    I found your channel trying to help my best friend and her mom, her mom got an ostomy after colon cancer, the doctors over thought how much radiation was needed to kill the cancer, and ended up killing the cancer but also frying her colon. Your tips ended up helping her through a lot of bad times and you made her smile when thing got bad. I wanted to say thank you for helping my best friend and her mom get their lives back on track. Thank You!!!!

    You are truly inspirational. Your attitude and personality are beautiful.I came across your videos a year or so ago while looking up some medical issues exhibited by my nephew(Eli who is now 3 yrs old). He has Down Syndrome & as a result, he has exhibited gastrointestinal issues from day 1. He doesn't have a colonoscopy bag, but he has a lot of similar experience as you have. There have been days when Eli went through extremely uncomfortable situations and i felt helpless to help him. Your videos remind me to keep my head up and to laugh about those uncomfortable or awkward moments. Thank you! You and your optimism really are a blessing to the world. ❤

    I've also had countless leaks in bed, waking up to see the bag had overfilled and pushed out the side of the flange. Some others are when I was at a bush party and went up to the house to empty it cuz it was super full I tripped over a curb, the bag fell off and "it" went everywhere. At a friend's house we were watching a movie and it was really full, i touched the bag to check it and realized it detached from the flange, i got up to go to the bathroom and it fell off all over the floor. Another time is when I was working at a food bank, again it was super full and i knew i should empty it but it was a busy day and it leaked out the side of the flange, a lot. After the client i was dealing with left (thankfully no one noticed) i told the guy i was working with what was happening and walked home, through downtown, clutching my abdomen to cover the mess that was seeping out all over my shirt and pants and like you had a fully clothed shower ASAP. Many other times are just when the pouch got too heavy and pulled the already leaking flange off when I was about to change or empty it making a mess of my bathroom floor and walls. Key info to take away here people, DO NOT WAIT TOO LO G TO EMPTY THE POUCH!
    Thanks for making these videos, I'm the only ostomate I know so it's good to be able to relate to people on this matter.

    Dear Maggie, it's so brave to tell this embarrasing moments here on youtube. I had ileostomy surgery in 1982 and in all this years i had also nearly accidents with people around me but i was - until now - a Lucky person, considering your stories with your boyfriend and your other creepy situations. It never happens (cross my fingers) until now with other people in my surroundings. I'm a single person and accidents happens during the night and during the day but i'm always prepared for this kind of situations. Once it happened on street and I went straight line at home thinking that I will never meet this passing people again in my life (it was in another country during holidays, so)... In time i was a college teacher and suddenly (standing alone in the teacher room something dropped on my shoes). It seems I forgot to use that clip that day 😶... Imagine it happened in front of my students... nut In learned that the human Spirit is always finding a solution. The human mind is something extraordinary and you proofed this by overcoming and coming with this super embarrasing moments. Well done, Maggie.

    Maggie, I'm glad you made this video, it's excellent. We all have our ostomy leakage disasters and it can be very upsetting and cause a lot of anxiety. Making this humorous and laughing at it helps makes it easier to cope with and knowing there are many of us out there who share the same problems. With my ileal conduit urostomy, I have had too many leakages. I have a great boss at my job, and whenever I had a leakage at work, I would call him and tell him , I have a plumbing problem, and he would tell me , no problem, I would go home, clean up, change the wafer, and pouch, pants, and come back to work. I'm lucky I live close to work. Another good one was , while driving my truck, I always to check my pouch to see if it's leaking or how full it is, I noticed the pouch was missing, I freaked out a little, and driving with one hand I found the pouch down my pants leg, I fiddled with it and finally got it back on the wafer. It snaps on like Tupperware lid. Minimal leakage. One other funny one was my cat jumped on my lap and by accident, his claws punctured the bag and I was soaked. I learned to avoid sharp objects. LOL. And of course there's the unfortunate accidents in bed, I have a night drainage bag on the side of my bed which connects to the pouch with a vinyl hose, sometimes, I would turn over in my sleep causing the tube to come loose and I would wake up soaked, thank God I have several hospital pads to protect the mattress and sheets.

    Maggie, I have had my ostomy for 4 months now and only had 3 leakage episodes, all while sleeping. Luckily all were not messes, just caught them as they started. But something I have to tell everyone is that my 19 yo son while we are in the living room watching tv... and my ostomy gurgles or makes a sound... my son will miserably cry out... "Daaaad is poopin on the couch!!"..... "NNNoooooooooo" it's hysterical.

    I'd love to hear more about how you navigate embarrassing sounds during patient care and classes. I too have an ileostomy that I acquired about 7 years ago, and I'm almost finished with my bachelor of art in social work. In class and at my internship, I tend to keep my fingers gently pressed on the stoma at all times whenever possible, but it's a constant distraction. It also causes me to lose the seal quicker. Emptying my bag at my internship site is also embarrassing because the building is so small and Hollister's deodorant just doesn't neutralize the odor enough.

