I tried my best to identify all those fish for my friend Mike, but of course I am no expert when it comes to Puerto Rico fishes. But this is what I told him they could be: (1) Painted Mackerel/Cero (scomberomorus regalis) (2) Blue Runner/Bluestripe Jack (Caranx crysos) (3) Littlescale Threadfin (Polydactylus oligodon) (4) Yellowtail Snapper (Ocyurus chrysurus) (5) Black Margate (anisotremus surinamensis) (6) Permit (Trachinotus falcatus) Always happy to see you doing some Multi-Species fishing, Mike! Tight lines!
*I love it **enjoyable.fishing** recommend I’m using it for my 1.0 Crankbaits and small Jerkbait. Paired with my Assassin. Works great, feels great. Would definitely recommend this setup.*
The reason you lost the bigger ones is you were trying to force them in to quickly. You should let them take more drag and tire themselves out so you don't snap the line trying to fight them. Bass fishing is a little different but you did good for your first time in salt water in a long time! Nice Video.
Hey! I love your videos so much!!! I lived in Puerto Rico for close to 12 years and know exactly where you were fishing from. I live about five minutes from that exact same beach! Btw although in San Juan there is some good fishing, usually the greatest attraction is offshore fishing for Marlin or Mahi Mahi. Hopefully next time you visit you could make a video on it! Love the videos!
Looks like the fish you caught @2:54 is a Pacific Threadfin, but we call it "Moi" here in Hawaii. They're supposed to be great eating, but I have never ate one myself.
+Matthew Welsh The problem in this area is ciguatera poisoning. Large snappers and jacks can kill a human. We have about 300 cases per month on St. Thomas. It is a toxin they get from the reef fish they eat. A ship crew caught an amber jack a few years back. They had to airlift the whole crew off the ship and one died within hours of eating it.
I taught a friend how to fish senkos using the tips in your videos, his first bass was an 18.75 inch northern strain largemouth. Thats pretty big for MI. Thx man!
rubberduckyfishing WOAH!!! Thats big for MI but HUGEEE for his first bass!! My first bass was 8 inches lol and I was ecstatic! I'm glad my videos helped :D
+Born Outdoors your not tiring out the fish till death, just still he stops running. These fish pull drag. And if a fish is really tired, set in the water and make a swimming motion with it in your tail and it will be fine
Glad you had a good time over here in puerto rico !! That big fish in the lagoon was problably a sabalo they are our monster fish over here but people dont eat them they have to much spins but they are great for sport fishing
You don't need wire for Spanish macs, just a 50 to 60 lb mono or fluorocarbon leader. With all those rocks around it helps to have some abrasion protection.
come to ny and catch some big striped bass definitely a lot different from largemouth. or even fluke are a ton of fun . best tip for fluke is a white bucktail with a yellow gulp swimming mullet with a dropper loop about 6 inches to a foot with a teaser or just a hook and another gulp
Of a dock in Arecibo, Puerto Rico (hometown), there's a lot of 6+ ft Robalo (snook) right on the visible shore. You can only cast out of boats since the fish are used to eating food given my tourist. But they're huuuuugeee!
first fish was a cero mackerel, blue runner, not sure what the other fish was, next was probably a snook that you lost or a barracuda, next was a yellow tail snappa, then a black margate, tomtate or sailors choice, then a pompano
hey just a tip for next time you will have a lot more luck if u fish in the late evening like 12 to 3 am or like 5 to 7 am just from past ocean experiences
Where were you? I'm in PR right now and brought my poles. I went bass fishing today at Logo Cerrillos in Ponce... got skunked. The fish were jumping all around me. It was a beautiful area though.
