      You just need tank mates that are well matched in aggression, they make great dithers for small cichlids

    I will never get cichlids again. I can't deal with the aggression. Thank you for letting us enjoy yours.I would love to get a large Platy tank. My 2 tanks are occupied with fantail goldfish so it will be a while.They usually live a very long time.

    Neon tetras I won't try again. The color is interesting but I find them kind of boring. Also for some reason I have a hard time keeping them alive. For my small tank, I'd just prefer to have a couple of guppies or platys, I don't necessarily have a dream fish, but I would like to try a 15-30 gallon saltwater tank in the near future.

    A little tip I picked up on TH-cam. If you want black sand use blasting sand got mine at tractor supply. Cost $11 for 50 pounds. Was unsure in the beginning . 3 years ago used in my 75 gallon cichlid tank. NO PROBLEMS. Great for Geo’s. Saved me a bundle of money!!

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’ve heard blasting sand could be abrasive and irritate sand sifting fish like Geo’s and ACs. But you’re saying it worked well with no issues. Maybe the abrasive issue was a rumor started by aquarium sand selling companies🤣🤣🤣👍🏻

    • @Bensonhurstbabyboomer
      @Bensonhurstbabyboomer 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BenOchart That is a good point I really didn’t consider that I was more worried that it was a commercial product and it would leech some kind of chemical in water. It had worked fine. Bought 3 or 4 bags to get a deep sand bed to see if I could get some anaerobic bacteria in bed to break down nitrates has not happened. I have looked for the gravel you have Lapis lustre around where I live no luck I like it a lot. You may be right the companies spread the rumors that something dose not work so you don’t try it. Just like when cable first came the companies spread rumors that because you were paying for cable there would not be commercials. How did that work out. Pleasure to speak with you. Be well!

    1. What fish will you NEVER buy again (If you can, please include why)
    Small/nano fish as a whole. I find zero interest or joy in keeping them. I keep trying every couple of years because I keep thinking I'm somehow missing out on keeping them, but each time I do, it never gets my attention. It's a waste of tank space for me.
    2. What fish are you absolutely going to buy if you can ever find one.
    The Starry Night Cichlid (Paratilapia polleni)

    I just upped the number of kuhli loaches to about 15 in my 40 gallon, and they're just staring to come out more. There was a killer deal at petco and I had to buy them out of black kuhlis, I just went for more driftwood haha. The black variety seem to be more bold than the banded, love them both tho

    Otocinlcus Catfish. Sad story too. My micro-community cube was having serious algae issues about 2 months in. At first my plants wouldn't grow, added bigger lights and started dosing easy-green. Win, win. Brown algae began covering plant leaves and choking out Anubias, Swords, and stem plants. So I picked up 4 Otos. One looked very sickly in the bag and I asked the employee to change it out for a different one, she refused and lectured me about how wild caught fish can sometimes be a little delicate, but they will recover fine "if my water was good and tank was not dirty" I should have walked out the store immediately and left those poor fish. Sick fish was very dark with dilated pupils and apparent fin rot, which I attributed to them being kept in a tank with some aggressive archerfish at the store. Poor sick fish was dead in the morning. The other 3 appeared ok though and got to work eating all the algae, however on morning 3 another was dead and I noticed Ich spots on the remaining 2 Otos. Also had a bit of Ich on 2 Rasboras. Turned my temp up to 87.5F as many have advised. This stopped the Ich and the Otos seemed to be feeling better. After a few days the Ich came back so temp back up and I prepared to use Ich-X. The meds killed the Ich, however the remaining 2 Otos started acting sickly again, and got very bloated, they both died in the next two days of what I believe was some kind of intestinal parasite as white discharge was coming from their behinds. The Otos lasted 11 days only, but after they died my Rasboras all began to get mouth fungus and the same white gooey discharge from their vents and some developed larger cyst like spots (not Ich) on their bodies. Currently 2 Rasboras have died and I have no clue how to combat this new disease/parasite. Don't buy fish you aren't sure about and ALWAYS QUARATINE.

