Interesting theory! I don't think it was necessarily successful, as guys like Harvey in real life don't think they are That nerdy, so I'm not sure many young male viewers identified with him. Add in top that, he was kind of a chauvinist jerk. However, this "Marcia can like a dorky guy" was repeated later with Charley and the Oh My Nose! Even though Marcia likely would put him in the friend zone, Charley was kind, genuine, and looked like an average young man, an image that many viewers could connect with.
When I started public school in 1969, there was a dress code that said boys had to wear button shirts or sweaters--not t-shirts--and sneakers were only for gym class. Those rules were gone a couple of years later.
It's so strange that Marcia would have a crush on a nerdy guy like Harvey Klinger! In the later episodes, her tastes in boys definitely improved. She started falling for the handsome, sexy, Keith Partridge types! 😍😍😍😍😍