+Zack Hughes don't need your equipment. As a fellow fishermen and puertorican a recommend Puerto Rico Tarpon Corp. Huge Tarpon out here. Also a have a friend that does deep sea fishing, but his charter boat is located on the southeast part of the island. Good Luck
Hey mike love the videos and more wen you were hear in Puerto Rico , question you only fished in San Juan the capital did you go anewer ells in the islade ? sorry abaut the gramer
Love your videos. I have a question though. I have a pond that is almost completely full of moss and algae. What are some baits and lures I should use??
i see several identification attempts, but the first 1 was a cero mackerel ( great eating) the other yellow 1 was a yellowtail snapper (also great eating). also , do they call fiddler crabs spider crabs in Puerto Rico? spider crabs in Florida are a way different crab
Do you have to take apart your reel and clean it after fishing saltwater ? Im going to the beach in a few weeks and want to fish but don't want to mess up my reels
Lindsay Stewart-Nunez I rinsed it off in the shower each day after I used it. Just be careful not to get any sand in it and don't drop it in the saltwater and it should be fine, especially if ur reels have corrosion resistant ball bearings, good luck!
Nice to see you fishing some where else and also other then just bass, videos are awesome keep it up hopefully more salt water fishing in the future god bless.
blake martin IMO the medium heavy I had is too heavy for trout. You can check if they have a medium or medium light extreme rod though, that would work well
Nice Spanish Mackerel. Blue fish was the second, the fifth was a Yellow Tail Jack, sixth was a pin fish, seventh was a Pompano, well done Michael and sister. You will have to tell me all about it.
Fromdabankfishing Will do! I'll prob be holding another sub tourney next month maybe you'll be free to join! Also, one of my subs caught a really nice bass from snell's today, looked to be around 5 lbs!
hey man nice catch. you were fishing most of the time literally a block away from where I live. thx I didn't know there was good fishing there. ill defienently try it out these days. but be really careful that lagoon you fished in is a reserve. if they catch u fishing there they WILL arrest you. and you used some other protected species for bait. but next time your down here in pr let me know and ill take u out to some good spots!
1Rod1ReelFishing Thanks for the reply! I actually picked one up a few days ago for a trip. Loving it, I've caught 3 bass with it (which is good for a starter outer like me, haha).
Hello. I like fishing but don't know where I can get strong line because I cannot cast far away as a I am a shore angler like you. Where could I get a line and rod like yours? Thanks.
TrueThre Damn I'll have to do my research next time I live-line. Well if it counts for anything all those fish I live-lined were released alive since nothing ate em haha (minus the one I cut up :P)
I'm thinking about starting a fishing TH-cam channel any suggestions on necessary equipment for recording like a gopro or what type of computer and software to upload with
Im more of a fresh water guy myself. But every time i go on vaca to the ocean i only seam to catching things at dusk. Good video though. Youll have to try some dusk into night clips next time, thats when all the big ones come out to play
Some interesting fish there, I just got back from vacation too, did some surf and pier fishing. Got mostly blues with a few exceptions, I made a bluefish video and got bit, lol
Hey man Roc from RockinRocFishing I'm gonna be down in Puerto Rico in the summer because I have family there and I want to take my 2 favorite combos. Can u tell me how I can get those down there? Or how u got yours down there? Thanks, tight lines! Btw my rods are single piece rods, any help is appreciated.
nicki has an amazing smile, we need to see her fish more
I tried my best to identify all those fish for my friend Mike, but of course I am no expert when it comes to Puerto Rico fishes. But this is what I told him they could be:
(1) Painted Mackerel/Cero (scomberomorus regalis)
(2) Blue Runner/Bluestripe Jack (Caranx crysos)

(5) Black Margate (anisotremus surinamensis)
(6) Permit (Trachinotus falcatus)
Always happy to see you doing some Multi-Species fishing, Mike! Tight lines!
Extreme Philly Fishing that Permit is a protected species down in the island... O hope he didn’t use it as bait 😭😰
(1) was a spanish mackerel painted don't have the same stripe down the middle
(6) is also know as a bat fish
Extreme Philly Fishing it’s a Spanish mackerel
cero mackeral, yellowtail snapper, tomate grunt
*I love it **enjoyable.fishing** recommend I’m using it for my 1.0 Crankbaits and small Jerkbait. Paired with my Assassin. Works great, feels great. Would definitely recommend this setup.*

Bass fishing is a little different but you did good for your first time in salt water in a long time! Nice Video.
Joint Venture Haha yeah saltwater fish r stronger than freshwater ones no doubt. Next time I fish the salt I'll definitely have my drag set properly!
