifacts - 60Mbits simply cannot handle so many details in the footage. 0 sharpness is really sweet spot as other settings are blurry or overshaprned with visible compression.

    • @AttiBear
      @AttiBear  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess it's a bit of both. The Mavic is really quick with artifacts when you raise the ISO. I started to adjust my settings depending on the scenery. If I shoot something that has a lot of fine details I rather go with +1 and add a denoiser in post if needed. For not so complex compositions i go with 0

    • @burnham187
      @burnham187 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really is the noise and has been proven and can be fixed using a noise reduction software like Neat Video. There are many tutorials on this and how to fix it.

    • @AttiBear
      @AttiBear  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use every editing software that is supporting LUTs. But you still need to color grade your footage after that. It'll only make your editing process easier. As far as i know there is no fire and forget kind of app for that.

      Atti Bear well I'm trying to find the best possible camera settings so that I don't have to edit or colorgrade my drone footage

    • @justuslm
      @justuslm 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well, you are standing in front of the same problem I am. I went for the D-Cinelike colour profile, using the style settings as post production.
      There, I chose sharpness +1, contrast +1 (since D-Cinelike is rather flat, but this way it looks better than normal settings), and saturation at your personal liking. I wouldn't go below +1, since you want to add colour to the flat look of D-Cinelike, and if you like the look, +2 and +3 are both good options. Keep in mind that you can always try more settings to find the one that suits you most, this is only what I personally like for my Mavic footage. You can for example choose to go higher on the contrast setting, but keep in mind that increasing the contrast comes with a loss in dynamic range, meaning you will lose detail in the very bright and dark areas. Also, if +3 isn't enough saturation for you, you will need to use a different colour profile, such as the normal one or something like TrueColour.
      Use manual settings for ISO and shutter, so you can keep your ISO as low as possible (preferrably always at 100) and use the shutter speed and ND filters to get good exposure. For ND filters, the general "rule" is:
      Use a filter with the right strength to keep your shutter speed to 1/2xfps. The setting doesn't show the 1/ so that means at 30 fps you'll wnat to get close to 60 on the shutter, at 25 fps you'll want to get clsoe to 50, and so on.
      However, if you want to upload your footage or use it in semi-professional or even professional work, there are two things, one of which you should do:
      The first option is post processing on the PC, including a proper noise reduction algorythm, if you want to export in 4k.
      If you don't want to export in 4k but in 1080p or 1440p instead, there is no need for noise reduction. If you shoot in 4k, the footage will be downsampled to 1080p or 1440p, which leads to a huge reeduction of noise in the image, while preserving as much image detail as the resolution allows for.
      That's why I will always recommend shooting in 4k.
      And just in case you don't know: Never shoot at more than 30 fps with the Mavic! To achieve higher framerates, it uses pixel binning which leads to a huge loss in image quality.
      It looks terrible, don't do it!

    Apparently you don’t know a lot about video and drones. The processor in a drone is not powerful compared to let’s say a MacBook Pro or Windows equivalent. So don’t use for things you can do in post production must better and easier. Like sharpening, saturation. Well pretty much every video operation. Shoot in autofocus while flying, so the red lines don’t contribute very much, only consumes battery and processor power. Make the video as flat as possible and do color grading in post. Using a flat profile will preserve the highs and lows much better allowing to grade them in post. An interesting discussion, on a Mavic Pro, is to leave the camera cap on or not. Leave the cap on prevents micro vibrations in the camera, micro vibrations that will influence sharpness negatively on the cost of possible sun flares in the cap. A professional NLE like DavinciResolve 16 Studio can take away a lot of the flares.
