This is the last song I showed my mother before she passed away last Christmas. I remember it with complete and utter clarity. As she lay in her hospital bed, I placed my headphones gently on her ears and pressed play. I remember all the features of her beautiful face, each line and crease had a story to tell about her life. And what a life it was, filled elation, joy and unequivocal love, along with sorrow and more pain than I care to imagine. Her strength and love is something that I can only aspire to. As the song reached it crescendo I watched as the hairs on her arms began to slowly raise created by tiny goosebumps. Then as the song slowly drew to an end, I witnessed the most radiant smile along with one....just one little teardrop falling from her cheek. We didn't need words... When her eyes stared into mine it was the warmest, most pure love only a mother and her child could possibly convey. We were absolutely blissful in the sound of silence.
I know your pain, Ms Natalia.... all too well. Your mom will always be with you, just in a different way. You’ll see. And btw, you have nothing to aspire to. This world needs more people like you. Be well.
Fun Fact: The symbol for the band Disturbed, used originally as art for the band's Believe album, is actually made up of four religious symbols: The Jewish Star of David, The Wiccan Pentacle (often confused to be a satanic symbol), The Crescent Moon of Islam and the Christian Cross. The idea was for it to be a symbol that represented Unity especially since most of the band was raised Catholic save for lead singer, David Draiman, who was raised Jewish and claimed that while they don't believe in religion itself they do believe in God.

I tended to agree with John Undefined’s comment with regard to Disturbed’s cover; I was listening to their “Official Music Video”. I definitely preferred Simon & Garfunkel’s version! That said, in no way did I personally feel that it was somehow “better”, superior to the original. The lyrics themselves, were so spot on in ‘64 when Paul Simon wrote this song, and if possible, even more so now~ they’re hauntingly bleak, despairing, & yet, somehow soulful, hopeful… Paul & Art’s voices, tempo with which they gave life to those lyrics, imo, only served to make them even more hauntingly, beautifully poignant. Having since read a little background on why Disturbed wanted to do the cover, some other facts.. I think I most appreciate Disturbed’s version, not as “a better cover”, but as a loving tribute to Simon & Garfunkel and the song lyrics Paul had written. in that regard, I believe they excelled. 😊

"...silence like a cancer grows." Still we remain asleep, as the world continues to witness unspeakable acts of death & destruction. We've learned nothing & never will - aiding in that well of silence.
"We've learned nothing & never will" Well... It's not true in this form. There are ppl who did, and if you did, you should know there is two group of them. The 1st try to wake up the human race, the 2nd try to keep it in the deep dream which they live in, and try to stop the 1st group as well. /Sry for english, it's not my cup of tea./
When you can find the time away from your voodoo dolls, & blood letting of goats, & can complete a coherent thought, pls revisit this site. The human race is holding its breath in anticipation of your infinite wisdom.
Even as that silence is aiding the black clouds of death come overwhelming me. Suffocating me. Until one day I give up. I give in to death. I lost. Nothing could prepare me for this. Now I am no longer existent. They told me there was a god who would take care of me. Yet I see nothing. Everything that has been told to me were lies. Lies told by the servants of death. The second we're born we are vunerable to disease famine. Death. Why are we still here? No one knows. We all see the world from one place. Our own place. We never. see what the other person sees. We never hear what they say. We are all in our own world. What he hear is completely different from what others hear. We don't know our true friends like we do. We know nothing. We are all fools listening to the black cloud. Why?
I was listening to this beautiful song on the radio and I had to find the name of the group. I am 67 years old and I started to cry. You have a strong voice that grabs a persons soul. You remind me a lot of Leonard Cohen who has always been a favorite of mine even before hallelujah. Will we hear more songs like this from you? Please say yes. Thank you Joy Jesse
This is a hauntingly beautiful version of a classic by Simon & Garfunkel from around 50 years ago.. an amazing cover.. These words resonate with everything going on in the world today, not just Covid 19.. Simon & Garfunkel are true genius personified.. Prophets themselves.. It's a pity people only listen to the music and not the words. No soul...
Simon and Garfunkel's version is God's warning about the future that was coming for us if we kept behaving the way we do. Disturbed's is God's anger and disappointment that came from us not listening to the warning.
This is such a deep song... the lyrics made me cry about our cruel reality. His deep voice with this songs rhyme , Touches my soul, heart and mind. And so... with that being said... it makes me day dream.... throwing me into the unknown. Of my imagination... PS. It's such a good song... why would people make fun of such a good song...? I mean yeah it is funny I do that too but damn... what a song... it will never die. I am sure of it.
This was my dad's favourite song he passed away last summer I remember sitting on the edge of his hospital bed I played this song one last time for him but then his heart stopped and then we sat there in the silence I really miss him but this song reminds me of him and reminds me of the memories we made together