1Rod1ReelFishing what is your favorite freshwater fish species
I think your first fish was a Spanish mackerel
Griffin Sherron I am 90% confident that his first fish was a Cero/Painted Mackerel (Scomberomorus regalis). It's range matches as well.
I was thinking the same thinf
UNiQ Billz thinf
UNiQ Billz thing
cero
just caught my first ever bass yesterday, 3 pounder :)
TheAllMiteyTim wow congrats, and thats a monster for your first one! My first bass was 8 inches lol :P Keep slaying em brah!
+Charles Cordero thanks for the tips, I always wanted to catch some mahi mahi!
1Rod1ReelFishing that little silver round fish you caught was a very small permit
I’m staying in San Juan and am looking for some spots to cast my rod from the surf, any chance you might be able to provide the name of the beach?
Looks like the fish you caught @2:54 is a Pacific Threadfin, but we call it "Moi" here in Hawaii. They're supposed to be great eating, but I have never ate one myself.
Moi is my second favorite fish to eat honestly
+Antboi He was in Puerto Rico so how can it be a Pacific anything?
Don't know, but it is one. Maybe theres a different name for it over there.
+antboi that was a sand trout
+Antboi Atlantic Threadfin? 😂
the yellow fish looked to be a yellowtail snapper.. amazing table quality if thats what it was ill have to see it again
+Matthew Welsh The problem in this area is ciguatera poisoning. Large snappers and jacks can kill a human. We have about 300 cases per month on St. Thomas. It is a toxin they get from the reef fish they eat. A ship crew caught an amber jack a few years back. They had to airlift the whole crew off the ship and one died within hours of eating it.
as well as baby barracuda.
very rarely will it kill but box jellys will kill ya in 90 seconds
Bucktail and gulp swimming mullet the John Skinner classic combo.
You got me into fishing. Thanks dude. Keep up the great work 😀
Whenever I use blood worm alternatives on the Elizabeth river which leads to Virginia beach, we fell in so many croakers definetly a promising bait!!
awsome video the first fish u caught was a cero mackeRAL
sorry last 3 letters i hit caps lock by accident
2 fish was a blue runner
3 fish whiting
4 fish a baby white fish
the one you lost was probaly a tarpon
Loving the old vids! Great content!
that's a cero mackeral btw.
great vid!
spanish*
No kingfish
ur right
+WahooKiller Fish/Trickshot not a kingfish look up cero mackeral
+Reb CS:GO Spanish mackerel don't have that line through their bodies
Great video as usual! First fish was Spanish mackerel, second was a crevalle jack, third was and fourth was yellow snapper I believe.
The one u missed in the shallow might have been a tarpon
I taught a friend how to fish senkos using the tips in your videos, his first bass was an 18.75 inch northern strain largemouth. Thats pretty big for MI. Thx man!
rubberduckyfishing WOAH!!! Thats big for MI but HUGEEE for his first bass!! My first bass was 8 inches lol and I was ecstatic! I'm glad my videos helped :D
1Rod1ReelFishing i have a lake by my house and the bass and catfish in ther r like mutant
Spanish mackerel not barracuda
Bethany Starbucks i thought it was a Bluefish.
Bethany Starbucks just checked, it is indeed a Cero Mackerel
Awesome fishing! Fantastic job for having little surf fishing experience!
Losen up your drag and let the fishing run and tire out
Thats exactly why he lost those bigger fish
fatalthought99 Do you think the big fish was a tarpon?
If you tire out the fish they have a less chance of surviving..
+Born Outdoors your not tiring out the fish till death, just still he stops running. These fish pull drag. And if a fish is really tired, set in the water and make a swimming motion with it in your tail and it will be fine
Born Outdoors but they have a chance with a weedless lure deep in there mouth?
your first fish was the fantastic deliscious Snook!!! you threw him back??? LOL...you freshwater guys crack me up...looks like PR is fun!!
I guess nikki is just better at getting crabs than you :3
The first fish was a spanish mackerel (or king mackerel) the pretty fish with the yellow stripe and yellow tail was a yellow tail snapper.