    Thanks for getting to my question Ben! Ya I had my silver dollar in with young clown loach and a group of community fish, tetra and molly mostly. Struggled feeding them because they were so timid, I then swapped out the community for Zebra Obliquidens and my loaches were ok until the silver dollar were dart back and forth causing all 6 of my clowns to ick up and die. Sorry for the story your set up is much better. But absolutely worth every penny the albino threadfin geophagus are! I love how the fins grow out with that burst of bright colour, love it and thank you for everything!

    Love the clown loaches, I keep adding a dozen per year but I never see them other than feeding time for 15 minutes ,they look great in large group never being able to keep a clear count of how many I have in the outdoor pond.(should be 60 or so,from 2 1/2" to 6") they swim so fast that I don't know if they swim around and back before I know if they're the same school. They stay in groups of 8 to 12 mostly, the most was around 40 or so?

    Cardinals. Lovely to look at but delicate, prone to ich, and don't like hard water, even if captive bred. Bought 10 a year ago. Lost 3 quickly, one 6 months later and now left with 6. Also otocinclus, If you don't have soft water, you will have high mortality.

    1.
    Common pleco, messy
    Green Tiger Loach Syncrossus hymenophysa or berdmorei. Went in to get flying foxes, didn't check bag and ended up with these and decided to give them a try. Never saw them and other fish disappeared including one of them.
    Buenos Aires Tetra, aggression. Killed a bunch of cardinal tetras.
    Swordtails, mine have always gotten sick, mass die offs. Never had illness issues with any other fish.
    I don't like anything bigger than 6" or so.
    2. I don't know. I've been finding everything locally that I've been looking for.

    I had my share of killers fishes. Someone gave me their killer fishes. I took me about a year to find someone who took them off my hand. Meanwhile I lost lots of beautiful fish to these killers. Tiger Barbs were the worst ones. The Red Tail Shark grew quickly and started killing my fish. A Common Pleco grew to 14” in my tank. It only came of at night and many fish disappeared during the night. Years ago I had a rather big Neon Tetra who was bully in my tank. It kept all my fish in line. It would kill any fish that went out of line. The strange thing is that this Neon Tetra was oddly big. It reached 2” long. This tank was strictly a Neon Tetra tank. Some of those Neon Tetra lived well over 15 years old. I moved to Arizona, so I sold the whole tank with those Neons in it. I missed that tank. For some reason that big Neon died. I was so happy about that. It was with me for 5 years. I always thought this Neon Tetra was a wild caught Neon.

    Easier for me to just list my top bulletproof fish: 1) black neon tetras 2) brilliant green rasboras 3) rice fish 4) African jewel cichlids and finally 5) Nile puffers (housed alone only). These fish live a long time and withstand all water conditions. Chinese algae eaters are ruthless, don’t eat algae, attack fish but they cannot die 😂.

    1. I will never attempt a betta sorority tank again. They look fantastic and tried one once, but certain colored females are more aggressive. Very tricky setup.
    2, I adore ALL rainbowfish and would pick up Pseudomugil gertrudae on the spot! Peaceful fish, great for planted tanks, and SO MUCH COLOR!

    • @TheFantasyBookWriter
      @TheFantasyBookWriter 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So far I've found that the blue and purple female betta are aggressive indeed. They are in solo tanks until i drop them off for adoption at petco. I had five that did fine and when I added those two colors I ended up with one of the original sorority and the rest were dead within two days. I watched the tank a little longer than usual and saw the blue female chasing amd attacking the male betta and he ran from her! The purple one was attacking my cory habrosis so yeah I just have the male and 2 original females in the tank and they're fine. I'm just gonna leave it at that. They're two white and one black btw.