    Been there, just last weekend as it happens. thank god it was in the house, I was being lazy and waited too long to empty, the clip got caught in my bunched up pyjama bottoms and let loose when I stood up. That Oh.My.God moment where you're frozen in place for a split second when it happens lol

    the only time I was embarrassed by my ostomy is some time last week. I was in the shower and my sister was helping me with my hair and the bag popped open and she had just turned off the water. after that we had to close the bag and wash me off over again

    I heard that 2-piece systems enable more devastating leaks than one piece. Do you have any experience there? Since I concluded years ago... never use a 2-piece. The only horror I experienced was when my drainable bag's clip got caught on my panties when pulling them down to use the bathroom in a Target and opened the end of the pouch. Yeah... no need to have a vivid imagination there. You know what happened, what I looked (and must have smelled) like. Ugh. I had nothing to change into, and only a Target shopping bag with non-clothing items in it to shield the horrendous view from people as I ~whooshed~ out to my car. Someone MUST have seen it. I wanted to die!
    Almost worse? When I got to my car, I started it up and immediately got a knock on the window. It was a cop! This cop said that someone saw me "key" key their car. I immediately knew who it was because myself and this d-head driver were aiming for the same parking spot and he got it. When he got out of the car, he gave me the filthiest look. I parked elsewhere and went in. I don't know what he had against me that would make him try to frame me, unless it was just that he was a nasty dude, but I told the cop, "Let's go watch the store's video RIGHT NOW. I can prove I came nowhere near that car!" He didn't want to go watch the video for some reason and obviously believed my story, but it sure irked me, particularly when I had a serious leak to deal with! (And told him.) And something that WAS way worse was the fact that at that very moment, my mom was dying of cancer. I'd been on one of my visits with her in Indiana when this all happened. It was a bad, bad week. :(

    they really need to improve ostomy tech, it shouldn't be the case that it leaks so frequently. Maybe wearing a coverlet strip at all times, would help prevent accidental unclippings

    Here is an embarrassing but funny moment I can laugh about. I lost the plastic clip on my ostomy bag. I just put it on and I was lucky it was empty. My friend saw what happened and produced a metal clip from her purse. It was large and certainly not made for that purpose. It worked though. We were in a fast food restaurant. I went to get some drinks. Suddenly as as I passed a table I heard a loud "clank." The metal clip had attached itself to a metal chair occupied by a pretty young woman. As I finally freed it, the startled young woman said, "what just happened?" I sheepishly said, "sorry." It turns out that metal clip was a fairly strong magnet.

    I have you beat by a mile! I had my ostomy done and my mother was in the same hospital with pneumonia. She was 90 years and she died. This happened 5 days after my surgery. They unhooked me to go to the funeral home in a wheelchair, of course. They rolled me up to view the body, then to the pew. When I stood up to go from wheelchair to my place on the pew my bag broke! Imagine...then having to go in the limo to go to the cemetary. Stinky!!! All I could do was hold my dress so poo wouldn't fall out so didn't go to the burial site. I have never been so embarrassed!

    Once my father vomited all over the bathroom (curtains, mirror, toilet, walls...) after eating some bad lobster. It was the in the middle of the night so he went back to sleep. The next morning, I was in a rush to attend a wedding, so I ended up taking a shower and brushing my teeth in that filth...... God it was so bad....
    Another time, when I was just eight years old, I had gymnastics with the kids. We had to climb an obstacle course. At the height of this wooden rack, where everyone could see you, the instructor would yell stop and we had to suddenly stop. Well, when she did that, I lost bladder control and I peed all over the plastic mats below...you could hear the "drip drip drip" in the silence of the gymnasium as everyone stared straight at me. The whole class was laughing, and I was the laughing stock for years to come.
    Another time, I was about 14 years old and at a meeting at church. I had a strong urge to pee and when I went to the washroom, I had a wardrobe malfunction and the zipper of my jeans couldn't unzip fast enough!!! Yep....guess what happened...I don't how but an auntie nearby found a pair of spare pants somewhere in the church...I couldn't care less if someone else had worn it before.
    But that still pales in comparison to what you went through Mags. :O Good God...Thanks for sharing! ^_^

    I have Crohns but I don't have an ostomy. I might be over looking an obvious answer here, but is there any reason why there isn't a disposable system where you just change the bag every couple/few hrs?

    • @chantelthorn892
      @chantelthorn892 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      andie361 Thompson there is, it’s just not very popular because it takes a lot of work to change your bag, too much to do it multiple times a day.

    • @celeste2045
      @celeste2045 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      andie361 Thompson There are 2 piece disposable bag systems made by Convatec and Hollister. She mentions that she uses the Hollister type for sanitary reasons. Many insurances won't pay for them, and they are EXPENSIVE out of pocket. I have a box of Hollister disposable bags that cost $220. I personally use Convatec and don't remember how much they cost. I only use them if I'm going somewhere like a campground. I'd love to be able to use them all the time, but they're too expensive.