I think that first fish you caught was a mackerel
Spanish mackerel
+BlackHawkElite 5 no. I've caught Spanish before they have different colors
In australia we call it school mackerel
No mackerel are more of a tiger print with blue and mackerel don't really have noticeable teeth
+Nicholas Chavez yes they do I've caught them they have a lot teeth
That little fish that you caught for bait that you said was a new species at 8:47 was a baby permit. In America those get huge and are delicious
damn freshwater fisherman
Glad you had a good time over here in puerto rico !! That big fish in the lagoon was problably a sabalo they are our monster fish over here but people dont eat them they have to much spins but they are great for sport fishing
You don't need wire for Spanish macs, just a 50 to 60 lb mono or fluorocarbon leader. With all those rocks around it helps to have some abrasion protection.
i like when you show when you cuaght the fish so i can see what time you ought it and the weather so i can try keep up the good videos man :)
First fish was definitely a Spanish Mackrel. Great video man, I could feel the stoke and you crack me up.
i have now reached my destiny ,just watched all ur videos!!!
+Raleigh Anderson hahahaha xD Thanks for the support bro, good stuff!!
+1Rod1ReelFishing np

+elix smit lol
come to ny and catch some big striped bass definitely a lot different from largemouth. or even fluke are a ton of fun . best tip for fluke is a white bucktail with a yellow gulp swimming mullet with a dropper loop about 6 inches to a foot with a teaser or just a hook and another gulp
im from Puerto Rico and I love watching your videos and blacktiph. Hope one day I can fish with you guys!!!
if you ever go back to PR, squid works like a charm down there! slowly reel in and you'll be catching them like crazy
i know its late but im currently in Puerto Rico and its nice to see familiar places.
Of a dock in Arecibo, Puerto Rico (hometown), there's a lot of 6+ ft Robalo (snook) right on the visible shore. You can only cast out of boats since the fish are used to eating food given my tourist. But they're huuuuugeee!
*by the tourist* my bad. Haha
Sounds awesome. Love snook.
Spanish Mackerels are also one of the richest sources for Omega-3 fatty acids. These are the polyunsaturated fatty acids with huge health benefits
the first fish was a cero mackerel and the "pretty fish" was a yellowtail snapper both taste very good. will also be there in april
Nice videos man I love your channel I like how you always have a positive attitude it makes for great and educational clips!
kyle arrison thanks for watching, I appreciate the support!
Great catches! That first fish looks like a Spanish Mackrel. Tight lines!!
I think that fish at 7:00 you caught was some sort of snapper I think a yellow snapper
first fish was a cero mackerel, blue runner, not sure what the other fish was, next was probably a snook that you lost or a barracuda, next was a yellow tail snappa, then a black margate, tomtate or sailors choice, then a pompano
first fish was a cero mackerel. Ive never seen one caught that close to the beach. Usually they are far out there! Nice fish
You should've bought a top water popper to use in the surf. they work really well on all kinds of fish.
William Brunjes I had one but unfortunately it didn't produce very well when i tried it
hey just a tip for next time
you will have a lot more luck if u fish in the late evening like 12 to 3 am or like 5 to 7 am just from past ocean experiences
By the look of the tail on your first fish, it looked like a mackerel. Good eating!
Where were you? I'm in PR right now and brought my poles. I went bass fishing today at Logo Cerrillos in Ponce... got skunked. The fish were jumping all around me. It was a beautiful area though.
*Lago Cerrillos
Did you fly down with your rod and reel or rent one there? I'm headed down in a few days and want to take mine.
+Zack Hughes I brought my bps extreme travel rod with me for this trip
+Zack Hughes don't need your equipment. As a fellow fishermen and puertorican a recommend Puerto Rico Tarpon Corp. Huge Tarpon out here. Also a have a friend that does deep sea fishing, but his charter boat is located on the southeast part of the island. Good Luck
You should have used the mackerel for bait. shark and other big fish love them when you cut big chunks out of them.
Off The Hook Angling damn i had no idea lol I'll def try that next time!