    Absolutely would buy: I'm going to cheat because it's an amphibian and not a fish, but a long time ago before I knew what aquarium keeping was about, I walked out of an aquarium shop with a "rubber eel." Looked cool, so I bought it, but I killed it almost instantly because I had no idea what I was doing and there was no internet at the time to inform/lecture me about it. I like all the African Cichlids. About as close to brilliant colors and patterns as saltwater you can get with freshwater fish. What I have found with them is stocking heavy works best. If you try to keep 10-15 regardless of tank size more often than not there will be 1 or even a few that become overly aggressive. And of course there are always exceptions to that rule that can go both ways. I really like all the South Americans they are like puppy dogs. Dempsey's and Texas Cichlids are some of my favorites followed closely with Oscars. The one I wouldn't own again is a Flower Horn... The only one I've had to house alone 😢 And the only reason being I don't like dedicating such a large tank for just a single fish. For me the key to keeping any Cichlids is to have several back up tanks online to deal with personality disorders 😂😂😂. Sometimes you just gotta move them around till they groove as well as introducing them at the same time vs established groups. Right or wrong this is what worked for me. Many years ago I had a 2 car garage that was converted and enclosed with heat and air that was all Cichlids. I can't rember exactly how many tanks there was somewhere between 10-12 with fish at all times and 3-5 back-ups\ hospital \ quarantine tanks but only 1 125 gallon tank was Africans so I guess I'm partial to the South American's and Texas Cichlids 😎 But I wouldn't be opposed to doing another large African tank in my bedroom to watch at night. I'm wanting to get back into the hobby and I'm really liking the nanos and invertebrates. Way cheaper to have several species and tanks 😂

    No more bettas! First, he killed my new pygmy cory's - believing I must have acclimatised them wrong. By the second day, I saw him finish off the last one by head butting it. So then I tried two lots of snails. Small ones at first - assuming the same acclimating issue, as they came by mail. Died overnight. Then I got 2 big ones from a local supplier, thinking he might have cracked the smaller ones' shells. They lasted a day longer. I read afterwards, bettas have sharp teeth and can bight off snail antennae and eyes. My tank got so dirty because I couldn't keep a clean up crew alive with him!

    my never buy list would be gold fish , common pleco's , south american ciclids Oscar's in particular .......... surprisingly i have a tank with 1 oscar and 1 commet goldfish .. and they have been living together in that tank for nearly 5 months now. gold fish was added with 4 others as live food but guess he was to big to eat and has gone on to out pace the oscar in growth and is now 2/3's the size of the oscar. over all both are very dirty fish and req lots of mantinance , its prob easyer to have the oscar in a bare tank because they will redecorate the tank for you nearly every night.

    Im sticking to peaceful communities. I had South americans as a youth, but now, I like the mixing of species. But never mollies. I bought 3 females pretty small baloons. Eventually, one female killed the other two. But i didn't realize it was her. I thought they just died. It was a newly cycled tank. But after buying 2 more, she did them in also. She also bullies a female crown tail betta and goes head to head with my bigger female bolivian Ram when food is around.

    Hi Ben,
    What is the "oldest" fish you have kept in your aquariums?
    Many chiclids can live upto 10 years. Thats quite sometime.
    Do you have any that made it to 3,5 or 7+ years if age?

      Back in California I had some old ones. Not sure exactly how old, but pretty old. My tanks in Nashville have been set up for around 3 years, and some of the fish were from the beginning, like the red shoulder and red spotted severums, and several of the Aftrican Cichlids.

      @@BenOchart that's cool, I know keeping African cichlids alive that long isn't always easy. Congrats.
      I just tossed 3 dozen juvenile mbunas into a large tank & they are teaching teenager years & lost 2 already.
      All that's left when I find them is a fish skeleton. Like they are little piranhas inside my tank lmao 🤣😅

    I hear these horror stories about peacocks and haps but I hear they need to be overstocked to help tge aggression. I would like to try to have african cyclids if I can make it work.

    Never get a fancy goldfish again…the are not hardy and usually get swim bladder issues
    and die..😢 Might be risky…but would love several chocolate gouramis…🫶