People talking without speaking....people listening without hearing That's so true of todays society. People don't have real conversations anymore rather they rely on their texting and tweets. We need to sit with others more and actually talk and learn what is going on around us.
Draimans singing of the Sound of Silence is arguably one of the best there is. It will make you think about how messed up our society really is and that there's still hope for us all..
this speaks to so many things going on today, beautiful, poignant words. And this man's voice when he changes octaves and the emotion and anger begin to flow... Chill bumps every single time!!
Always liked this song, but this cover is another level. Came up on the radio and about blew me out of my seat. Holy SHIT he puts so much into it. Just... damn.
I lost my best friend to blood cancer when I was 8 years old. At his funeral they played his favorite song - the sound of silence. Even as an adult, I broke down emotionally crying when I heard the song. The cover version of Disturbed helped me to cope with this trauma. I can now listen to the original again without breaking down, but it still makes me cry every time...
My father is dying and we're making funeral arrangements. I know my mom is going to ask me to sing at his service and I started to really sit down and think about what a fitting tribute would be, because he isn't really the "Amazing Grace" type, or anything more traditional. This is it. This is the song that will fit his funeral. I hope to do it justice for him and for my mother, it's a song they both love and they *really* loved this cover.
I remember when starting my journey into metal music around 2 years ago. I'd heard some songs by disturbed and loved the band. Then heard they had covered this song and took a listen to it. Interesting to see that sometimes (I repeat... "Sometimes"), artists can make a version better than the original. And trust me, I'm a purist, I mostly love the original versions. But this one, is simply amazing.
This song is such a perfect metaphor for contemporary times... "People talking without speaking... People hearing without listening... and the people bowed and prayed, to the neon god they made". Almost as if the original songwriters could see our obsession with cellphones, our inability to communicate with one another well, in the 21st century.

when I first listened to this song I was on the verge of tears at how powerful this cover is and I was also caught off guard because I thought this would be like down with the sickness style, you know angry. I was very wrong. Oh, and the 'neon god' that the song refers to is the television and the 'sound of silence' is the brain. No, I'm not a philosopher if that's what you're thinking. I just looked it up. But I can give modern philosophers a run for their money because I can be very philosophical when the need for it is great.
That is the beauty of a really good musical track and the lyrics therein, the meaning is open to each listeners interpretation, for whomever listens and how they interpret it, their reflections and their life's experiences will give it whatever meaning they wish to impart Even a change in mood by each and every listener can provide an even more enlightening meaning. Despite what the original author intended.

Not of 2020 but mid of 2023 and leading into the Beast system (New World Order) which is sometime in 2024... Everything is biblical including this song which sings of the first Antichrist (neon god that we created, AI system) which everyone will bow to and lose their souls... Laugh all you want but its true... and only the few will open up to the truth and realize what's truly going on while the majority willfully cover their eyes and ears to truth... They can't handle the fact that they've been living their lives wrong this whole time, they cannot accept that God is real and that we've been lied to this whole time by everyone in control... Everyone will have a choice to make very soon, but sadly a lot of you will choose wrong...
100%
David Draiman.. You did this song justice. Normally, I would say this song should be avoided unless you can do it well. But, you David.. You brought this song back to life and gave it so much power.
quite, better than the original. But only because times have changed - the original would have been different had they made it today
The actual best cover of this song I've ever heard. Definitely as good as the original, if not slightly better.
Agreed. I usually like originals better than remakes, but for once I actually like this better. (No offence or hate, the original is good too!) 😌
Alex Summers it is such a struggle to choose...this version is powerful, intills hope. the original is kinda gloomy and spooky.

"...silence like a cancer grows." Still we remain asleep, as the world continues to witness unspeakable acts of death & destruction. We've learned nothing & never will - aiding in that well of silence.
"We've learned nothing & never will"
Well...

@Scott Allen well spoken.
Why?

This is a hauntingly beautiful version of a classic by Simon & Garfunkel from around 50 years ago.. an amazing cover..

That's why I listen to music because of the words
Simon and Garfunkel's version is God's warning about the future that was coming for us if we kept behaving the way we do.
Disturbed's is God's anger and disappointment that came from us not listening to the warning.

I'm not really into heavy metal bands and all... but I have to admit, this sounded freaking awesome!

My father is dying and we're making funeral arrangements. I know my mom is going to ask me to sing at his service and I started to really sit down and think about what a fitting tribute would be, because he isn't really the "Amazing Grace" type, or anything more traditional. This song is such a perfect metaphor for contemporary times... "People talking without speaking... People hearing without listening... and the people bowed and prayed, to the neon god they made". when I first listened to this song I was on the verge of tears at how powerful this cover is and I was also caught off guard because I thought this would be like down with the sickness style, you know angry.
I don't see it as "television" but alienation as a whole that didn't let out people's inner voices