I've been with your channel since 10 sub's I hope you get 100k soon good luck
Creedence Plunkett Thanks for staying with me!
No problem
Your fish were:
Spanish Mackerel
Jack Crevally
Yellowtail Snapper
The little ones we call grunts or grunters, and the round little one was a pompano.
And a threadfin right after the jack
first fish was spanish mackeral. it was a cero mackeral.
no it was a cero mackeral and a juvenile permit not a jack
Hey mike love the videos and more wen you were hear in Puerto Rico , question you only fished in San Juan the capital did you go anewer ells in the islade ? sorry abaut the gramer
The fish at 6:53 is a yellow tail snapper I think
Love your videos. I have a question though. I have a pond that is almost completely full of moss and algae. What are some baits and lures I should use??
Prob a top water frog/popper/buzzbait. Really anything top water
Hunter Brown try topwater frogs and buzz toads. If those don't work try punching through with a punch rig
i see several identification attempts, but the first 1 was a cero mackerel ( great eating) the other yellow 1 was a yellowtail snapper (also great eating). also , do they call fiddler crabs spider crabs in Puerto Rico? spider crabs in Florida are a way different crab
Not a Spanish mackrel a few blue runners and the other one you said was pretty was a yellow tail snapper
cero mackeral *
That was a mackerel mike. How did u clean your reel after wards
The first fish u caught was a cero mackerel and the yellow one was a yellow tail snapper both are really good eating once they're bigger
LOVE the massive hook sets on the bait fish! I do the same thing with bluegill haha.
+California Sportsman lol as a bass fisherman, old habits die hard XD
First fish was a fish called a Peto. They can grow up to 5 feet in length. The juveniles stay close to the shore. (Im Puerto Rican).
no it wasn't. it was a cero mackeral
that was obviously not a peto. peto aren't even mackeral.
definitely not a peto (wahoo)
I'm 13 and live in Benton arkansas where do you recommend I go fishing near here
Monsterjam_ 15 sry I've never been there otherwise I'd help!
So for shark fishing, is there like a steel leader that you use or what? Sorry I don't know anything about sea or shark fishing
6:52 That was a yellowtail snapper
Love the video and all your videos
Keep up the good videos
Nice to see you fishing some where else and also other then just bass, videos are awesome keep it up hopefully more salt water fishing in the future god bless.
Manuel Cabrera more saltwater vids to come in the future!
Hey Michael im going to Puerto Vallarta in a coupke months and i wanted to know how you traveld with your rods and tackle whats should i take?
+Jr Juarez ok thanks what airline do you normally take there?
I know i already talked to you about spoons but have you ever caught some trout and bass with them?
Hank Henderson not yet but I plan to start bass fishing with em!
1Rod1ReelFishing the fish that fell off your line was a yellow tail snapper (really good eating)
Do you think the bps extreme travel rod is a good rod for trout I usually catch 18-20 inch trout.. You think it's good for that size?
blake martin IMO the medium heavy I had is too heavy for trout. You can check if they have a medium or medium light extreme rod though, that would work well
+1Rod1ReelFishing to even for 20 inch trout cus they pull hard
Hey mike, question, I'm going cat fishing for 2-60 lb catfish soon, and I'm using a baitcaster, what kind of line and poundage
haha that's quite a size range, if you used 50 lb mono or 80 lb braid you should be able to handle anything up to 60 lbs
+1Rod1ReelFishing thanks so much, I'll do that!
Ay mike Im going bass fishing what color lure should I use? BTW ive been asking other people and no responce so plz I have faith in you
+Ne0n_ Flare for clear water use greens and shahs colors( natural colors) for stain water use flashy or black blue
+Blake Boyle Thx man appreciate it 👍👍👍
the fish from 8:10 was my first fish that I caught in my live
Nice Spanish Mackerel. Blue fish was the second, the fifth was a Yellow Tail Jack, sixth was a pin fish, seventh was a Pompano, well done Michael and sister. You will have to tell me all about it.
Fromdabankfishing Will do! I'll prob be holding another sub tourney next month maybe you'll be free to join! Also, one of my subs caught a really nice bass from snell's today, looked to be around 5 lbs!
