yeah i am not sure why....people always make these videos with dead easy backgrounds.....why not with trees someone with dark hair and trees behind...?? or light color hair with sand behind? or a very light sky???? these are the types of things which are very difficult to seperate....not so much a chic with dark hair on a perfectly white background..
+Kel Simmons I was thinking same thing first second of the video!! I gues this are tutorials of beginers...
SO MAKE A DIFFICULT VIDEO AND UPLOAD SO WE CAN APPRECIATE YOU Kel Simmons........
THIS IS NOT SO EASY AS IT LOOKS MR KEL............SO DONT COMMENT LIKE STUPIDS
Kel Simmons (DUNK CAKES)
I WILL PUT CAPS ON TO JUST INSULT U MORON....
1ST :- THING U R POINTING MISTAKES IN THAT VIDEO IN PLACE OF APPRECIATING IT
2ND :-THING THAT MY ENGLISH IS FAR BETTER THAN URS...SO JOIN CLASSES IF U HAVE MONEY TO AFFORD
3RD :- THING ..U SHOULD NOT CALL ME THAT RETARDED WORD...AS EVERYONE HAS RIGHTS TO SPEAK AND COMMENT ON ANY VIDEO.......
4TH:- THING ...PEOPLE LIKE U ARE THE CURSE ON THE EARTH AND DISASTER FOR HUMAN SURVIVAL.....U MUST BANNED TO TAKE STEP OUT SIDE UR LATRINE(IF U HAV THOSE )
Kel Simmons Totally agree with you Kel - this is exactly what many of us are looking for.
Kel Simmons cuz we noobs and wanna learn basics
I wish someone would make a tutorial doing the same thing but with an actual background, how many people take pictures with white screen as a background?
+Alberto Segovia hehe yeah. I mean with a white background you could just use a blending mode to get the hair clean. Would take literally 1 second
Exactly that's what I was thinking. This tutorial is of no use when it comes to actual composition and subject extraction. This guy intentionally choose this kind of sample picture.
There are much better and real tutorials on other channels on youtube.
Click the box with circle in the middle in the layers tab between the layer fx and create new fill or adjustment layer icons..When prompt to "mask edge"simply right click your mask and select "Refine edge"to open the refine mask window as shown at 1:48.It took me a few tries but I eventually found it.
this is what I've been looking for! Thank you. There are so many ways but this is the best one I've found
Wow! On a completely high contrast background, you had to go through all this extra work. PS CS5 couldn't determine what you wanted. I can only wonder how difficult it would be if the background was complex.
Awesome. I have seen several videos here regarding this topic but this was the best. :) Thanks.
For you guys who don't have the masks panel because of a newer version of photoshop; select your mask and go to window->properties :)
Thanks!
I found you make your selection and then select Add Layer Mask (button below the layers). THEN the properties window shows the mask properties.
I have Photoshop CC, no Masks option in Windows list and no Add Layer Mask in Layer list. So freakin annoying to NOT have the buttons that others have to follow along. Now what?
just double click the mask layer of the image then the option refine mask would pop up afterwards
thanks
@Apazia
You can also use Color Range Command trying to select the whites and then you can use Selective Color to dark a little bit the white areas. There's a lot of ways to do this. Thanks for the tip!!!
Very well explained, works well with contiguous colors also.
The extraction principles are the same, irrespective of background. If you need to place an extracted layer upon one which is significantly different in lighting or colour then you would need to colour correct, adjust lighting or focus on the selected foreground or background, depending upon the requirements of the final image. You would try to minimise obvious discrepancies before you started creating layers; the amount of work would depend upon the complexity of the final image.
the best hair-cutting tutorial great job thanx
Firstly spot on with the fact that you take into account the word 'advanced' from the title & i have to agree with you stating that he used a studio photograph as an example in this tutorial.but that's the idea.he utilized an image with a clear define background so that he can teach viewers the basic of advanced hair selection & its up to you to discover.thats my point.i think you people misinterpret the word advanced right there.sory dude.sometimes you just have to read between the lines.
X-Cel Ent! VG presentation. i followed along using an image with trees in the background and got great results. Thank you.
How often do you see solid colour backgrounds??? Show us how to extract from a normal background, Please.
All these tutorial are with perfectly solid background and great contrast. Let’s see one tutorial with no so great background/contras, ie.: blond hair on white/light background, dark hair on dark background
I totally agree. Super shit these tutorials with solid bg, not real life situation. I found this one that is nice and might be helpful th-cam.com/video/3yZhsVm9Tso/w-d-xo.html
I know I can understand all these people making these, Sometimes I wonder if they do it for themselves ,, makes them feel like an instructor, get brave you guys give us one that shows you really are good and know PS, extract hair that is standing in front of busy similar color backgound ya know like in real life not in a friggn studio, ,,,

I like that you spelled graphics with an "X"
Great job. Exactly what I was looking for.
The easy and quick tut. , great job..
Great tut but how often are you going to have a image with a full white background, put some colors in the background and its not near that easy.
Yes it was easy task but stil nice tutorial... When you have difrent vackground with more colors whit refine edges it is very hard to get good selection .
Thanx bro ... it works wid some photos.... but it doesn't with another... is the Quality of photos matter ??
this is awesome and exceedingly helpful. Thank you!
Thank u so much....... one of the best tutorial
Thank you mate, this totally rocks!
Thanks for the tutorial. I am curious as to how this will work with a colored background. I added a pinkish color behind it and the colors mask didn't come out too great.
Thank you for sharing and making this video. it was helpful!
Looolzz !! yup you are right , it's not soo simple with a real image with colorful or complicated background , i guess even a good designer using PS for years wont do it 100% , 90% of hair will be a miracle...
very good tutorial, thanks it helped me a lot !
cool tut man,, keep it coming,, thanks,,, helped a lot
I know in this video you instructed how to bring up the masks window. However i'm using cs6 as a trial and see no option in the window drop down for masks. It just skips from "layers" to measurement log." Does anyone know where i can bring up this tab?

You rock! Great job!
I'm on PS CS6 and I can't find the "masks" in the window bar....where do I look?
Solves my biggest dilemma. Thank you!
Do you have to Flatten image when you have finished editing, or do you delete layers you no longer need?
what if the background of the photo I'm using has other colors than white

In case, there is a multicolor dark background, this tutorial doesnot apply to it.
Help me out in that case please.
Awesome!
wow, ? someone mentioned what background? I learn something everyday. thanks....
When I increase the radius, my mask moves inside my object, instead of to the outside. It removes more than I want!
how to extract hair with bg , not solid white or other color ??
th-cam.com/video/3yZhsVm9Tso/w-d-xo.html

thanks
thanks bro
Nice one...
awesome
wow Good Job..
Thanks, but you should add a background first to see how it looks...
i figured it out guys, to find the mask window in photoshop cs6, go to windows, then properties, then go down to add mask at the bottom right, like a Japanese flag, there you'll see your mask windows, you could add me on facebook@stanley sky, i also need Photoshop enthusiasts, who i could share thoughts with
Yeah, I need to mask brown hair on a gray background, white is easy, magic wand.
