Nice! It’s similar to a Japanese Shakuhachi. The Shakuhachi uses a 30 degree blowing edge that requires making an embouchure with the lips, and blocking the bulk of the opening with the bottom lip/upper chin area. They’re traditionally made of a particular type of bamboo, but 3/4” schedule 40 pvc works good for a low cost alternative, and they’re simple to make. Thin walled schedule 20 pvc can be used too, but half a coupler needs to be glued on before cutting the blowing edge, so it will make the thin walled thicker so to be able to have a good blowing edge.
Enjoyed the video. Had my heart in my mouth much of the time due to the lack of a stable bench under the drilling and sawing...... nice result though 👍
OK, Tip One: when working with saws and power-tools like drills, DEFINITELY use a bench and not your knee to balance anything on. Use vice-clamps where- and whenever possible to secure the pipe you're carving. Tip Two: definitely wait for PVC glue to completely dry before putting your mouth and nose anywhere near it. Tip Three: files and sanding paper are your friends. So are Dremel tools.
This dude is pretty good at making and tuning these instruments out of PVC. I'm waiting for the day he makes a video where he gashes his leg with his saw or drill.
Hi. Very cool flutes you make. I tried the chromatic one, but it didnt work out so I'm starting with this one. Are the measurements for the holes from the bottom? I just drew them and somerhi g seems off. Your flute seems to have two sets of four holes each separated by roughly an inch but with about 2 inches between he sets. The numbers on the table in the video create 3 holes approx an inch apart, then the 2 inch gap followed by 5 holes that are approx an inch apart. Am I doing something wrong? Let me know--I just got it to a perfect G and I'm itching to start on the holes!
About 17 inches, keep in mind there will be a little extra to cut off to make the mouthpiece angled just right and the air channel short. Some stores sell pipes in 2-foot lengths, those are usually only a few bucks for a pipe like this. But you shouldn't try to get the length exactly the same as mine, what you should do is make a fipple in a longer piece of pipe and cut it down to the right length to tune it to a perfect G, because every fipple's intonation is different.
johnbtheperson thank you! I'm making one of these for physics and I'd like it to be as precise as possible for a good grade and I play a regular flute as well so this should be a breeze
What do you mean by the upper two? If you have annotations disabled, you may not have noticed, but I made a mistake in measuring the holes and I corrected it in the description if that is what is causing the problem.

Thanks for sharing this. It's quite amazing what you can create from a simple piece of PVC tube! ❤️🙏

I know, I watched to the end just from the suspense of wondering when it'd get gory!
I tried to do it as you did, now i have all these tiny holes in my kneecap and gashes across my thumb. Am I doing something wrong??

E5 should be 7 and 13/16 instead of 8 and 13/16. Sorry about that, and thanks for letting me know.

Lordy!Lordy! this guy is a health & safety nightmare. I'm glad he still functions normally!
How long does the pvc pipe have to be?

can I ask why on the top four holes the upper two are farther than the lower two? I just marked where the holes should be just about
and it doesn't look right