Blue runner was second
it was a cero mackeral not a spanish mackeral
the one yellow fish is a yellow tail snapper, great eating fish, i catch them all the time in the keys
hey man nice catch. you were fishing most of the time literally a block away from where I live. thx I didn't know there was good fishing there. ill defienently try it out these days. but be really careful that lagoon you fished in is a reserve. if they catch u fishing there they WILL arrest you. and you used some other protected species for bait. but next time your down here in pr let me know and ill take u out to some good spots!
They they give u hard time transporting your rods an tackel on the flight?
Usually if I fit my travel rod and tackle in a checked bag they don't give me any trouble
Mike what bass lure would you say is the best for bass fishing, like your number one go to lure?
How did you like that new Bass Pro Shops Extreme rod? Thinking of getting one for traveling
gunt189 It was great! I was very impressed with the sensitivity for a multi piece rod
1Rod1ReelFishing Thanks for the reply! I actually picked one up a few days ago for a trip. Loving it, I've caught 3 bass with it (which is good for a starter outer like me, haha).
i dont know if you know what the first fish you caught was a good medium sized mackerel
Hello. I like fishing but don't know where I can get strong line because I cannot cast far away as a I am a shore angler like you. Where could I get a line and rod like yours? Thanks.
Hockey Joe all the gear I used is listed in the video description and u can buy everything at bass pro shops, cabelas, or even dicks, good luck!
that first fish is a spanish mackeral it looks like. or it might be a cero mackeral, one of those two
How do you like the orra winch? I've been thinking about getting one for swim baits/ saltwater fishing
Brad Billeaudeau Performed great in the surf! I was bombing 80-100 yard casts with a 6'6" rod, an awesome value for the money!
hi !! great video im from pr and want to thank you for sharing. Question, regarding the white gulp berkley, what size did you use?? thanks
The fish you were using as bait are black drum and pompano. Those fish have to be a cirtin size to keep in the US at least
TrueThre Damn I'll have to do my research next time I live-line. Well if it counts for anything all those fish I live-lined were released alive since nothing ate em haha (minus the one I cut up :P)
where do you think is the best place to go bass fishing
hey man if you're ever in PR again I can take you to some good fishing spots. especially for monster snook.
I think maybe it was a snook or a red that broke you off idk if they live in Puerto rico but if they don't maybe a tarpon?
+SaltyFreshFishing def thinking it could've been a tarpon or snook or something!
I'm thinking about starting a fishing TH-cam channel any suggestions on necessary equipment for recording like a gopro or what type of computer and software to upload with
***** I use a gopro hero 4 silver, any gopro works, and I edit with gopro studio, any computer should be compatible, good luck!!
Thanks ! 👍
Yikes I just saw how much it costs going to see if I can find a go-pro alternative 😂😂 amazing channel btw
smallmouth500
first fish is a king fish or a small mackerel
You should try the lagoon with the cut bait and live bite but set Ur drag
I really enjoy this videos 👌🏻💪🏻
Im more of a fresh water guy myself. But every time i go on vaca to the ocean i only seam to catching things at dusk. Good video though. Youll have to try some dusk into night clips next time, thats when all the big ones come out to play
I'm going to Hawaii this summer and wanted to do some surf fishing.Any lure recommendations??
nice ... what types of lure do you use mike?
+Rhoodie George lures used are listed in the video description!
So is the fishing tourney still on for tmrrw rain or shine???
Ben Barber still on!!!
Do you remember what part of PR were you at??
+Jose Juan nah sry i don't :P
Some interesting fish there, I just got back from vacation too, did some surf and pier fishing. Got mostly blues with a few exceptions, I made a bluefish video and got bit, lol
TheFort Outdoors lol ouch, how badly were u injured?
Eh, 10 teeth marks in my finger, the video is on my channel if you wanna see, lol
The fish you called shad are moi or thread fin and in hawaii where i live their delicious
+RockinRoc Fishing my rod was a multi piece and I checked it in in my suitcase! you'll have to check in a rod tube for your one piece good luck!
+1Rod1ReelFishing thanks bud, you too!
